     A sixteen-year-old, dual-enrolled student, Grace Lewis, is the subject of religious intolerance by humanities professor Lance "L.J." Russum at Polk State College in Lakeland, Florida.

Grace and her parents reached out to Liberty Counsel when Russum gave her four (4) straight zeros because she refused to conform to his personal world views of Marxism, Atheism or "Anti-theism", Feminism, and homosexuality.

Professor Russum expressed blatant and pervasive anti-Christian bias throughout the class, such as the following essay question: “Why did Christianity, and its male gods, seek to silence these women [the nuns]?"

In other essays where Grace refused to concede that Christianity was false, violent, or oppressive to women; that Martin Luther's motivations for the Reformation were wholly secular; and that Michelangelo's sculptures and paintings communicated that “same-sex relationship is NOT A SIN," Mr. Russum gave her a total of four straight zeros.

+ + Russum's classroom behavior is a reflection of his discriminatory personal biases.

Mr. Russum's Facebook likes and profile pictures include Fidel Castro and Jesus Christ making an obscene gesture.

His college email signature line includes a quote from a Marxist who praises Lenin, Stalin, the Khmer Rouge, and Adolf Hitler. These, along with the inappropriate course content, show that Professor Russum is seeking to impose his own values on students, in violation of the Constitution.

Liberty Counsel asked the dean to investigate the professor and his curriculum.

Liberty Counsel demanded (1) a full and independent review of Mr. Russum's behavior and course content; (2) appropriate grading of Grace's four "zero" assignments by a different professor; (3) a written apology; and (4) assurances that future courses taught by Mr. Russum, if any, will be free from such unlawful discrimination.

In its response, Polk State General Counsel concluded that no evidence of any discrimination exists because Grace received an overall grade of “A" for this class. Grace clearly earned the grade. However, the “A" was awarded only after Liberty Counsel's demand letter, and we have no reason to believe she would have received an appropriate grade based on the four straight zero grades and the professor's and the dean's prior communications.

A public college professor cannot openly discriminate against a student throughout a course and then award a good grade at the end to avoid accountability for the violations.      
     We have drafted an open letter to the Polk State College administrators and Board of Trustees expressing our outrage over the blatant anti-Christian bigotry of Professor Lance "L.J." Russum. We expose the fact that his personal bias is infused into his classroom.
      + + Mr. Russum should not be permitted to use his position to punish students who do not conform to his anti-Christian views.   According to its website, the college's core values are service, integrity, knowledge, diversity, and leadership. No student should be subjected to such outrageous bias and outright hostility to their values by a professor. Being a professor is not open season to belittle and punish students merely because they do not subscribe to the professor's radical opinions. 

Under the guise of open-mindedness, tolerance and anti-bullying - these liberal-minded  professors have become the closed-minded, intolerant BULLIES!

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
It’s official, the first amendment to the constitution is under a full blown assault by the radical left. Under the context that some speech may be deemed offensive, liberals have been trying to impose restrictions on our rights to free speech from our college campuses to our political debates. This is particularly true when it comes to Islam. Nearly every terrorist attack we have recently witnessed, from the Charlie Hebdo massacre and the Benghazi assault, to the shooting this past weekend in Texas have been blamed on “offensive speech.” The liberal media is frantically trying to frame the narrative to convince the eternally gullible that it is the first amendment and Americans insensitivity that is responsible for these atrocious acts. It is the same backwards ideology that they use to justify the mass rioting and looting we see in Baltimore. Muslims are an oppressed minority who are being treated disrespectfully; therefore, their actions are justified. If that’s the case, then what will happen when the majority has finally decided we have had enough?
This is a battle long in the making, and it started in 2009 when the U.N. called for a resolution banning criticism of Islam. Pamela Geller points out in her article that this resolution was called for right about the time President Obama started stacking his administration with Islamists. Furthermore, in December of 2011 President Obama pushed the U.N. to implement this ban. Though the wording of this resolution specifically banned any criticism, or stereotyping of religious people in general, the fact that it was an initiative of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation speaks volumes. According to Jim Hoft, author of the Gateway Pundit article, the Islamic organization has been pushing resolutions condemning the criticism of Islam since 1999. Islamic organizations in America also supported such resolutions.
While the wordings of these resolutions claim to protect all religions from criticism and stereotyping, the truth is far different. The U.N. and the United States have remained virtually silent as there is an all out genocide being waged against Middle East Christians. Day in and day out we are bombarded with grotesque images of beheadings, and people being burned alive. Radical Islamists routinely murder people for being gay, they stone their women for not wearing burqas and they will slaughter an entire village for not being Muslim. Through these atrocities, our leaders would have us believe that raising our voices in defense of these people is criticism of Islam, and it should not be tolerated. They would have us believe that these animals are committing these horrendous acts in response to a perceived injustice, and that we should be tolerant and understanding of their perspective. Just this week it was discovered that Muslims had crucified three brothers in Libya. The reason they were crucified is because Muslims believe that dying in the manner Christ died is a great insult; and yet, we are supposed to feel guilt that we insulted them for having a cartoon contest? That’s insane.
Islamists do nothing to pay us the respect they demand, nor do the liberals that support them. In fact, they do nothing but mock our religious beliefs while they seek to destroy our cultural values. Christianity in America is under full assault and no one in government is coming to its defense. While liberals are demanding limits to free speech over the incident in Texas, they remained completely silent as the National Endowment of the Arts displayed a piece known as “Piss Christ.” This was considered a piece of art, and the liberals hid behind the first amendment when it was revealed that some found it offensive. In fact, our entire society is inundated with offensive, grotesque art from pornography, to extremely graphic movies and video games that liberals claim to be protected by the first amendment.
What’s even more disheartening is the fact that many people seem to be buying into this narrative. Many American’s seem to have given in, and out of sense of frustration, seem willing to surrender their rights in order to placate those who would just as soon see them dead. These are the same Americans that demanded we go overseas and fight the enemy so we don’t have to fight them here. These are the same politicians who sent our troops, people who swore an oath to uphold and defend the constitution against all enemies, to fight a war they had no intention of winning. These troops are now home and they are missing limbs and sanity. They are jobless and confused, committing suicide at a rate of twenty two a day; and now we trash their sacrifices as we are expected to cower in fear to an enemy that will kill you no matter what you do. Based on the events of this past weekend, it’s safe to say that Americans are sick of cowering in fear. We are tired of being told we are not decent people. We have welcomed these Muslims in our country, let them build their mosques because we believe in our first amendment, and that it should apply to all Americans; only, we were taken advantage of and lied to. We are tired of tolerating the intolerable and I for one will not be surrendering any of my rights for any man that will only spit on me once I do. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Senator Virgil Smith Is Named As Suspect In Shotgun Shooting [Breaking]

Senator Virgil Smith has been named as a key suspect in a shooting that took place near his home early this morning. Police investigation is ongoing, and details continue to emerge about what is apparently a domestic dispute that involved a shotgun being fired at a woman in a vehicle near Senator Smith’s home.

WXYZ Detroit reported that Detroit police Sgt. Cassandra Lewis says the shooting appears to be connected to a domestic situation.
Detroit police are continuing to investigate after more than one shotgun blast was reported near the home of Senator Smith at approximately 1:00 a.m. today.
Sources claim that State Senator Virgil Smith had been arguing with his ex-wife earlier in the evening, and later, at least two shots were fired into her white 2015 Mercedes Benz that was parked near his home.
Police held Senator Smith for questioning earlier today, but he has been released. There have been no arrests in relation to the shooting, and police are referring to this as an ongoing domestic dispute investigation.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the ex-wife of Virgil Smith is a prominent Ann Arbor businesswoman, and she was not in the car at the time. No injuries have been sustained as a result of the shooting.

“Police spokeswoman Cassandra Lewis declined to release details because the incident was considered a domestic matter. She said a person called police to report being shot at, and that the person suspected of firing the gun was not at the home when police arrived.”

Senator Virgil Smith Jr. is a state senator in Michigan’s fourth senate district. He was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 2003 to 2008. He served the three terms allowed under current term limits law. Smith is the son of former Michigan State Senator Virgil Smith. In 2010, he was elected to the Michigan Senate.
Senator Smith’s website speaks about “working for the people” and he declares his mission.

“I did not come to Lansing with a set of goals I wanted to accomplish or an agenda to enact. My goal has always been to represent my constituents, to make your issues my issues, and to pass good legislation to help make your lives better.

There has been no statement released by the office of Senator smith about the shooting yet, and he has refused to speak with the media.

The legal team led by Kerry W. Kircher, who was appointed House General Counsel by Speaker John Boehner in 2011, claimed that the insider trading probe violated the separation of powers between the legislative and executive branch.
In 2012, members of Congress patted themselves on the back for passing the STOCK Act, a bill meant to curb insider trading for lawmakers and their staff. “We all know that Washington is broken and today members of both parties took a big step forward to fix it,” said Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Ohio, upon passage of the law.”

I am now settling in to the fireside chat that you always have on Sunday’s. Here is the latest. These sessions will be ending soon. The need for them will no longer be — all will be known and all goods delivered and those who have moved or died will have to do some sleuthing but that too can be done. If family members remember and produce the information they have, it still most certainly be reviewed. There was never an intention to not have all participants receive who followed the “Yellow Brick Road”. And that is exactly what it was. Pay attention to how it even is that today : the” Yellow Brick Road.” Kudos to you — you did it; how many of your friends would have gone where you have gone? Not to many!! No, not so many. You did it on a nebulous faith but you knew somewhere in your soul that it was the right thing to do.

Are we there yet.? Always the same question. Yes! You are there. But here is not here. Here is where you are today; and here is a good place to be. There will be a manifestation and that will seem so surreal compared to all the long years of waiting. Just realize that the wait has been worth it. The cogs in the many tiny pieces and the machinations of many personalized issues are the obstacle that you can’t quite see. If you could you would have never been so intensely shouting about having it now! Better to have the conservative moves than rash ones. You can continue to build a feeling of satisfaction, of wise decisions made years ago and very soon begin implementing whatever plans you have made for yourself. That is a given! You ask, or wonder, “But is it?” Yes it is a given. Many ways the ruling forces could derail you; if you knew the ways you would not be sarcastic nor rude nor uncivil. If you think, you already know those but you don’t want to hear them well make it your business to just be ready when the other shoe drops. For drop —it will!! Dear Zap and Susan, I was sad to hear the news of your friends suffering with Cancer, so I want to share information I have learned over the years on how to get rid of this. First of all Cancer cannot survive in an Alkaline environment also high vibrations, so a vegetarian diet is key, certain fruits also this is what I have learned. According to some great doctors foods like Lemongrass kill cancer cells mature cells and in vitro. Brussels sprouts, cabbage, green veggies, carrots, garlic, onions, ginger, tomatoes, lemons, limes, cauliflower, green leafy plants. Spices, Turmeric, Curry basically. Pineapple excellent, grapefruit. Things to not eat, are all animal meats should never be eaten when sick. Dairy, sugar, soy products. Chemotherapy kills people.!! Someone said chemo was created as a biological chemical weapon to kill!!! My friends Doctor said it can create Leukemia! Can you see how they bleed us dry making us sick then getting rid of us by killing us!!
Many plants in our rain forests kill cancer also.

WWII soldier's lost gift to mom returns home for Mother's Day......

MILLVILLE, Mass. –  This is the story of a loving tribute from a soldier preparing for war to his mother on the other side of the continent, who didn't know if she would ever see her boy again.
The elaborate pillow sham he sent her, lost for more than 70 years, has finally come home, just in time for Mother's Day.
The sham, emblazoned with the word "Mother" and sent in 1942 by Dominic O'Gara from his Army base in California to his mother in the small Massachusetts town of Millville, was discovered last month by a town native on eBay.
The hope now is to put the sham on display in the town's senior center, just yards from the house where the O'Gara family once lived.
"To me, it's come back to where it belongs," said Margaret Carroll, chairwoman of the town Historical Commission. "It's as close to Mrs. O'Gara as it can get."
Donald Lamoureux, who lives in Cumberland, Rhode Island, but who grew up in Millville, spotted an envelope for sale on eBay, and even though he had no idea what was inside, he knew he had to have it when he saw the date and the Millville address. He paid $5 for it.

He was stunned when he looked inside.
"There was this pillow sham that had been sealed away for 73 years, and it looked brand new," he said.
Although it had deep creases from being folded for decades, it wasn't frayed, stained or faded.
The white pillow cover has a blue fringe, and in addition to the word "Mother" in blue, is decorated with red roses with green stems, and the words "Camp McQuaide, Calif.," where O'Gara was stationed.
It also has this famous poem, written by lyricist Howard Johnson:

"It was very touching," Lamoureux said.
Millville, about 40 miles southwest of Boston, had a population of about 1,800 in the 1940s. Even these days, it holds only about 3,200 people.
"My grandfather (Rodrique "Pete" Lamoureux) was a World War II veteran, and Millville is such a small town, I just knew they had to have known each other," he said. "I felt this instant connection."
Where the pillow sham has been the past 70-plus years is a mystery. The 6-cent airmail stamp on the envelope was canceled, indicating it had been delivered. But the cover appeared pristine. O'Gara's mother, Catherine, died in 1956.
Lamoureux bought it from a Rhode Island man who runs a collectibles shop and found the envelope in a box of junk acquired from an anonymous seller.
Of course, Lamoureux wanted to return the pillow cover to O'Gara's family, but he couldn't find any living relatives.
He found that O'Gara, the son of Irish immigrants, was an artilleryman who served in Italy in World War II, then lived for years in the nearby town of Milford before dying in 1998. His wife died in 1974.
Lamoureux turned to his own parents, Donald and Diane Lamoureux, and their friends in Millville, including Carroll and Council on Aging member Ellen Ethier Bowen, who both remembered the O'Gara family. But even Carroll, who has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of town history, came up empty.
The group discussed it and came up with the idea of framing the pillow sham and envelope and hanging them in the senior center. The building is a short walk from the O'Garas' former home in a section of town known as Banigan City, named for the former president of a now-closed rubber manufacturing plant who built the homes for his workers.
Bowen hopes to bring the proposal to the full Council on Aging. It would be perfect if the pillow sham could be hung by Memorial Day, she said.
"This whole story just tugs at your heartstrings," she said.

Feds Spent Two Years Deciphering Lyrics to ‘Louie Louie,’ Failed to Realize Copyright Office Already Had Them!!!

In what has to be one of the more fascinating stories of government incompetence, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, along with the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission spent an incredible two years investigating the lyrics to the popular 60s song “Louie Louie,” only to realize they already had them.

Documents reveal the FBI launched the investigation in 1964 after parents began complaining that the song’s lyrics contained “pornographic or obscene materials.”
Apparently kids at a junior high school were passing around notes with what they believed to be the lyrics, since no one could understand the words to the song.
One mother, whose daughter bought the banned album, said of the interpretations: “The lyrics are so filthy that I can-not enclose them in this letter.”

The complaints set off a chain reaction that took up a ton of agents and hundreds of man-hours across multiple agencies, even utilizing an FBI crime laboratory.
Evidenced by the documents, federal agents listened to the song forwards and backwards numerous times “at various speeds but none of the speeds assisted in determining the words of the song on the record.”
Interestingly, the version of “Louie Louie” that was popularized by The Kingsmen was actually a cover, previously recorded by Richard Berry and subsequently by other bands, meaning the FBI could have actually looked at those versions to find out the lyrics.
The documents also reveal it was almost two years before someone realized the copyright office probably had the original lyrics on file.
The investigation ultimately concluded the song’s lyrics contained absolutely no vulgarities.
Producer Eric Predohl, who’s making a documentary on the song and its controversy, says the FBI exhausted nearly every method of investigation, yet failed to question the man who sang the lyrics, Kingsmen singer Jack Ely, who died recently.
In a hilarious twist pointed out by TechDirt’s Mike Masnick, the feds still failed to discover an obscenity that actually appeared in the song not uttered by Ely, but the band’s drummer.

Oh, and as a general postscript, for all the hand wringing about possible obscenities in the song… there actually is one. Just not in the lyrics. At 54 seconds into the song, the drummer Lynn Easton actually fumbled his drumsticks banging them together and yells out “fuck.” The FBI never caught on to that, but you can actually hear it if you listen…

Echoes of the past as Moscow's Victory Day parade stirs memories of a previous anti-American alliance

At first sight, things look very different now. When President Xi Jinping of China took pride of place next to Vladimir Putin of Russia on Saturday, they looked like any other modern world leaders: pragmatic men-in-suits, full of smiles, temporary possessors of power rather than dictators-for-life.

Back in 1949, when Chairman Mao Tse-tung paid his first visit to Moscow to celebrate Comrade Joseph Stalin's 70th Birthday, it was a paean of old-school Communism.

Children in Young Pioneer uniforms paraded through the Bolshoi Opera House telling of their ambition to become tractor drivers. Mao wore a "Mao suit" and Stalin military uniform. Both men looked grumpy.

But the two events, six decades apart, have a clear parallel. Once again, the Russia-China axis is the main threat to the West's vision of peaceful and prosperous international relations.

The line-up of leaders alongside the two men was a walking representation of a new anti-American alliance that has formed bit by bit since the invasion of Iraq demonstrated the frightening ease with which Washington could destroy hostile leaders far away.
Alongside Mr Xi were Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Raúl Castro of Cuba, Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela: standouts against what Mr Putin called a unipolar world, his code phrase for the spread of western-style democracy.

In itself, there isn't much new to this. China has been railing against a "unipolar world" for a decade. Mr Putin and his allies all have their reasons for disliking the West's tendency to set a high store on open elections, a free press and "cooperative" foreign policies.
What is stark is that Russia and China are now openly stating their intention to stand together to lead such an alliance.
The history is a patchy one. In 1949, Mao felt snubbed by Stalin, who regarded him as just another leader of a Soviet-backed Communist satellite rather than an equal.
Mao's subsequent falling-out with Stalin's successors led to the US-China rapprochement following President Richard Nixon's visit to Beijing in 1972. The new détente helped defeat the Soviet Union in the Cold War.

Twenty years ago, when both Presidents Bill Clinton and Jiang Zemin of China stood alongside Boris Yeltsin at the 1995 Moscow Victory Day parade, the power relations were self-evident.
A self-confident America knew that Russia was no longer a threat, while China was dependent for its economic growth on American spending power and investment.
Yesterday in Moscow there was no America – something Washington may come to regret – and there was no doubt whose smile was most confident.
Mr Xi finds himself in a diplomatic sweet spot. It is Mr Putin who gets the flak for standing up to NATO in Ukraine, for supporting the Assad regime in Syria, for threatening to sell air defense systems to Iran.

But it is China who is the ultimate winner, as America's attention is diverted from Beijing's expansion across the South China Sea.
China is openly developing a naval strategy aimed at challenging American dominance of the western Pacific, including in the waters around Japan and Taiwan.
Unlike Chairman Mao, Mr Xi is happy to be seen to play second fiddle on the podium in Moscow. With China now the rising power, he has no doubt as to where the balance of power will lie between China and Russia in years to come. Shows of Russian strength like yesterday's serve his interests, as much as Mr Putin's.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Death of the Republic

The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government.    — Article IV, Section 4, US Constitution

A republican form of government is one in which power resides in elected officials representing the citizens, and government leaders exercise power according to the rule of law. In The Federalist Papers, James Madison defined a republic as “a government which derives all its powers directly or indirectly from the great body of the people . . . .”
On April 22, 2015, the Senate Finance Committee approved a bill to fast-track the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a massive trade agreement that would override our republican form of government and hand judicial and legislative authority to a foreign three-person panel of corporate lawyers.
The secretive TPP is an agreement with Mexico, Canada, Japan, Singapore and seven other countries that affects 40% of global markets. Fast-track authority could now go to the full Senate for a vote as early as next week. Fast-track means Congress will be prohibited from amending the trade deal, which will be put to a simple up or down majority vote. Negotiating the TPP in secret and fast-tracking it through Congress is considered necessary to secure its passage, since if the public had time to review its onerous provisions, opposition would mount and defeat it.

Abdicating the Judicial Function to Corporate Lawyers

James Madison wrote in The Federalist Papers:

The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, . . . may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny. . . . “Were the power of judging joined with the legislative, the life and liberty of the subject would be exposed to arbitrary control, for the judge would then be the legislator. . . .”

And that, from what we now know of the TPP’s secret provisions, will be its dire effect.
The most controversial provision of the TPP is the Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) section, which strengthens existing ISDS  procedures. ISDS first appeared in a bilateral trade agreement in 1959. According to The Economist, ISDS gives foreign firms a special right to apply to a secretive tribunal of highly paid corporate lawyers for compensation whenever the government passes a law to do things that hurt corporate profits — such things as discouraging smoking, protecting the environment or preventing a nuclear catastrophe.
Arbitrators are paid $600-700 an hour, giving them little incentive to dismiss cases; and the secretive nature of the arbitration process and the lack of any requirement to consider precedent gives wide scope for creative judgments.
To date, the highest ISDS award has been for $2.3 billion to Occidental Oil Company against the government of Ecuador over its termination of an oil-concession contract, this although the termination was apparently legal. Still in arbitration is a demand by Vattenfall, a Swedish utility that operates two nuclear plants in Germany, for compensation of €3.7 billion ($4.7 billion) under the ISDS clause of a treaty on energy investments, after the German government decided to shut down its nuclear power industry following the Fukushima disaster in Japan in 2011.
Under the TPP, however, even larger judgments can be anticipated, since the sort of “investment” it protects includes not just “the commitment of capital or other resources” but “the expectation of gain or profit.” That means the rights of corporations in other countries extend not just to their factories and other “capital” but to the profits they expect to receive there.
In an article posted by Yves Smith, Joe Firestone poses some interesting hypotheticals:
Under the TPP, could the US government be sued and be held liable if it decided to stop issuing Treasury debt and financed deficit spending in some other way (perhaps by quantitative easing or by issuing trillion dollar coins)? Why not, since some private companies would lose profits as a result?
Under the TPP or the TTIP (the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership under negotiation with the European Union), would the Federal Reserve be sued if it failed to bail out banks that were too big to fail?
Firestone notes that under the Netherlands-Czech trade agreement, the Czech Republic was sued in an investor-state dispute for failing to bail out an insolvent bank in which the complainant had an interest. The investor company was awarded $236 million in the dispute settlement. What might the damages be, asks Firestone, if the Fed decided to let the Bank of America fail, and a Saudi-based investment company decided to sue?

Abdicating the Legislative Function to Multinational Corporations

Just the threat of this sort of massive damage award could be enough to block prospective legislation. But the TPP goes further and takes on the legislative function directly, by forbidding specific forms of regulation.
Public Citizen observes that the TPP would provide big banks with a backdoor means of watering down efforts to re-regulate Wall Street, after deregulation triggered the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression:

The TPP would forbid countries from banning particularly risky financial products, such as the toxic derivatives that led to the $183 billion government bailout of AIG. It would prohibit policies to prevent banks from becoming “too big to fail,” and threaten the use of “firewalls” to prevent banks that keep our savings accounts from taking hedge-fund-style bets.
The TPP would also restrict capital controls, an essential policy tool to counter destabilizing flows of speculative money. . . . And the deal would prohibit taxes on Wall Street speculation, such as the proposed Robin Hood Tax that would generate billions of dollars’ worth of revenue for social, health, or environmental causes.

Clauses on dispute settlement in earlier free trade agreements have been invoked to challenge efforts to regulate big business. The fossil fuel industry is seeking to overturn Quebec’s ban on the ecologically destructive practice of fracking. Veolia, the French behemoth known for building a tram network to serve Israeli settlements in occupied East Jerusalem, is contesting increases in Egypt’s minimum wage. The tobacco maker Philip Morris is suing against anti-smoking initiatives in Uruguay and Australia.
The TPP would empower not just foreign manufacturers but foreign financial firms to attack financial policies in foreign tribunals, demanding taxpayer compensation for regulations that they claim frustrate their expectations and inhibit their profits.

Preempting Government Sovereignty

What is the justification for this encroachment on the sovereign rights of government? Allegedly, ISDS is necessary in order to increase foreign investment. But as noted in The Economist, investors can protect themselves by purchasing political-risk insurance. Moreover, Brazil continues to receive sizable foreign investment despite its long-standing refusal to sign any treaty with an ISDS mechanism. Other countries are beginning to follow Brazil’s lead.
In an April 22nd report from the Center for Economic and Policy Research, gains from multilateral trade liberalization were shown to be very small, equal to only about 0.014% of consumption, or about $.43 per person per month. And that assumes that any benefits are distributed uniformly across the economic spectrum. In fact, transnational corporations get the bulk of the benefits, at the expense of most of the world’s population.
Something else besides attracting investment money and encouraging foreign trade seems to be going on. The TPP would destroy our republican form of government under the rule of law, by elevating the rights of investors – also called the rights of “capital” – above the rights of the citizens. That means that TPP is blatantly unconstitutional. But as Joe Firestone observes, neo-liberalism and corporate contributions seem to have blinded the deal’s proponents so much that they cannot see they are selling out the sovereignty of the United States to foreign and multinational corporations.
