By rejecting visa to Iran’s new UN envoy, Washington is jeopardizing the nuclear talks, Kaveh Afrasiabi, political analyst on Iran told RT. The move by the State Department also shows the power of right wing politicians in US decision making process.
RT: Given the significant improvement in relations we have seen between Tehran and Washington, why is such a move being taken now, do you think?
Kaveh Afrasiabi: This is a very regrettable decision by the White House that is legally questionable and politically unwise. It reflects the White House has appeased reactionary right wing elements of the US Congress who are at the forefront of opposing nuclear talks and the recent breakthrough in the Geneva agreement. And these same elements have now taken siege of this issue in order to throw some monkey rage in the process and wipe away some of the good will generated between Iran and the US as a result of a nuclear breakthrough. So I really think it is politically motivated and should be opposed by the United Nations’ leadership.
RT: The visa ban prevents Hamid Abutalebi from entering the US, but essentially it stops him from going to the UN, which is an international territory. Legally, is the US in breach of regulations?
KA: Exactly, because this decision puts the US in contempt of its international obligations. There is a series of international obligations with the UN that the US has as the host country. They are supposed to exempt foreign diplomats from the normal immigration screening procedure, for instance. And it is not up to the US to decide who Iran should choose as a staff diplomat at the UN. In fact Iran has chosen a very apt diplomat, a veteran diplomat who is Sorbonne educated, who is modern and a pragmatist.

RT: But Washington is saying that this man played a role in 1979 Hostage Crisis…
KA: First of all, that is a misstatement of fact because Hamid Aboutalebi has clarified that he only had a very limited role as an interpreter. And initially when the US embassy was taken over, he was not even there. It was a similar accusation against the current foreign minister Javad Zarif. A few years ago he was accused of being among the hostage takers and I personally had to go to the university in San Francisco and get a letter from his adviser to confirm that he was indeed a student back then in San Francisco and not among the hostage takers. And a similar accusation was leveled against president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2005. So it is a familiar old story unfortunately.
RT: How serious could this be? Could it have an impact on the relationship between the US and Iran? Could we perhaps see a reverse in the relationship?
KA: I think, this is going to cause a minor setback. In Iran it is widely viewed as another sign of US bullying, an overt sign of hostility toward Iran. It could have been a prudent move by the White House to prevent that. They sat silently when these reactionary elements in the US Congress – by taking some lies from the right wing US media, such as the Fox News and without any investigation whatsoever – were adopting those lies at face value. And then re-voting legislation unanimously, and it is quite unprecedented in recent memory in US Congress, and then shoving it down the throat of the White House. And the White House sheepishly following their lead. That really sets a really bad omen in Iran relations and also the ongoing nuclear talks.
RT: Is the US maybe trying to appease Israel in anyway, since Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has been a vocal critic of the US rapprochement with Iran?
KA: I think indirectly it does. Even the US Secretary of State John Kerry with his antiwar background should understand and sympathize with the fact that there is evolutionary process at work and people move beyond those things and yet the State Department obviously has caved in to these right wing pressures and we have seen the result today.

The Legal Aid Service, the Socorro Juridico, was established in 1977 by a group of lawyers as a means of defending the poor in the courts. Carrying their files they move constantly; I found them in a shed at the end of a vegetable allotment between the American embassy and the morgue. On the wall was a photograph of Maria Henriquez, director of the Human Rights Commission, who was kidnapped on October 3,1980, and tortured to death with razor blades. The administrator, Ramon Valledares, was taken three weeks later and nothing has been heard of him since. ‘We have noticed,’ a young woman said, ‘since Reagan’s election and the increase in US aid, new methods of torture have been introduced; previously people were simply shot.’

From 1980 to 1986 the United States sent more than $2 billion to;;: Salvador as ‘aid’. Eighty-five per cent of this has paid for arms, planes, helicopters, incendiary bombs, oxygen-reduction bombs, phosphorous bombs, Napalm bombs, cluster bombs, ‘anti-personnel’ weapons and munitions, electrified wire, surveillance equipment, more conscripted troops, more black helmets, more black boots and ‘the continued involvement’, wrote Amnesty International in 1984, ‘of all branches of the security and military forces in a systematic and widespread program of torture, mutilation, “disappearance” and the individual and mass extrajudicial execution of men, women and children from all sectors of Salvadorean society . . .’
During his presidency, Ronald Reagan more than once ‘certified’ that the El Salvador regime had satisfied the ‘human rights criteria’ required by the Congress for American military shipments to continue.

In 1985 a report by the Congressional Arms Control and Foreign Policy Caucus said that a four-month investigation had shown that the Reagan administration had misled and lied to Congress about the situation in El Salvador, even claiming that most of the US ‘aid’ money had gone to improve social conditions when, in fact, it had gone to the military. The United States, the report concluded, was becoming more deeply involved in El Salvador, in a manner what was ‘reminiscent of Vietnam’.

In 1989 Arena, the ‘party of the death squads’, took power in El Salvador and the number of random murders rose sharply. A State Department spokeswoman expressed ‘horror’ at these developments but said that US policy remained unchanged and US arms shipments would continue.

Only when disaster strikes does attention focus on ordinary people invariably of a short-lived kind, from which they emerge as victims, accepting passively their predicament as a precondition for Western charity. The Western perspective on the Ethiopian famine, that of people denied fundamental control over their lives, complied with the stereotype, and the ‘consensus’ was to give surplus food and cash to them. Their need was deemed ‘above politics’. That their predicament had political causes, many of which were rooted in the ‘developed’ world, was not widely considered a central issue. Since 1979, against historically impossible odds, the Nicaraguans have smashed the stereotype.

The depth of what has happened in Nicaragua and its wider implications, in particular the very real threat posed to the United States and its global system of ‘development’, struck me when I stayed in a frontier community, El Regadio, in the far north of the country. Like everywhere in Nicaragua, it is very poor, and its isolation has made change all the more difficult. However, since the Sandinistas threw out the dictator Anastasio Somoza in 1979 a ‘well baby clinic’ has been established, including a rehydration unit which prevents infants dying from diarrhoea, the most virulent third world killer. When I was there no baby had died for a year, which was unprecedented. More than 90 per cent of the children have been vaccinated against polio and measles, with the result that polio has been wiped out. The production and consumption of basic foods has risen by as much as 100 per cent, which means that serious malnutrition has disappeared …

Nicaragua, minuscule, impoverished and facing an invasion by the \ most powerful and richest nation, is indeed a threat. It is a threat to American foreign policy, not because its people and their leaders want to create ‘another Cuba’, isolated and with the Russians ensconced. It is a threat for the opposite reason: that Nicaragua offers an alternative model of development to anything the Soviet Union would want to impose. This is why American policy and propaganda are aimed at severing Nicaragua’s ties with its neighbours and ‘pushing’ it towards the only available benefactor, Moscow. It is the same policy and propaganda employed against Cuba in 1960 and 1961 and against Vietnam since May 1975.

Of course, the gravest threat posed by Nicaragua to the United States is that it offers to those nations suffering under American-sponsored tyrannies, such as El Salvador and Guatemala, a clear demonstration of regional nationalism at last succeeding in the struggle against hunger, sickness, illiteracy and pobreterria. And when the Reagan administration and its ‘New Right’ supporters say that the United States is in danger of ‘losing’ Central America, they are right. It is no coincidence that since the Sandinistas came to power the nationalist guerrillas in Guatemala have enjoyed a dramatic increase in support among people in at least nineteen of the country’s twenty-two provinces. The same is true of the resistance in El Salvador, which has grown in strength not because of some imaginary Ho Chi Minh Trail of arms supply masterminded by Russians and Cubans, but because one ‘good example’ in the region has survived against all odds. As Noam Chomsky has pointed out, ‘The weaker the country, the greater the threat [to US policy], because the greater the adversity under which success is reached, the more significant the result.” Unlike Vietnam, Nicaragua is neither isolated from its neighbours, nor has it felt obliged to embrace the Eastern bloc; more than 75 per cent of its foreign trade is with Western and nonaligned countries and only 11 per cent with the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.

For five years Nicaragua has fought an invasion directed by United States military officers and government officials in Honduras, where the full panoply of American ‘small war’ technology has been installed. In addition, Nicaraguan airspace is invaded almost every night by United States AC-130 attack aircraft, based in Panama, and every week by AWACS surveillance aircraft based in Oklahoma. American Naval task forces are on permanent station off both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Nicaragua. In 1983 the CIA mined Nicaragua’s harbours and blew up its main oil storage depot at Puerot Corinto.

In the same year the United States successfully brought pressure on the Inter-American Development Bank to stop a loan of $34 million to Nicaragua. The loan, already agreed, would have revitalised the Nicaraguan fishing industry and provided a substantial and cheap source of nutrition. In 1985, just as the same international bank seemed ready to approve $58 million in agricultural credits to Nicaragua, the United States Secretary of State, George Schultz, warned the Bank’s president that the loan risked complete withdrawal of American contributions. Despite its non-political charter, the Bank set aside the loan. A total American embargo now operates against everything Nicaraguan, denying its raw materials their most important market. What you are about to read is another step beyond research pioneered in the early 90s by author/historian Webster Tarpley based largely on deathbed “clues” provided by former Hitler bodyguard Otto Skorzeny and his box of photographs. Section 1. Establishment. (a) There is hereby established a Working Group on Financial Markets

At 1750 hours ET, I was contacted by my source within the Department of
Homeland Security regarding the current situation at the Bundy Ranch.
To put it bluntly, the people are being hoodwinked into believing that
the situation is being resolved. It is not. It is a strategic
de-escalation to fool the public. This source stated that the retreat of
the BLM agents and the release of the cattle was actually crafted as a potential plan yesterday (Friday, 11 April 2014) based on the following:

1. A military assessment of satellite and drone surveillance imagery of the “patriot resistance. Drones under the control of the U.S. military were in use, taking real-time photographic images of not just the activity at the ranch, but
“identifying the protesters, any arms and any supplies they might have or be carrying. “Mission accomplished.”

2. Real-time communication intercepts between patriots on-site and their off-site support;

3. Active monitoring of internet traffic regarding the coverage of events at ranch;

4. The monitoring of real-time video from the scene.

This source stated that a response by the patriot movement was
anticipated, although exceeded their expectations. Although this was a
real operation, they also ran this as a test case for future government
operations once they saw the response. They were also actively managing
the media, in some cases threatening to cut off White House access to
anyone covering the event.

Despite this, the coverage by the alternative media began to create a public relations problem that was not easily managed. Note the lack of acknowledgment by the White House regarding this event. They are intentionally framing it as a state issue, despite the fact that all federal response has been and continues to be from the White House. There is a reason for this – a reason that has not been identified in any of the public reports to date. I will explain in further detail in a follow-up report on Sunday, after this source attends [redacted] to obtain more specific information about future federal operations. Regardless, according to this source, the government will take back ‘their land’ as they must to fulfill

On March 6, 2012, the Wall Street Journal compiled a state-by-state list of the $17 billion in oil and natural gas equity interests CNOOC and Sinopec have acquired in the United States since 2010. Colorado: CNOOC gained a one-third stake in 800,000 acres in northeast Colorado and southwest Wyoming in a $1.27-billion pact with Chesapeake Energy Corporation. Louisiana: Sinopec has a one-third interest in 265,000 acres in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale after a broader $2.5-billion deal with Devon Energy. Michigan: Sinopec gained a one-third interest in 350,000 acres in a larger $2.5-billion deal with Devon Energy. Ohio: Sinopec acquired a one-third interest in Devon Energy’s 235,000 Utica Shale acres in a larger $2.5-billion deal. Oklahoma: Sinopec has a one-third interest in 215,000 acres in a broader $2.5-billion deal with Devon Energy. Texas: CNOOC acquired a one-third interest in Chesapeake Energy’s 600,000 acres in the Eagle Ford Shale in a $2.16-billion deal. On March 6, 2012, in a separate story, the Wall Street Journal described that China’s strategy implemented since 2010 by Fu Chengyu, who has served as chairman of both CNOOC and Sinopec, involved the following components: “Seek minority states, play a passive role, and, in a nod to U.S. regulators, keep Chinese personnel at arm’s length from advanced U.S. technology.” Harry Reid and Chinese solar investments in Nevada On April 3, 3012, Bloomberg reported Chinese billionaire Wang Yusuo, one of China’s richest citizens and the founder of Chinese energy giant ENN Group, had teamed up with Senate Majority Leader Reid to win incentives including land 113 miles southeast of Las Vegas that ENN sought to buy for $4.5 million, less than one-eighth of the land’s $38.6 million assessed value. Bloomberg reported ENN intended to create solar energy farms on the Nevada land, despite the nearly 50 percent plunge in solar panel prices globally in the previous 15 months that led to the bankruptcy of solar equipment maker Solyndra LLC, which had received approximately $535 million in U.S. government loan guarantees. Bloomberg further documented ENN had contributed $40,650 individually and through its political action committee to Sen. Reid over the previous three election cycles. Subsequently, on Sept. 4, 2012, Breitbart.com reported lawyer Rory Reid, the son of Sen. Reid, had been appointed the primary representative for ENN Energy Group, fronting the bid by the Chinese company to build a $5-billion solar panel plant on a 9,000-acre Clark County desert plot in Laughton, Nevada. A Reuters report published on Aug. 31, 2012, documented that Reid was recruited by ENN during a 2011 trip he took to China with nine other U.S. senators, supposedly to invite Chinese investment in the United States.
