American-made Saiga and Vepr Alternative: Firebird Precision TAC12A1....

American-made Saiga and Vepr Alternative: Firebird Precision TAC12A1....

Despite the focus on the AK47 and AK74 clones affected by the import recent ban, the Russian rifles are the easiest to replace with imports from other sources. Some of the more unique manual actions also banned from import will be harder to replicate, and no one I know of makes clones of Saiga or Vepr shotguns. The feeble Chinese efforts hardly count; I tested one, and after two shots I didn’t feel safe to fire the rest of the magazine. The Turkish Akdal MKA1919 I mentioned earlier has much to recommend it: light weight, rifle-like manual of arms, and low felt recoil, but its long-term durability proved imperfect, leading to the beefed up BR99 variant. Fortunately, MKA1919 can be made much closer to perfect by Firebird Precision.
It takes a pretty major re-build, but the metal lower, an additional, non-reciprocating forward charging handle, and improved gas system all make TAC12 an extremely desirable shotgun. I shot one of the prototypes at 2013 SHOT show and was extremely impressed by the transparency with which it could be used to bust clays.

2, 5, and 10 round magazines are available for hunting and defense, and up to 18-round box magazines for 3-gun competition. With lower spring pressure than Saiga magazines, TAC12 mags are much easier to load. Recoil is similar to Vepr 12, which is to say, not worth noticing. The gun is optimized for lower recoil ammunition, from promotional birdshot up to regular loads, but magnum ammunition is not recommended due to increased wear on the gas piston.

Magazine release, safety, and bolt stop all mirror AR-15 controls. Charging handles mirror HK G3 (front left) and AK/Sig550 (right). Stocks can be specified in a variety of lengths and styles.
Five rounds of buck, five rounds of slug. Distance: 12 yards.

If you don’t have a MKA1919 to convert, Firebird makes all-new TAC12A1 that looks the same but incorporates two AR-15-style take-down pins for even quicker filed-stripping. The guns aren’t cheap at $1,900, but that’s about what a Vepr 12 customized for sports shooting would cost all said and done. And where else would you find a ten-shot 12ga shotgun that even sub-100 pound five-foot teenage girls can shoot comfortably and run efficiently?

According to a local news story, a 911 operator recently offered–repeatedly–what may just be the worst advice ever given to a victim of a home invasion.
When NJ Logan of Holmes Beach, Florida heard suspicious noises downstairs in her home, she grabbed her gun, a compact revolver, and went to work. She headed downstairs, hollering warnings to the baddies as she went. Apparently they heeded her warnings, because she never laid eyes on them–only the damage they’d wrought.
Broken glass and a cut screen on a door showed how they’d gotten in. She couldn’t be sure they were gone and not just hiding, and she dialed 911 to summon police.
According to Logan, “When I called 911, she kept saying, ‘Well put the gun down, put the gun down,’ and I said, ‘I’ll put the gun down when I see the police.'”
Fortunately, Logan was smart enough to ignore the operator’s bad advice. Just imagine what may have happened if she had set down her gun and a lurking bad guy had come at her! Yow.
Similar burglaries had occurred in her neighborhood. While nobody was caught in this one, hopefully the bad guys have been scared straight by this gun-toting grandma.

Forget ‘What Melee Weapon for SHTF?’ and ask ‘What Armor?’

Forget ‘What Melee Weapon for SHTF?’ and ask ‘What Armor?’

Source: Survivalistboards.com
If you’ve spent any time around the more survival-oriented parts of the Internet, you’ve seen the question of what type of melee weapon is best for SHTF, which comes up something on the order of 1 billion times. It’s a perennially popular forum topic, but never once have I seen anyone give the right answer to this critical question.
So what is the right answer to the question of what melee weapon is best for SHTF? There are two right answers, actually. The first right answer is, “Whatever melee weapon you’ve trained most extensively with.” But maybe you’d like to pick up some weapons training, and you’re not sure which weapon to train on. In that case, you need to back way up and answer a different question entirely. That question is: what types of armor will people be wearing post-SHTF?
Throughout history, a particular society’s dominant melee weapon is always the concrete, physical embodiment of the answer to the question, “What can I make with the tools and materials at hand that will enable me to kill someone who’s wearing the kind of armor that I’m most likely to encounter in combat?” On the flip side of the coin, a society’s most popular armor is whatever will defend against the dominant weapon.
So before we can think about weapons in a post-SHTF scenario, we must first think about armor. Yes, I know it’s a bit of a chicken-and-egg question as I’ve framed it above, but in our case it makes sense to talk armor first. In modern 2014 America, we have access to an array of fine melee and ranged weapon options that would blow the ancients’ minds. Almost every weapon that has ever achieved any degree of popularity is now available in the modern material of your choice and in a variety of quality levels that in most cases would shame all but the greatest master weaponsmiths of old. So once you figure out what type of armor you’ll be facing post-SHTF, you can take your pick of amazing weaponry.

Let’s Talk Armor

Your dual-wielding ninja fantasies won’t survive your first real fight, and assuming that you survive it yourself, you’re going to start looking for ways to protect your vitals the next time around.
Warriors wear armor. This is true in almost every culture since the beginning of time. There are only two places really where this isn’t true: 1) in societies where males duel over honor, and 2) in Hollywood movies about the apocalypse. With regard to the former, these duels all take place in the context of a wider society that still recognizes rule of law. When the rule of law prevails, people might wear weapons and frequently take violence into their own hands, but they don’t generally walk around wearing armor.
With regard to Hollywood, I can only imagine that post-apocalyptic warriors don’t bother wearing armor because the costume department doesn’t think they’d look sufficiently menacing wearing motorcycle helmets, pads, and puffy jackets.
But think about it. Take a moment, close your eyes, and really try to imagine that the S has hit the F and you and your friends are about to leave your safe zone and travel through an area where you might encounter armed gangs. And for whatever reason, either you’re out of bullets or everyone else is. If you’re not imagining that you’re looking around for something–anything at all–that you can cover your body with that would prevent a fatal blow from damaging vital organs, then you’re not taking the exercise seriously enough.
If you really, truly fear for your life and you believe that some thugs wielding melee weapons might jump you, then you will get creative about body armor. You won’t care how it looks. You’ll be rockin’ that pink bike helmet you found and maybe have it paired with an umpire vest that’s overlaid with PVC and a toilet seat cover that you scavenged from an abandoned house. If you think it’s going to keep blade out of your rib cage or a club off of your skull, you’re going to wear it with pride. Your dual-wielding ninja fantasies won’t survive your first real fight, and assuming that you survive it yourself, you’re going to start looking for ways to protect your vitals the next time around.
I don’t personally know what type of armor people will be wearing in a SHTF scenario, but my guess is that bike and motorcycle helmets will be extremely popular, just because they’re so ubiquitous right now. I’d also imagine that any kind of protection that you can find in a sporting goods store will also be popular. Commonly available hard materials that can be cut with a hacksaw and even shaped a bit, materials like PVC pipes, fiberglass, tin, and other metals will also be worked into rubber- and cloth-padded outfits in any number of ways. So a few trips to Home Depot and your local sporting goods store will give you plenty of material to start with.
You can also take a look at some of the makeshift armor that civilians have been putting together in places like Ukraine and Egypt. I used a shot from Ukraine at the top of this post, and there are more linked up in this SurvivalistBoards.com thread on armor.

Conclusion

If you’re really serious about this whole prepping thing, you’ll spend some time now working on designs for your own post-SHTF suit of armor. This effort will not only go a long way towards keeping you safe in a without-rule-of-law (WROL) situation, but it’ll also give you the insight you need in order to answer the “what melee weapon” question.

Hiding in Plain Sight: Furniture to Hide Your Guns....

Hiding in Plain Sight: Furniture to Hide Your Guns....

grab-it-and-growl
Guns are great. They just are. They’re valuable tools in a pinch, and they need to be there when you need them. In your home, it’s great to keep one or more guns handy, and it’s wise to keep them out of sight. Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot more furniture that functions and looks like “regular” furniture while doubling as a hiding place for firearms.
Concealing guns in this way is a good idea for a number of reasons. It often keeps firearms conveniently stored in the areas where you spend most of your time in case of emergency. Drawing attention to your guns by hanging them on the wall or displaying them in a glass case may cause them to become targets of theft. Having them out in the open allows them to get dusty and may let children or other untrained people handle them. Also, concealment may save you from losing valuable firearms if your home is burglarized when you’re away.
The possibilities are really only limited by your imagination. Here are a few products that may give you an idea of what’s out there for hiding your stuff in plain sight.
CouchBunker Custom Sofa Couch Safe
CouchBunker Custom Sofa Couch Safe (Photo courtesy of Heracles Research)
The CouchBunker may be one of the most extreme products out there as it combines several desirable features: It’s a fire-rated safe hidden within a custom built sofa or couch, and you can choose to get bullet resistant cushions for it. The cushions can serve as portable personal shields against gunfire and other attacks, and they say they “will stop a 44 Magnum at point blank range.” The Made-in-USA safe within will hold up to thirty rifles and other goodies.
Lightweight versions for boats and RVs are available, and you can get a matching ottoman safe if you like.

Secret Compartment Furniture has one of the widest selections I’ve seen of attractive handmade furnishings with hidden compartments for your firearms or other valuables. Their products are handmade by Amish craftsmen and are built to order so you can easily customize any of the items you see on their site. Sizes range from bedside tables to book cases, and many things in between.

LedgeLOKR shelves allow you to hide items in a locking compartment inside a high quality, good-looking wood shelf. Several sizes are available, and they also offer non-mechanical versions that look the same so you can balance your decor without breaking the bank. They’ve got shorter ones as seen in the photo, plus longer ones for storing rifles or shotguns.

Smith Wesson S&W M&P 15 Sport Rifle......

Smith Wesson S&W M&P 15 Sport Rifle......

IMGP0798
Smith & Wesson never does any category half way, and the M&P (Military & Police) line has been a huge hit for the gunmaker. At the core of the line are the S&W M&P15 rifles. which provide an array of configurations to buyers. One of the big values I’ve discovered in the Smith & Wesson line is the M&P15 Sport.

Fit, Finish, and Feel

Smith & Wesson has done a great job avoiding a “me too” AR lineup by using their own forgings and making almost every part in house. The end result of those design updates and in-house manufacturing attention to detail is a tight upper to lower receiver fit and a great, consistent finish across all the rifle parts. The Melonite coating prevents corrosion on the barrel and also provides a really nice finish that makes the rifle look a lot more expensive that it is. Generally quality suffers for value rifles at this gun’s $600 street price, but this is the first “inexpensive” AR I have shot that is not a rattle trap and definitely feels like a more expensive rifle.

Features

The S&W M&P15 Sport has the features of any basic AR-15 plus a few key upgrades minus the rarely used forward assist. Personally, I have yet to have the need for forward assist. If I have a round that does not chamber, I simply re-chamber another round.
The rifle includes a 30-round PMAG magazine, 6-position telescoping stock, chrome-lined gas key and bolt carrier, T-markings on the top picatinny receiver, proper staking of the castle nut and gas key, and adjustable front sight. Also, on the new model you will get a rear folding Magpul MBUS sight. My older version had a detachable fixed rear sight.
One of the more distinctive features of the lower forged receiver is the integrated enlarged winter trigger guard, a nice upgrade.
IMGP0802
IMGP0801
The barrel is unique in both the twist and rifling. The M&P15 includes the very popular 1:8 rifling twist for barrels, which equally stabilizes both light and heavier weight bullets equally well.
The S&W M&P15 Sport 5R rifling itself is also unique and provides a rifling land profile somewhere between standard rifling and polygonal rifling. Although not proprietary to S&W, 5R rifling was developed in Russia and uses 5 lands and 5 grooves instead of the traditional 6 lands and grooves. The sides of each land are cut at a 65 degree angle versus a harsh 90 degree angle on standard rifling. The benefits are less bullet deformation (because the edges of each land do not cut into and deform the bullet jacket) and potentially higher velocities. When the bullet jacket is less deformed, there will be less jacket fouling in the grooves. The results are better consistency of accuracy from shot to shot, greater bullet stability over multiple shots, and ultimately a rifle that’s easier to clean.
5R Rifling

Function and Accuracy

A friend and I have run over 400 rounds through the S&W M&P15 Sport during a number of shooting sessions. No surprises here. The S&W was a perfect performer from the first magazine to the last, and it functioned as you would expect any quality AR-15 to perform.
Accuracy testing of the S&W M&P15 Sport was with my Simmons Predator Quest 6-24×50 scope. Although I doubt many will use this power of a scope on a regular basis, it has become my go-to scope for wringing out accuracy from guns I review. I highly doubt this gun will be used for 100 yard group shooting, but this $600 gun turned in some great groups. Here were the average 5-shot group results at 100 yards:
  • HORNADY TAP URBAN 55GR = 1.5”
  • WOLF FMJ 62GR = 1.7”
  • WINCHESTER FMJ 55GR = 1.4”
  • FEDERAL MATCH 69GR = 1.1”
  • HANDLOADS HORNADY AMAX 75GR = 1.25”
IMGP0804
IMGP0803

Final Thoughts

The specs on the S&W M&P15 Sport are impressive and match those of rifles that cost $300-$400 more. Much of this value is due to Smith & Wesson’s commitment to in-house manufacturing, which delivers a street priced AR well below what other manufacturers can. Another of those reasons is that dropping the forward assist and integrating the trigger guard trim the weight here and there to a very light 6.45lbs, which is very fast handling for a standard barrel profile.
The S&W M&P15 Sport is great shooting gun with the 1:8 twist and 5R rifling. Add in the extras like chrome bolt carrier group, integrated trigger guard, and Melonite coated barrel, and it is understandable why the S&W M&P15 Sport has become so popular. It is just a great deal on a great shooting rifle with all the reliability of a high dollar AR. The S&W M&P15 Sport is one of the better buys on the market for someone looking for a quality, reliable, and accurate AR for any sport, defensive, or duty purpose.

Are The Wal-Mart Closings In Jade Helm 15 States A Sign We’ve Sold Them The Rope They’ll Use To Hang Us With By Shopping At Wal-Mart All These Years?

poster-0.jpgAll News Pipeline – by Stephan Stanford
With news of numerous Wal-Mart supercenters now being ‘temporarily closed’ (6+ months each which brings us to October 2015 or later) inat least 4 different states now tied to the Jade Helm 15 ‘exercises’ due to what we’re being told are ‘plumbing problems’, will these massive stores soon be used as ‘food distribution centers’ and to house the headquarters of invading troops from China, here to disarm Americans one by one as promised by Michelle Obama to the Chinese prior to Obama leaving the White House?    Astute story commenters were quick to point out that any plumbing problem can be fixed in much less time than 6 months, even in such large supercenters, and to have several of these 6-month closings all at once in states tied to Jade Helm 15 and martial law exercises (Florida, Texas, California and Oklahoma) reeks of something much deeper than ‘plumbing issues’. The fact that China has DEMANDED Americans be disarmed and the scheduled ‘reopening dates’ (if they EVER reopen at all!) of these stores will be after Jade Helm 15 is completed are raising many questions aboutwhat is really going on among those who are paying attention to events in Barack Obama’s ‘new America’ as seen in more detail below. One reader tells us that one of these Wal-Mart stores had just recently been remodeled and didn’t have any plumbing problems while the note below is from a source who recently called her local Wal-Mart and discovered they may NEVER reopen!
Called one of the Walmarts (Midland, TX location) just now.  Phone was answered by a woman “Thank you for calling Walmart customer care, may I begin this conversation by requesting your first and last name?”  (WHAT?)  I just said I was calling to check store hours.  She asked if I was calling about a particular location.  I told her the one on Midland Drive.  She said that the store was closed last night at 7pm.  I said “Oh?  For good?” She said “Yes, at first they said it would be for maybe 6 months but after further review they have decided to close indefinitely.”  LOL…plumbing problems my you-know-what.  Something fishy is up, whether it has to do with OJH or just Walmart closing stores because they are hurting.  Either way, very deceitful the way they are doing whatever this is they are doing. I don’t dare call the other stores from my phone because when the phone first picked up I got the recording of “This call may be monitored or recorded….”.
With ‘emperor Obama’ now attempting to dismantle our country for good as referenced in the many links included at the bottom of this story and as America descends one day closer into full-scale countrywide ‘police-state’ tyranny, numerous events taking place the last several days should cement into our heads the fact that our country isn’t America anymore and despite attempts by the mainstream media and trolls stalking alternative news websites attempting to downplay videos like the ones below, we can see that America is quickly becoming Iraq or Afghanistan as country-wide preparation for a massive event is now being taken to the next level.
In the 1st video below just released by
Felipe Soto we see a National Guard drill taking place in the residential streets of Ontario, California while in the 2nd video below we see a US Veteran getting pulled over by a TANK (no, it’s an armored personnel carrier according to the police officer and the TROLLS who stalk alternative news sites) seeking to divert our attention from the obvious – it’s a vehicle of war on the streets of America.
The recent email sent to
All News Pipeline from a deep background source seen below shares of another event that recently happened in Yuma, Arizona and begs us to ask the question, has Jade Helm 15 already begun? Is the massive exposure of various martial law-style ‘drills’ across the country by the alternative media causing the NWO to accelerate their plans for a full-scale police-state crackdown prior to the rest of the country awakening and DEMANDING that these be stopped? This new Intellihub story tells us that the federal government is now actively seeking ‘role players’ for simulating the relocation of US citizens to detention camps in Phoenix, Arizona. Are all of these events that are now happening in these  ‘Jade Helm 15′ states just a coincidence or a very clear pattern? The answer is clear to us.
ANP, I was at a friends home for dinner last night and a guest had something very interesting to say about his trip home Yuma, AZ  Friday. He stopped at a rest area on I-8 before getting on I-10 to Phoenix.  When he was coming out of the restroom he was surprised to see the parking lot filling up with unmarked vehicles which he first thought were border patrol. There were 3 helicopters not far in the desert  and the men from the vehicles had blow horns ordering everyone to stay in their cars. He said they were dressed in desert camo fatigues and were not border patrol. I asked everyone if they heard of Jade Helm 15 and no one had. So, I told them to look it up and they all did. The guest that witnessed the incident looked up with a stunned look on his face and said that was a military operation he saw. Looks to me we are much closer and Jade Helm 15 is in motion.

811985a5-6603-4a73-af92-a077b242ae62.jpg

To the government trolls who stalk ANP daily, can you really say these exercises are just ‘normal’ National Guard training? These ‘exercises’ are clearly another attempt to ‘normalize’ Americans seeing the military on the streets and look more like what we’d see in a police-state dictatorship than in a ‘free country’.

Is this really what we want all future generations to face when being pulled over by police in America? Is this normal or more proof that the war has come home to America? It seems to us to be a blatant attempt at citizen intimidation, total overkill.

The following stories found at the links included below should be enough to convince any American that our country and Rights are now being dismantled on a massive scale. Please share this information far and wide.

Operation Jade Helm
Q. Hi Lynn, Can you do a session on "operation Jade Helm 15" that the military will be doing a unconventional exercise? This has been a hot topic online. And the military is pushing back on the publics concern. As many think this could be a prelude to martial law. http://chuckbaldwinlive.com/Articles/tabid/109/ID/3304/Operation-Jade-Helm-Should-We-Be-Worried.aspx
A. As I tune into this several things start to jump out. The US is very concerned with an attack. I keep hearing the phrase "They have been poking the bear for a while now" and my impression is that it is referring to Russia. The US has several countries against it, and they have used their strong military and power of the dollar to protect themselves. I see that power is fading... Other militaries have realized that with combined efforts and the advancement in technology they can overpower the US. Once the dollar fails (and gold or gold backed currency takes effect) the US loses even more power and influence. The US is being put in a very vulnerable situation.
Even though the targeted areas for attack that stand out are on the east coast (New York and DC) and west coast (San Jose area), the ideal place for occupation of outside troops exists in the more central part of the country (they ultimately want to own the growing land).
When these exercises commence I also see some high government using this exercise as a reason to get their secondary governmental base up and running in the Denver location. This secondary location will ultimately become the primary location (I don't see them ever going back to the DC area).
I see this "exercise" used as an excuse to erect little "mini bases" all through the strategic states involved. The government doesn't want to be on the coasts, but rather nestled in between them where they know other countries want to ideally occupy. These structures are being set up quickly with materials that appear to be temporary, but I don't see the bases being disassembled, but rather more permanent structures being added as time progresses. It looks like the government is concerned with this area/location, and they need something quick in order to move troops to that area, and more permanent buildings will be added as time goes by.
I also see a desensitization occurring. By calling this an "exercise" the government is able to have massive quantities of troops and supplies located throughout those states, and it gets people "used to it." If and when the exercise converts to something real, the people are used to their presence and the shock factor (that could turn into a revolting situation) isn't as apt to happen.
When the exercises begin (or this is still in the status of exercise) they will start small testing locations of martial law. I get that Texas is the real concern (and that is why in the "exercise" it is labeled as the "hostile" in that area- it is symbolic of something real they are facing.) They need Texas on board during the "real" attack and not rebelling. The US can't fight an inside and outside battle at the same time.
I also see that practices for evacuation and a "camp" situation will occur... Then I see a bug flying toward a lighted bug zapper with a message of "don't fly into the light." I take this to mean if they start to evacuate and send people to "pretend camps" DON'T GO! They are testing complacency and what people will do and how they will react.
And that is all I have for this reading. Don't live in fear, but stay educated and alert to what is going on around you. Question everything, and listen to your gut. Love and light-
