Gold-Plated Nano-particles Seek and Destroy Cancer Cells

In a recently published study, researchers from Cornell University detail how they developed gold-plated nano-particles that are able to find and destroy cancer cells.


Comparable to nano-scale Navy Seals, Cornell scientists have merged tiny gold and iron oxide particles to work as a team, then added antibody guides to steer the team through the bloodstream toward colorectal cancer cells. And in a nanosecond, the alloyed allies then kill the bad guys – cancer cells – with absorbed infrared heat.
This scenario is not science fiction – welcome to a medical reality.
“It’s a simple concept. It’s colloidal chemistry. By themselves, gold and iron-oxide alloys are benign and inert, and the infrared light is low-power heating,” said Carl Batt, Cornell’s Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor of Food Science and the senior author on the paper. “But put these inert alloys together, attach an antibody to guide it to the right target, zap it with infrared light and the cancer cells die. The cells only need to be heated up a few degrees to die.”
Batt and his colleagues – Dickson K. Kirui, Ph.D. ’11, a postdoctoral fellow at Houston Methodist Research Institute and the paper’s first author; Ildar Khalidov, radiology, Weill Cornell Medical College; and Yi Wang, biomedical engineering, Cornell.
For cancer therapy, current hyperthermic techniques – applying heat to the whole body – heat up cancer cells and healthy tissue, alike. Thus, healthy tissue tends to get damaged. This study shows that by using gold nano-particles, which amplify the low energy heat source efficiently, cancer cells can be targeted better and heat damage to healthy tissues can be mitigated. By adding the magnetic iron oxide particles to the gold, doctors watching MRI and CT scanners can follow along the trail of this nano-sized crew to its target.
When a near-infrared laser is used, the light penetrates deep into the tissue, heating the nano-particle to about 120 degrees Fahrenheit – an ample temperature to kill many targeted cancer cells. This results in a threefold increase in killing cancer cells and a substantial tumor reduction within 30 days, according to Kirui. “It’s not a complete reduction in the tumor, but doctors can employ other aggressive strategies with success. It also reduces the dosage of highly toxic chemicals and radiation – leading to a better quality of life,” he explained.
The study was funded in part by the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, and Kirui was supported by a Sloan Foundation Graduate Fellowship.

WASHINGTON – Over 300 prominent  Republicans have signed a brief submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court calling for the legalization of same-sex “marriage” nationwide. The amicus brief, or friend of the court brief, was led by former Republican National Committee (RNC) chairman Ken Mehlman, who also served as manager of George W. Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign.

“One of the points that I hope people appreciate when they read the brief is that supporting marriage equality is, in fact, the conservative position,” Mehlman told the Boston Globe


The brief argues that the 14th Amendment requires equal protection, which means that homosexuals should be permitted then to marry each other. “Although amici hold a broad spectrum of socially and politically conservative, moderate, and libertarian views, amici share the view that laws that bar same-sex couples from the institution of civil marriage, with all its attendant profoundly important rights and responsibilities, are inconsistent with the United States Constitution’s dual promises of equal protection and due process,” it reads.

As previously reported, in 2013, approximately 130 Republican leaders signed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court expressing their support for same-sex “marriage” as the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was being deliberated by the nine justices on the bench.


Those signing at that time included include Stephen Hadley, former security adviser to George W. Bushormer justice department official James Coney, former commerce secretary Carlos Gutierrez, and former Reagan budget director David Stockman. Former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman, former Massachusetts governors William Weld and Jane Wift, and former California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman.  The list of signees grew to over 300 with this week’s submitted brief.


As previously reported, possible presidential candidate Mike Huckabee told the American Family Association (AFA) in October that if Republicans continue to give in on same-sex “marriage”, he—and other Christians—will leave the party.


“[I]f the Republicans want to lose guys like me and a whole bunch of still God-fearing, Bible-believing people, go ahead and just abdicate on this issue, and go ahead and say abortion doesn’t matter, either. Because at that point, you lose me, I’m gone,” he declared. “I’ll become an independent. I’ll start finding people that have guts to stand. I’m tired of this.”

Wearing clothes made from cloth covered with tiny silver wires may reduce your heating bills in the future.

This is because scientists have found that a new material made of cotton coated in silver nanowires, effectively traps heat inside a person’s clothing, to keep the wearer cosy.

The say it is also breathable and lightweight, making it comfortable to wear.

Scientists from Stanford University in California developed the prototype material using silver because it reflects infrared radiation back towards the body, Popular Science reported.

In order to make the metallic material comfortable to wear, they dipped cotton into a solution of silver nanowires that can sit on top of everyday clothing, according to the study published in Nano Letters.

They created a fabric that’s able to trap 80 per cent of body heat.

It is as efficient as a bulky fleece when worn like a normal piece of clothing, emitting infrared radiation emitted by a wearer, back to their body.

But the clothes could be plugged into a computer, for example, to keep wearers even warmer.

The idea is that a small amount of electricity could effectively turn a jacket into an electric blanket.

Extra heat can be generated by harnessing the movement of electricity across the fabric.

And because the cloth is thin and breathable, it could one day replace bulky outdoor ski coats.

The researchers say that the clothes could also be worn indoors to negate the need for heating.

While it’s easy to imagine that cloth made from silver may be expensive, the researchers claim the total cost of silver needed to make a complete body suit would only cost $1 (66p).

The researchers claim that wearing such clothes could save a person $200 a year in heating costs, or save enough energy to power 1,000 light bulbs for 10 hours.

The cloth is not yet on sale and requires more testing, but the scientists are already working on another coating to keep clothes and their wearers cool in hot temperatures.

CURRENT USES OF NANOPARTICLES IN CLOTHES 

Tiny antibacterial particles from silver are woven into the fabric of some socks to kill bacteria that makes them smell.

The silver in the particles doesn't kill bacteria by touching it, but instead produces soluble ions that reduce the pong.

Studies concluded that some of the particles come out in the wash, with some of them warning that when the toxic metal dissolves in water and releases silver ions, it can enter the food chain, poisoning small creatures. 

However, others have said silver nanoparticles don't harm humans or the environment.

Research published in 2012 warned that bacteria may become resistant to silver if used in lots of everyday situations, which could have important implications, because the metal is used as an anti-bacterial in healthcare.

Silver is also rare and it's estimated that global resources could run out in as little as 30 years.

U.S. Immigration And Customs Enforcement Captures 2,000 Criminal Illegal Aliens...........

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents captured 2,000 criminal illegal aliens, ICE officials revealed earlier this week. The illegal immigrants rounded up during the sweep have all reportedly been convicted of crimes but had remained living on American soil.

The criminal illegal immigrants were a part of Operation Cross Check. The five-day “national dragnet” is a continuation of similar tactical operations which began in 2011, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
Department of Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said, “The focus is on public safety and national security,” in reference to the deportation of illegal immigrants.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Sarah Saldana had this to say about the criminal illegal immigrants captured during Operation Cross Check.

“Public safety is directly and significantly improved by deporting those individuals involved in crime. By focusing on those who pose the greatest risk to our communities, we are marshaling our limited resources in the most responsible manner.”

A total of 2,059 illegal immigrants were arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents during the sweep. The crimes committed by the individuals who entered the country illegally include child pornography, robbery, manslaughter, robbery, and rape, according to ICE officials. A little less than 1,000 of the criminal illegal aliens captured by the agents had been convicted on DUI charges.
The illegal immigrants arrested during Operation Cross Check include 476 felons who had been charged with immigration violations.
The Obama administration deported approximately 316,000 people during the most recent fiscal year, the smallest number since the president took office, according to a Los Angeles Times report. U.S. Border Patrol agents reportedly “turned around” approximately two-thirds of those individuals as they attempted to cross the Mexican border into America.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, President Obama’s DACA immigration executive order has been placed on hold by a U.S. District Judge in Texas. The Texas judge wants the Justice Department to respond to specific concerns about the implementation of specific portions of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals mandates. The Obama administration told U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen that the federal government had not moved forward with the 2012 executive action when legal proceedings first began. The White House has reportedly admitted that action had already begun in the three-year deportation reprieves for illegal immigrants.

ISIS Training Ground Supposedly Infiltrated At Nevada County State Park – Satirical Hoax Article Tricks Conservative Readers!.........

The imminent infiltration of the Islamic State, specifically the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), into the United States has become a prevalent fear among Americans who value the American way of life. With countless news stories originating from the Middle East of ISIS restrictions, in which most Americans would violate and pay with their lives under their Sharia Law, it is understandable why.

As a matter of fact, The Inquisitr reported numerous times on what happens to anyone who violates the radical interpretation of Sharia Law under ISIS. For the 21 percent of Americans who smoke, they’ll need to go cold turkey because under ISIS, smokers will die by beheading. Forget about using cell phones during bans, especially for women. Violators may lose their hands. And for those who identify with the LGBTQ lifestyle, they aren’t even considered human beings under ISIS. Without any defense in court, they’ll be blindfolded, thrown off of buildings, than stoned to death if they survive the fall.
With the fact that the aforementioned punishments under ISIS would surely bring misery to Americans, it has been relieving when news of an ISIS training ground was supposedly infiltrated and broken up in a Nevada County State Park made its rounds. Unfortunately for the conservative niche sites that helped push the article, it so happens the article is nothing more than a satirical hoax.
According to the original article by the Nevada County Scooper, an elaborate terrorist operation in Sierra Foothills state park, Malakoff Diggins, was infiltrated and broken up. The operation was written to be a collaboration between local authorities with Federal law enforcement. A spokesman for the local Sheriff’s department even made a supposed statement on the operation.

“We got’ em. Initially we thought this was another Honey Oil operation until we saw various men coming and going who did not fit the profile of a typical ‘Ridge’ production facility. It was clear after the second day of surveillance that we needed to bring the feds in.”

The latter part of the article seems to take an outlandish direction, reporting that sources close to the remote state park say police seized a rather large cache of ranch salad dressing and deer pictures. Those two items alone stand out from the other listed seized items which includes automatic weapons and laptops. The unnamed spokesman yet again made a statement on behalf of the Sheriff’s department on this enigmatic seizing.

“Yeah, the salad dressing thing is weird, but these fringe groups always have some strange artifact. We’ve seen this with the apocalyptic, end-of-the-world types who hoard beans and rice and Beatles memorabilia. It’s odd.”

The rest of the article seems to become more ridiculous with each passing sentence. In the end, it is evident such an article is satire. However, some news sites – mostly niche conservative – did not see that. Jews News is an excellent example in which they ran the article under their category “Diaspora,” a term which means a Jew who lives outside of Israel. Yet some sites who followed up understood the article was satire, using it to enforce the validity of other news. America’s Freedom Fighters is a testament to this, using the satire article to bring up valid reports of terrorist compounds in the United States, and how they are a huge danger to all Americans.
In conclusion, the satirical article has tricked many conservative readers who truly pass it on as factual. Some readers however do argue such an article actually mocks certain conservative views and stances. Either way, the fact such an article got enough traction is quite entertaining which in turn is debilitating since it poked fun at a serious situation here in the U.S.

Florida Mom Faces Prison Sentence For Refusing Son’s Circumcision.....

A mother who has taken flight with her son to prevent his circumcision could face a prison sentence if she fails have the boy undergo the procedure, a judge ruled, in a case that has become a rallying cry for ‘intactivists.’

The case, which began as a domestic dispute between Heather Hironimus and her husband, Dennis Nebus, over whether or not to circumcise their four-year-old son, has caught the attention of circumcision opponents, who call themselves ‘intactivists,’ as the courts have intervened in the matter.

Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Gillen on Friday said Hironimus was in contempt for violating an order to appear in court Friday with her son. Gillen called it “reprehensible” that she has not allowed the father to see his son since February 20, AP reported.

The judge, meanwhile, is determined to ensure that the child undergoes the medical process to have his foreskin removed.

“I will allow her to avoid incarceration or get out of jail if she signs the consent to the procedure,” Gillen told Hironimus’ attorney Thomas Hunker, who said he did not know the whereabouts of his client or her son.

In an interesting twist in the story, attorneys for the Sun Sentinel, a Florida newspaper covering the story, filed an emergency motion seeking to declare the order as unconstitutional. As the newspaper reported on its legal efforts, the court “denied the motion, ruling it did not fit the definition of an emergency because it didn’t involve ‘matters of life and death or instances of irreparable harm.’”

Initially agreeing to a parental planning agreement with her husband to have their son circumcised, the mother later changed her mind on the issue, thus beginning a bitter court case nearly as old as the child.
The father said he considered circumcision when his son was 3, after noticing the child was urinating on his leg. A pediatrician had diagnosed the son as having phimosis, a condition that prevents retraction of the foreskin. However, in court testimony Friday, Nebus said the mother “frightened the boy” over the procedure.
“My son has mentioned things to me that he’s scared to have his penis cut off,” he said.
In May, Judge Gillen, who has requested the media not reveal the identity of the child involved in the case, ordered the mother to comply with the circumcision, while also warning her not to tell her son she was against the procedure.
The judge blamed the mother for having the child’s story “plastered all over the internet” in a “direct, contemptuous violation of this court’s orders.”
“This child has been placed in a light that provides much too much scrutiny for a little boy,” Gillen said. “I blame no one but the mother for that.”
Meanwhile, the court battle has attracted the attention of groups opposed to circumcision. The ‘intactivists’ held protests outside several Palm Beach County medical facilities on Friday, as well as in front of the county courthouse in Delray Beach.

David Wilson, the founder of a group called Stop Infant Circumcision Society, called it “utter insanity for our courts to order the sexual mutilation of this child,” the Sun Sentinel reported.

Although still common practice in the United States, circumcision rates have begun to decline as some medical studies indicate the procedure may carry some risks.

The Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, for example, published a study in January suggesting that “circumcised boys are more likely than intact boys to develop autism spectrum disorder (ASD) before the age of 10.” The research was conducted in Denmark among a group of children born between 1994 and 2003. Over 340,000 boys were followed up to the age of nine between 1994 and 2013 and almost 5,000 cases of ASD were discovered.

Professor Morten Frisch of the Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen, who headed the research, said: “Our investigation was prompted by the combination of recent animal findings linking a single painful injury to lifelong deficits in stress response and a study showing a strong, positive correlation between a country’s neonatal male circumcision rate and its prevalence of ASD in boys.”
Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control points to other medical studies that show the procedure can lower a male’s risk of sexually transmitted diseases, penile cancer and urinary tract infections.

Exclusive: Lee Hieb, M.D., declares, 'Public health does not trump individual liberty'

Its hard writing this in the dark, under the covers, curled up in a fetal position. I’m trying to deny reality, but my head is about to explode. Liberty has been slipping through our American fingers like sand for the last several decades. But in the last week it began flowing away like the Mississippi River.

 

In the last several years we have seen nationalizing of all student loans – I even have to fill out a federal financial statement for a no-repay academic scholarship my son receives from a private college. We’ve seen banning of homemade lunches, banning of bake sales and outlawing of Thomas Edison’s light bulb. We are no longer free to sell homegrown produce without state intervention, and in my great agricultural state of Iowa raw milk is illegal. (And it’s a federal offense to bring it in from Nebraska!) We have businessmen in jail for importing the wrong subspecies of crustacean, and doctors in jail for choosing the wrong billing code from the 2-inch-thick book of options.

 

But in the last several months – indeed in the last weeks – there has been a literal torrent of new assaults on our liberty: In November 2014, the G20 countries redefined your money in the bank as something other than money. Therefore, in a banking collapse, you are not really insured and will be last in line behind the big derivative bailouts. Then, Obama used his pen and phone technique to ban 5.56 ammunition. Of course, he just stuck his toe in the water to see what happened, and since he apparently got away with it, nothing prevents him from banning 45s or SUVs or tanning booths, or anything else he despises. But the one that has me totally exercised is the recent position paper by the Department of Health and Human Services, “National Adult Immunization Plan” published Feb 5, 2015.

 

March 9, 2015, was the last day for public comment about a “Draft National Adult Immunization Plan” – a proposal by the orchestrators of Obamacare to forcibly vaccinate all adult Americans. It sounds very benign on the surface – they do not use the word force or coercion. They say in the prologue:

The NAIP is a five-year national plan. As a national plan, it will require engagement from a wide range of stakeholders to achieve its full vision. The plan emphasizes collaboration and prioritization of efforts that will have the greatest impact. The NAIP also aims to leverage the unique opportunity presented by the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. The NAIP is intended to facilitate coordinated action by federal and nonfederal partners to protect public health and achieve optimal prevention of infectious diseases and their consequences through vaccination of adults.

Is it just my sense of irony or is it a signal to fellow travelers that this is a “Five-year Plan”? Did they hire old Soviet central planners or come up with this all on their own? Anyway, the folks at HHS fully admit this is possible only through the implementation of the ACA, which we are learning is an unaffordable care act but one that allows data collection on every patient of every doctor who accepts federal funding.

 

Now, I have written several articles outlining my scientific concerns over vaccination. We can have an honest discussion over the science – although so far the critics of my papers have never done so, rather resorting to name-calling and wild pot shots. I still await any actual scientific refutation of my concerns. The closest came with one commentator who cited the falling deaths from childhood diseases, but he failed to examine the entire historical data, which show that over 90 percent of the fall in these diseases occurred before widespread vaccination was adopted. And he fails to note the other factors (Vitamin A and D levels, avoidance of anti-pyretic drugs) that may alter outcomes – it’s not just the vaccination rate.

And I have made the point that the pro-forced vaccination crowd are generally also the pro Roe v. Wade crowd – and you can’t have both. You cannot scream for a “woman’s right to choose” when it applies to abortion but give her no right to choose what gets administered to her in a syringe. The answer I received was this, “Dr. Hieb, you ignoramus” (OK, maybe he didn’t quite say it that way, but I could hear it between the lines), “you know that abortion is a private issue and vaccination is an issue of public health!”

 

Let me be clear. Public health does not trump individual liberty. End of story.

If you believe the opposite, you can ethically condone forced sterilization, because it improves the health and wholeness of the body politic. Think I’m exaggerating? Between 1897 and 1909 forced sterilization of mentally handicapped was approved into law in Michigan Indiana, Pennsylvania, Washington and, of course, California. And in 1927 such acts were deemed by the Supreme Court “constitutional.” No lesser light than Oliver Wendell Holmes himself justified the decision by saying, “It is better for all the world if, instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime, or to let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind.”

 

After the atrocities of the Holocaust, Americans briefly got a conscience about such things and reversed the policies of forced sterilization. But with time, creeping socialism and collective amnesia, old habits and human moral frailties resurfaced so that between 1973-1976 thousands of Native American women were sterilized without their consent by government physicians. And as late as 2010, in California, female inmates were sterilized involuntarily. Of course, these things always are done in the name of society or public health. When Ezekiel Emanuel proposes withholding money for medical care of the elderly he does so in the name of fairness – of using the money wisely, yada yada. We’ve heard this all so many times in so many guises.

 

Now it is vaccination. And the government toadies are banging the tocsin of Big Pharma that it is in the national social interest that every person be vaccinated against virtually everything. In spite of the recent admission by the CDC that this year the influenza vaccine is only 18 percent effective (I think less based on FDA reports), that vaccine is included in the mandatory slurry that will soon be administered to every adult – if the feds have their way. (By the way, I am not discussing the money-to-Big-Pharma motive, which is really driving the vaccination bus, as this is the subject of another column.)

 

So, to the point. Like everything else that’s truly important, it is very simple: If you Americans do not stand against this, it’s over. What liberty do you have if the federal government can force you to have a medical procedure, can force you to surrender your very body to their control? Answer: none. Because there is nothing that cannot be justified on the basis of “the good of society.” The Jewish Holocaust, the Great Leap Forward, the killing of the Kulaks, American Eugenics, Tuskegee experimentation, the cold water experiments of Birkenau, Dachau and Auschwitz, all were justified at the time by their respective leaders as for the good of society. Even doctors start believing that they can determine who should die or be sterilized for the good of the whole society. And if you as a doctor have qualms, it is much easier to just throw up your hands and say you have no choice – it’s a government mandate.

 

The position paper of the Department of Health and Human Services refers repeatedly to consulting the multiple “stakeholders” involved in vaccination decisions: “synergies between state, local, territorial, and tribal governments; health care providers; advocacy groups; vaccine manufacturers; academia and research organizations; payers and health plans; employers; and the general public.” They even cite the military. But, who is the real stakeholder? It is you. There is no “general public” when it comes to decisions about your personal health. No one cares more about the risks versus benefits of vaccination than you do personally. To leave it to a group, to treat you as a member of a group for medical care, is not ethical medicine. It is the stuff of jails and forced labor camps and socialist hellholes – and apparently American academia and bureaucrats. It is time to say no. Although he was probably confused at the time, I’ll quote Al Sharpton: “Resists we much.”
