Martin Le-May caught the moment when the woodpecker took flight with a weasel on its back

Amateur photographer Martin Le-May, from Essex, has recorded the extraordinary image of a weasel riding on the back of a green woodpecker as it flies through the air.

The photograph was taken at Hornchurch Country Park in east London on Monday afternoon.
Speaking to BBC News, Mr Le-May said he had managed to capture the moment while he was out walking with his wife Ann.
He said: "I heard a distressed squawking noise and feared the worst.
"I soon realised it was a woodpecker with some kind of small mammal on its back.
"I think we may have distracted the weasel as when the woodpecker landed it managed to escape and the weasel ran into the grass."
Mr Le-May said he was astounded by the reaction to the picture on social media.
The wildlife shot has been retweeted several thousand times.

'Ferocious as a lion' Wildlife expert Lucy Cooke told the BBC News Channel: "This is a truly extraordinary image.
"The green woodpecker is a ground-feeding bird, but weasels normally attack rabbits. The woodpecker is not its usual prey.
"But weasels are fearless.
"A female weasel weighs less than a Mars Bar but is as ferocious as a lion, so this is why the woodpecker would have been able to take off with it on its back."

Wildlife presenter Steve Backshall says he has no reason to doubt the photo is real

Wildlife presenter Steve Backshall agrees that while highly unusual it is not totally unheard of and has "no reason to doubt" the photo.
He compared the woodpecker to other animals like leaf cutter ants and rhino beetles, which can carry 850 times their body weight.
He said: "The weasel is pretty fascinating as well. It can kill things much bigger than itself, so it's an impressive little creature when you think about its size."

Jerrod Ebert and Kevin Schultz were sitting in their parked car earlier this year when they noticed something peculiar — an elderly man walking through a snow-covered park to reach a bench.
At first, the Wisconsin city workers were mystified.

“For most people, it’s a path to nowhere,” Ebert told the CBS Evening News. “It’s a path to somewhere for one person.”  The two workers quickly realized what was going on. The bench was a memorial to the man’s wife who had died a couple years ago.

“It took us both back a little bit thinking, my gosh, his devotion is that strong that he still comes when he can’t make it to the bench even,” Ebert told the CBS Evening News.  The two knew they had to help and decided to shovel the walkway to the bench. They’ve now been doing so for the past two months.  When Bud Caldwell went to pay respects to his wife, he was initially astonished.  “One day I pulled up there and there’s the walk shoveled,” explained Caldwell. “My knees about buckled on me.”  Caldwell told the CBS Evening News his wife loved the song “Daisy a Day.” So, in her memory, he got a bench dedicated to her and takes daisies each day to visit and sing to her.  But Caldwell never expected someone to go so far out of their way to help him.  “We were just doing what we felt was our job,” Ebert said. “Some intuition, be it divine or otherwise says this is why you’re here — to help one another."

Here’s How Much Taxpayer Money Illegals Will Receive Via Obama’s Amnesty

President Barack Obama’s November amnesty will give $1.7 billion in taxpayers’ cash to illegal immigrants, according to a congressional study.


The news emerged two days after top Republican leaders overcame GOP opposition to a 2015 budget bill that allows Obama to fund his unpopular amnesty for roughly 5 million illegals.


“The program could cost taxpayers $1.7 billion over 10 years, almost all of it in the first five years,” according to a report by the McClatchy Washington Bureau. The rebates are allowed by the IRS’ interpretation of existing laws governing the Earned Income Tax Credit program, which was designed to subsidize low-wage employment in the United States.


The Joint Committee on Taxation compiled the estimate, which was obtained by McClatchy.
“Those who were working illegally in the United States shouldn’t be rewarded for doing so,” said a statement to McClatchy from Republican Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley, who is pushing a bill that would bar tax payments to illegals.


My proposal would prohibit those granted deferred action from claiming the EITC [payments] for any year they were working without authorization in the United States,” Grassley said.


There’s little evidence that Democrats will end their prior support for sending taxpayers’ money to illegal immigrants.


The new cost estimate comes too late for the amnesty debate, which temporarily ended Tuesday when House Speaker John Boehner joined with Democrats to overcome the anti-amnesty vote by 167 Republican legislators.


Earlier, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and 15 other GOP senators had voted with all 46 Democratic senators to reject the anti-amnesty language in the 2015 budget for the Department of Homeland Security.

The leaders’ move was bitterly criticized by GOP base voters. Prior polls showed that roughly 85 percent of GOP voters oppose Obama’s amnesty.


During the three-month dispute over the amnesty funding, GOP leaders did not use arguments on the impact of the amnesty on everyday American to rally public pressure on Democratic politicians. Instead of citing the tax rebates, for example, they simply argued that Obama’s amnesty violated legal and constitutional rules.


A Texas judge temporarily blocked the amnesty in mid-February.


The lawsuit is being appealed by Obama’s deputies, who may also try to find new ways to relaunch the unpopular amnesty.


The Congressional Budget Office says the $1.7 billion payment to illegals will be offset by $20 billion in new taxes from legalized illegals.


However, that $20 billion in new taxes would be paid anyway if unemployed Americans were offered the jobs.


Also, a wide variety of other costly government aid programs — and the migrants’ relatively low level of productivity — could push the cost of Obama’s unilateral amnesty above $2 trillion during the net five decades,  according to data published by the Heritage Foundation.

One of the many reasons constitutional conservatives consider President Obama a threat to the Constitution is his disdain for the separation of powers, illustrated most recently in his plan to bypass the Senate in making an arms deal with Iran.


The Framers understood that throughout history, the real threat to God-given liberty had been centralized, unchecked governmental power. As such, they crafted our system in a way to limit the consolidation of that power, especially in the federal government.


They did this in a number of ways, including establishing a system of federalism, which divided powers between the federal and state governments. They also specifically enumerated powers granted to the federal Congress and added the Bill of Rights, which expressly restricted Congress’ encroachment on a panoply of individual liberties and also included the Ninth and 10th Amendments, which reserve powers to the states and the people.


As to the power granted to the federal government, the Framers took further steps to deter its centralization by distributing the functions of government into three coequal branches, the legislative, executive and judicial – known as the separation of powers. They also provided for an intricate scheme of checks and balances among the three branches to guard against expansions of their power.


Throughout his tenure in office, Obama has been exercising powers outside the scope of his constitutionally prescribed executive authority. Democrats have cynically denied his usurpations, saying that he’s just doing what other presidents have done, but his abuses have been different in kind.
He has abused his power with premeditation, announcing early on, through his former chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, that he would govern through “executive orders and directives to get the job done across a front of issues.” More recently, he has boasted that he has a pen and a phone – tools that will enable him to circumvent legislative authority.


He not only granted virtual amnesty to millions in contravention of Congress’ authority but also created new, substantive rights for the immigrants, from Social Security numbers to driver’s licenses. These rights could have far-reaching and material consequences, such as giving tax credits to millions who have lived here illegally. If that doesn’t outrage you, you don’t have a pulse, or you think the Constitution should have no greater weight than the sheets of paper it can be printed on.


In implementing Obamacare, he granted exemptions and suspended deadlines at his sole whim and even granted federal subsidies to people in states that had not set up an exchange, in direct violation of the law, as his advisers have admitted.


People have probably forgotten by now Obama’s radical czars, whom he appointed to serve with all the power of Cabinet officers but without being confirmed by the Senate. Then there was Obama’s planned defiance of the Senate in moving Guantanamo Bay detainees to U.S. soil – in Illinois – despite the Senate’s having voted 90-6 against such a move. Also, don’t forget his unilateral reversal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gay service members, his Environmental Protection Agency’s regulatory end run around Congress to regulate carbon because Congress had refused to pass a cap-and-trade bill, his lawless subordination of secured creditors in favor of his union allies in the Chrysler restructuring scandal, and his defiance of a federal judge’s order invalidating his imperious ban on deep-water drilling. There are many more examples.


Most recently, and quite disturbingly, Obama has signaled his intention to consummate a nuclear arms deal with Iran without so much as conferring with the Senate – much less getting its approval, as required by the Constitution’s treaty clause in Article II, Section 2.


When asked about this, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said, “Ultimately, we can’t put in place an additional hurdle for that agreement to overcome here at the eleventh hour.”
So now the Constitution is merely “an additional hurdle” to these dangerous people? This should alarm everyone in this nation – not just Republicans, not just conservatives.


Obama will argue that he is allowed to do this because presidents have traditionally entered into agreements with other countries without the advice and consent of the Senate, known as “executive agreements.” But he knows – there is zero chance he doesn’t know – that executive agreements have never been used for something so monumentally important as establishing an (as opposed to terminating an existing) arms treaty with another nation – nuclear arms, no less.


Obama full well understands – constitutional scholar that he claims to be – that executive agreements are used to cover matters solely within his executive power or those made pursuant to a treaty or an act of Congress.


The Framers were so adamant about presidents obtaining approval in important matters that they imposed a requirement of a supermajority of the Senate for ratification of treaties.


An arms deal with Iran could result in this militant theocracy’s acquisition of nuclear weapons, which would be a dire threat to our national security and that of our allies, especially Israel. No one could pass a polygraph claiming that a matter of such grave importance should simply be written off as minor enough to be handled by executive agreement.


If Obama successfully formalizes such a deal, will there by anything left of this Constitution we all claim to so revere?


If your answer is that “it prevents him from raising taxes,” you may want to think again. Word is that his IRS is preparing to raise taxes on corporations; they call it “closing loopholes.” Please be bold, Congress.

Ferguson: Eric Holder Threatens To Disband Police Department Over Alleged Racism.................

The Ferguson report and its claims of racism inside the department have prompted Eric Holder to threaten to disband the force. During a press conference, the attorney general said the Justice Department was prepared to do “what is necessary” to “fix” the Missouri police department where Darren Wilson used to work.

Eric Holder’s Ferguson report maintains that the police department used excessive force on a regular basis and noted that 93 percent of arrests were of black people. According to the most recent census date, the St. Louis suburb where Michael Brown was shot after a strong-arm robbery and confrontation with Darren Wilson is 67.4 percent African American. A total of 31.5 percent of the homes, which included children in Ferguson, were female head of households with no male present. Households with children in the city comprise 39.1 percent of the population. In Ferguson, 24.9 percent of the population is living below the poverty level.
President Barack Obama deemed the Ferguson police department “broken and racially biased” and in need of a “fix” by the federal government. When speaking to reporters in front of Air Force One during a stop in Maryland, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said that his agency was willing to do “everything from working with them to coming up with an entirely new structure,” in reference to what the Justice Department has planned for the Ferguson Police Department.
When asked if “everything” within his power included completely dismantling and disbanding the local police force in the state of Missouri, Eric Holder said, “‘If that’s what’s necessary, we’re prepared to do that.”
The comment sent shockwaves through police departments across American and ignited a states rights debate. If the federal government is willing to eradicate a police force in one city because of claims or racial bias and a perception of abusive of power when collecting fines and issuing tickets, could such actions become a trend and lead to the creation of a nationalized police force?
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder also had this to say about the Ferguson report and plans for the department.

“The notion that you would use a law enforcement agency or law enforcement generally to generate revenue, and then the callous way in which that was done and the impact that it had on the lives of the ordinary citizens of that municipality, was just appalling. Appalling. And that is not something that we’re going to tolerate.”
