'Disarm the Police' protesters set fire to flags as part of demonstration stunt - and need to be saved by the NYPD when a group of angry bikers show up

Anti-NYPD group Disarm the Police staged a flag-burning protest on Wednesday night for what they claimed was a stand against the Charleston church massacre - but the activists had to be rescued by none other than New York's finest.

The scene at Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn descended into madness when the fiery stunt was crashed by a group of bikers opposing the flags being burned.

Disarm the Police had announced on their Facebook page that they planned to light up both American and Confederate flags - saying they both 'symbols of oppression' - with over 350 people responding as attending.

However 40 members of the Hallowed Sons Motorcycle Club turned up at the scene about 8 pm to make sure no more flags were burned.

NYPD officers who were at the scene in front of the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument - a memorial to the more than 11,500 American prisoners of war who died in captivity aboard British prison ships during the Revolutionary War - as a precaution then had to step in to make sure no fights broke out.

According to the bikers, the protesters needed that protection.

'They took off like little b----es,' said one biker told The New York Post.

'They lit the f---ing flag and took off running once they got slapped once or twice.' 

But it wasn't just the bikers that turned out opposing the Disarm the Police protest.

Some pro-flag demonstrators also stepped in.

John Carroll, of Ridgewood, was booed by the crowd as he went in and took one of the flags that was left on the ground to burn. 

'If you're going to burn the American flag, you're going to run the risk of running into people like me,' Carroll told NBC New York.

'I will stand by this flag all the time.'

Diane Atkins added: 'We believe in what the United States of America stands for, and the flag that people have died to protect it.'

State senator Marty Golden, a Republican from Brooklyn, told NBC the event was 'wrong'.

'It's a wrong message to send to our children, wrong message to send to our communities,' he said.

'Just plain wrong.'

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams said that Disarm the Police had taken the wrong route, especially since the protest was meant to be about the Charleston church massacre, one of the worst hate crime in recent American history.

'I am sympathetic to those protesting institutional racism in our society, but burning the American flag is a fringe act that will do nothing to combat the challenges we face,' Adams said.

Disarm the Police hit back on their Facebook page, saying the flags are nothing but 'a piece of cloth'.

'We find it a sign of the times that people can care so much about a piece of cloth, while at the same time be so quiet about black churches being burned all over the country.

'We do not believe the ideals of America are anything to be revered.'

Children as young as 12 can now use so-called tap-and-pay wristbands to make instant purchases.

The hi-tech Barclaycard bPay wristbands – as well as key fobs and stickers – will go on sale from Wednesday.

The technology works like contactless credit or debit cards, allowing people to buy goods by simply placing their device against a card reader at the till.

The hi-tech Barclaycard bPay wristbands – as well as key fobs and stickers – will go on sale from Wednesday 

Users can only spend up to £20 a time, rising to £30 from September in line with changes to contactless card limits.

Children can link the devices to their own bank account or that of their parents. 

They must be topped up like a pay-as-you-go phone, but can be set to automatically top up from someone’s bank account if they fall below a certain limit.

Top-ups can also be capped so parents can control their children’s spending.

The devices will be available to anyone with a Visa or MasterCard debit or credit card, not just Barclaycard customers, and can be used at more than 300,000 places in Britain that take contactless payments.

WASHINGTON –  'President' Obama unveiled a long-awaited plan to drastically expand the number of people eligible for overtime pay, in a move that he said would ensure "hard work is rewarded" -- but that critics warn could hurt job growth at a fragile time. 
Under the proposal unveiled late Monday, salaried workers who earn nearly $1,000 per week would become eligible for overtime pay. 
The rule from the Labor Department would more than double the threshold at which employers can avoid paying overtime, from the current $455 a week to $970 a week by next year. That would mean salaried employees earning less than $50,440 a year would be assured overtime if they work more than 40 hours per week, up from the current $23,660 a year. 
"We've got to keep making sure hard work is rewarded," Obama wrote in an op-ed in The Huffington Post. "That's how America should do business. In this country, a hard day's work deserves a fair day's pay." 
Although the Labor Department's estimates suggest the proposal would raise wages for 5 million people, other estimates are far higher. The Economic Policy Institute, a liberal think tank, recently estimated that a threshold of $984 a week would cover 15 million people. 
"This is by definition middle-class people. This reverses decades of neglect," said EPI President Larry Mishel. 

Under the current threshold, only about 8 percent of salaried workers are eligible for 11/2 times their regular pay when they work overtime. The EPI estimates that doubling the salary level would make up to 40 percent of salaried workers eligible. 
Yet many Republicans have opposed Obama's plans to increase the threshold, arguing that doing so would discourage companies from creating jobs and dampen economic growth. Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, who chairs the Senate's labor panel, has derided the idea as designed "to make it as unappealing as possible" for companies to create jobs. 
To keep up with future inflation and wage growth, the proposal will peg the salary threshold at the 40th percentile of income, individuals familiar with the plan said. 
The president was to promote the proposal during a visit Thursday to La Crosse, Wisconsin. 
Obama's proposal aims to narrow a loophole that the president has long said some employers exploit to avoid paying overtime. 
Employees who make above the salary threshold can be denied overtime if they are deemed managers. Some work grueling schedules at fast food chains and retail stores, but with no overtime eligibility, their pay may be lower per hour than many workers they supervise. 
The existing salary cap, established in 2004 under President George W. Bush, has been eroded by inflation. Obama has long charged that the level is too low and undercuts the intent of the overtime law. 
The proposed changes will be open for public comment and could take months to finalize. They can be enacted through regulation, without approval by the Republican-led Congress. 
Obama, in his op-ed, argued the exemption was intended for highly paid, white-collar employees but now punished lower-income workers because the government has failed to update the regulations. 
The beneficiaries would be people like Brittany Swa, 30, a former manager of a Chipotle restaurant in Denver. As a management trainee, she started as an entry-level crew member in March 2010. After several months she began working as an "apprentice," which required a minimum 50-hour work week. 
Yet her duties changed little. She had a key to the shop and could make bank deposits, but otherwise spent nearly all her time preparing orders and working the cash register. She frequently worked 60 hours a week but didn't get overtime because she earned $36,000. 
The grueling hours continued after she was promoted to store manager in October 2010. She left two years later and has joined a class-action lawsuit against Chipotle, charging that apprentices shouldn't be classified as managers exempt from overtime. A spokesman for Chipotle declined to comment on the case.

LONDON – The British government is urging school leaders to use their “common law powers” to search student lunches and potentially confiscate any items they deem “unhealthy or inappropriate.”

Education minister Lord Nash tells Express, “Schools have common law powers to search pupils, with their consent, for items.

“There is nothing to prevent schools from having a policy of inspecting lunch boxes for food items that are prohibited under their school food policies.

“A member of staff may confiscate, keep or destroy such items found as a result of the search if it is reasonable to do so in the circumstances.”

The government’s foray into lunch inspections began when Cherry Tree Primary School in Colchester banned a Peperami sausage snack and scotch eggs from a six-year-old girl’s lunch.

Manchester’s Manley Park Primary School seized cereal bars from lunches, according to the Huffington Post.

“Government should get out of people’s lunchboxes and focus on trying to fix the big things like immigration and the deficit,” Ukip member Douglas Carswell says.

Iain Austin, a Labour MP, adds: “With Britain tumbling down the international league tables and with a generation entering the work force with less literacy and numeracy than the generation retiring, you would have thought that teachers might have better things to do than rummaging through children’s crisps and fruit.”

There have been glimpses of such policies in the U.S.

A teacher at an Aurora, Colorado school blocked a preschool girl from eating Oreo cookies in her home-packed lunch.

They were accompanied by a ham and cheese sandwich and string cheese.

When the girl returned home from school, the cookies were still in her lunchbox, along with a note:

“Dear Parents, it is very important that all students have a nutritious lunch. This is a public school setting and all children are required to have a fruit, a vegetable and a heavy snack from home, along with a milk. If they have potatoes, the child will also need bread to go along with it. Lunchables, chips, fruit snacks, and peanut butter are not considered to be a healthy snack. This is a very important part of our program and we need everyone’s participation.”

Pearson’s daughter says her teacher didn’t allow her to eat the cookies during lunch, because “they don’t have enough nutritional value,” according to 9 News.

“What the school thinks is healthy for her is not what I think is healthy for her,” the mother says. “That’s between me and her and our doctor – not the school.”

With Americans set to celebrate Independence Day this weekend, Mark Dice illustrated that many beachgoers in San Diego don’t even know when the Declaration of Independence was signed or what the 4th of July even represents.

When asked, “What country famously broke away from England to start their own country in the late 1700’s,” one man responded, “I have no idea man, I don’t know.”

Asked what Americans were celebrating on the 4th of July, another woman said that Independence Day was to recognize “the day that we overtook the south….it’s our independence….from the south,” a reference to the civil war which took place almost a hundred years later.

Another woman was also almost a century out of date with her knowledge, guessing that Abraham Lincoln signed the Declaration of Independence. She then topped her ignorance again by claiming that this occurred in 1964.

When a man is asked, “What country did we declare our independence from, his wife responds, “California,” before the man says, “I don’t know,” but still assures Dice that he will be celebrating the occasion anyway.

Yet another woman was unable to name one of the founding fathers of America, while a man walked away as soon as he heard the question.

It was left to a man on vacation from Italy to finally answer correctly that America celebrated its independence from Britain in 1776.

The video correlates with numerous polls that illustrate the staggering level of ignorance many Americans have when it comes to the founding of their own country.

A 2011 Maris poll found that, “Only 58 percent of residents know that the United States declared its independence in 1776.” Around a quarter of U.S. citizens have no idea who America declared its independence from.

The numbers are even more depressing when it comes to America’s youth. 14 per cent of teens think that the U.S. declared independence from France, while another 5 per cent thought it was Canada.

Going on the anecdotal evidence of this video, if anything those figures aren’t likely to have improved over the last four years.
