Avoid the #1 cause of lifelong disability
Hi John
I remember back when I was a little girl, the elderly lady that lived next
door to us (Annie) suffered a
stroke.
I was clueless...and scared. All I knew was that an ambulance came and
took her away, she was in the hospital for a long time, and when she finally
came home, she couldn't walk or talk right.
My mother explained that Annie had a stroke, and when I asked what that was,
she said it's something that happens to really old people.
Although that eased my 5 year-old mind at the time, sadly nowadays nothing
could be farther from the truth.
Strokes DON'T just strike the elderly--as a matter of fact,
1 out of
every 4 strokes is suffered by children or adults UNDER age 65!
And those numbers in the
younger group continue to
rise.
Here is the scoop on this condition that is currently the
number 4 cause
of death in the US for ALL ages, as well as the
number 1 cause of
lifelong disability.
The anatomy of a stroke
Simply put, a stroke is when the blood supply to your brain is
interrupted.
There are 2 different ways this can happen:
1. Ischemic stroke
With an
ischemic stroke, the oxygen-rich blood supply to part of your
brain is reduced or cut off. This is the more common type of stroke and
typically results from
atherosclerosis (clogged arteries).
2. Hemorrhagic stroke
With this type of stroke, there is
bleeding in the brain, usually as
a result of an injury or trauma. When blood is spilling out of a vessel
in the brain, your brain cells cannot get enough for their needs.
In either case, after a mere
4 minutes without an adequate supply of
blood and oxygen, your brain cells become damaged and begin to die.
When this is happening, it sounds the alarm for your body to try to restore
blood and oxygen to the brain by enlarging other arteries near the area.
But if that doesn't happen quickly enough or the "emergency" blood
supply is not adequate,
permanent brain damage usually occurs.
When your brain cells become damaged or die, the body parts that are
controlled
by those cells lose their ability to function properly.
This loss of function can range from mild to severe and temporary to
permanent. It depends on where and how much of your brain is damaged and
how fast the blood supply is returned to the affected cells.
They're getting younger and
younger
As I mentioned above, this isn't something that happens to just the elderly
anymore and the statistics
prove it.
Researchers analyzed data from the
Nationwide Inpatient Sample of the Healthcare
and Utilization Project and extracted the stats on people hospitalized for
stroke.
Between 1995 and 2008, they found that the number of YOUNG adults ages 15-44
suffering strokes increased by more than
33 percent!
And at ANY age, if you are lucky enough to survive a stroke, the resulting
loss of functioning can be
devastating and cause permanent
mental or
physical disability.
About half of all people who have a stroke will have some long-term problems
with talking, understanding, and decision-making. They also may have changes in
behavior that affect their relationships with family and friends.
Additional long-term complications of a stroke can include
depression and
pneumonia.
The good news--a stroke-free
existence
The good news here is that experts estimate that 80% (8 out of 10) of
strokes can be
PREVENTED.
Here are the most important yet safe, natural measures you can take to keep
the odds on your side and help keep strokes far away from you:
1. Quit smoking
Smoking is the
#1 most controllable risk factor for stroke, and is
directly
responsible for a higher proportion of strokes in young adults.
And smokers of ALL ages have a
DOUBLE risk of ischemic stroke
compared to nonsmokers.
2. Avoid recreational
drugs & steroids
Use of illicit drugs such as cocaine and crack cocaine, marijuana,
amphetamines and heroin, as well as illegal anabolic steroids used to increase
muscle mass ALL increase your risk of stroke.
3. Exercise regularly
Exercise helps ALL of your cells and organ systems to work properly and
encourages the elimination of dangerous toxins--all of which can improve the
health of your blood vessels and prevent blockages.
Plus exercise helps naturally lower
blood pressure, which is another
major risk factor for stroke.
4. Have a healthy diet of
real foods
Having a healthy diet of real foods is arguably the biggest bang for your
buck in terms of stroke prevention.
Just see what it can do for you:
- Your body is better able to get the
nourishment from your foods that it needs for all of your cells--including
your precious brain cells.
- Wastes and toxins can be more efficiently
eliminated, so they are less likely to gum up your blood and contribute to
artery blockages.
- You can more easily maintain a healthy
bodyweight. Note that obesity is another risk factor for
stroke.
- Less reliance on processed foods and refined
carbs means less chance of developing Type 2 diabetes (which is yet
another stroke risk factor).
Real foods include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy and eggs
(preferably organic), meats from grass-fed animals, wild-caught fish and good
fats (including real butter--not margarine--as well as olive oil, avocado and
nuts).
5. Encourage sound
digestion
This goes hand in hand with number 4--in addition to having a healthy diet,
sound digestion is an absolute MUST.
Here's why:
Your liver filters out
old, worn-out cholesterol from your
bloodstream. Then it dumps it into bile which is in turn excreted into
your colon to be eliminated with your bowel movements.
This is one way your liver serves as your "
natural statin"
and helps maintain a healthy cholesterol level in your body!
But if your digestion is not efficient, chances are excellent you have
constipation
and/or feces buildup in your colon--both of which make it very likely that
the old cholesterol WON'T get eliminated, but instead get
reabsorbed
into your bloodstream!
From there it can sail through your arteries and help contribute to
blockages...and
you know what can happen after that.

The little guys are a big
help too
Efficient digestion is also dependent on how healthy your
gut flora
is.
You see, your friendly flora helps in the digestive process by breaking down
certain
starches and fibers, plus it also acts like a broom to help
"sweep" wastes (including worn-out cholesterol) out of the colon.

But
unfortunately if you drink soda, eat processed foods or refined carbs, or have
had anything even close to a typical Standard American Diet, chances are
excellent your friendly flora is waving the white flag of defeat and is not
able to do all it can for you.
That's why probiotic supplementation is helpful for SO many people.
Super
Shield multi-strain probiotic formula can help make sure your friendly
flora balance is where it needs to be.

Remember, strokes are NOT something that happens just to the
elderly
anymore.
But when you take safe, smart preventive measures, you can help greatly
reduce YOUR risk of stroke...and many other diseases as well!
To your health,
Sherry Brescia
PS: Susan’s got
the blood pressure of a teenager now and is down 8 pounds to boot!
Dear Sherry,
Thanks for coming up with your Great Taste No
Pain plan as it has really changed my life.
I have always suffered with some kind of
digestive problem or another for as long as I can remember. About 3 years ago
this acid reflux problem started. I was having to take a Gaviscon tablet at
least 3 times a day. I spoke to my doctor about it a couple of times and his
answer was to stick a camera up my bottom. Which I have to tell you was not
very nice and didn't achieve anything.
Then I came across your website. I had already
had a couple of books about food combining way in the back of our book shelf so
I got them out and tried to follow them but frankly I found it a bit much to
take in and I sort of got the hang of it but I was only about 80 percent there.
Then your plan arrived in the post which
explained everything in plain language and the recipes in the cookbook are
great. I've really gotten back into cooking now and my “dragon” pretty much
stays “asleep.”
I've lost 8 pounds, my husband has lost 12
pounds (he's following your plan too) and when I went for my hypertension checkup
last Friday the nurse said she could not believe how much my pressure has
dropped and said I had the blood pressure of a teenager (I'm 53)!
So thanks again.
Susan W.
