Global Internet freedom is slipping away and, though the United States still enjoys relative online freedom, U.S. lawmakers don’t seem all that interested in keeping it that way.
Freedom House’s annual “Freedom of the Net” report was released Wednesday bringing bad news for global Internet free speech and privacy rights. According to the report’s analysis of the online censorship and digital spying policies of 65 governments, global Internet freedom has declined for the fifth year in a row.
The report concluded that in the past year:
Content removals increased:
Authorities in 42 of the 65 countries assessed required private companies or internet users to restrict or delete web content dealing with political, religious, or social issues, up from 37 the previous year.
Arrests and intimidation escalated:
Authorities in 40 of 65 countries imprisoned people for sharing information concerning politics, religion or society through digital networks.
Surveillance laws and technologies multiplied:
Governments in 14 of 65 countries passed new laws to increase surveillance since June 2014 and many more upgraded their surveillance equipment.
Governments undermined encryption, anonymity:
Democracies and authoritarian regimes alike stigmatized encryption as an instrument of terrorism, and many tried to ban or limit tools that protect privacy.
The free speech watchdog said that particularly concerning is a growing trend of governments harassing, intimidating or arresting online content creators as well as the increased Internet surveillance.
“Now that we’re seeing governments target content at the source, it’s really concerning; both in the sense that that content is removed forever, and also the pressure they bring with that — on social media companies, on individuals,” Laura Reed, a research analyst for the Freedom on the Net project, told Voice of America.
Compared to many of its international peers, the U.S. still earned high marks from the report for Internet freedom. But yesterday’s Senate passage of the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (CISA), a bill that encourages tech companies to hand over user info to the government without judicial oversight, poses a major threat to U.S. citizens’ digital freedom.
As the “Freedom of the Net” report, compiled before the Senate decision, noted:
Civil liberties advocates have heavily criticized the bill, in particular contending that it authorizes too much information sharing between companies and the government, allows companies to monitor all of their users’ activities and communications, does not adequately restrict use of CISA-derived information, has poor liability protections for consumers, and authorizes companies to employ potentially dangerous counter-measures when hacked.
The report also said that Americans should be concerned about law enforcement officials’ ongoing crusade to thwart encryption technologies that are making personal digital content more secure than ever before.

Following major product announcements by Apple and Google in September 2014, a debate emerged between law enforcement officials, technology experts and privacy advocates about whether companies should be allowed to market products with strong encryption that do not preserve the government’s ability to access decrypted versions of those encrypted communications.
High-ranking officials including the FBI Director, the Attorney General, and the Director of the NSA have called on technology companies to find a technical solution to the problem, threatening to seek congressional action if necessary.

Journalists for online publications were harassed and temporarily detained during demonstrations in Ferguson, Missouri, where people gathered to protest police violence against the black community in the United States.

For 21 years, a wounded veteran who served with the 101st Airborne fought for his nation. On Tuesday, in an emotionally charged face-to-face meeting, Donald Trump promised to take this veteran’s side in the ex-soldier’s current battlefield: the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Trump was answering questions at a Sioux City, Iowa, campaign stop when a wounded veteran named Todd was given the opportunity to speak. “These are our greatest people. The wounded warriors. These are the greatest. The best,” Trump said before leaving his podium to greet the man and his family.
“With the current administration, warrior care is lacking to say the least…especially post-service,” Todd said to Trump, noting that he did not work and his wife, April, was his caregiver.
“What will the Trump administration do better than the Obama administration?”
“Is the VA not doing the job?” Trump asked.
April explained that Todd was supposed to enroll in a new VA program, but can’t get an appointment. Trump acted decisively. He told Todd and his wife to put their information on a card and give it to him so he could champion their cause.
“I am going to put pressure on the VA like you won’t believe,” Trump said to major applause from the crowd. “Let’s see if we can get this.”
“As president, I can guarantee it. As Trump I can say, ‘I’ll probably be able to pull it off anyway.'” he told the family as the crowd around him cheered. “Because they know it won’t stop. It’ll be easier to take Todd and just say ‘Look, Todd, we’re gonna work with you.”
Trump then discussed the VA’s “terrible” shortcomings. “The waits now are worse than they’ve ever been. Thousands of people dying, waiting for a doctor,” he said.
To fix the situation, Trump said he would allow veterans in need of care to receive treatment at any local hospital, which Trump said would cost less and improve the quality of care.
“We’re going to take care of our vets,” he told the crowd. “We’re going to take care of the VA.”

The Plan for a Greater Israel Unveiled and Obliterated Retired four-star General Wesley Clark has given a number of interviews over the years in which he has revealed a covert plan whereby the “US will attack 7 countries In 5 years”. The context was always the Middle East and the seven countries were “Iraq, and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and, finishing off, Iran.” In each case Clark appears to be unaware that he was unwittingly exposing the essence of a clandestine scheme known in some circles as the Greater Israel project.
Gen. Clark has performed a great service to the nation, and the world, by disclosing this crucial insider info. His public sharing of this critical piece of the Mideast puzzle has probably had an adverse effect on his post military career. Unfortunately, Clark’s forced retirement by the U.S. Army has likely made it much more difficult to acquire similar types of extremely valuable intelligence.

Gross Miscalculation By The Neocons About Russia’s Non-Intercession
The neocon strategy for acheiving total Mideast domination hinged upon one key premise. They wrongfully assumed that Russia would never permit its military to become embroiled in wars in the Middle East. And, that the Kremlin would be extra special careful not to incite Islamic jihadism as a direct result of any kind of military involvement in that region.
The Russian Motherland is an enormous geographic area and cost effectively defending it borders against ‘Muslim’ terrorists is virtually impossible. Chechnya was a graphic example of the Western powers using mercenary proxies from Muslim and Arab nations to harass Russia at its fringes.
There are a couple of more critical quotes excerpted below from General Clark’s talks which can also be heard in the video posted below. This particular interview captures the essence of Israel’s master plan to essentially conquer the whole Middle East. Clark is basically parroting previous neocon DOD Secretaries, Deputy Secretaries and Under Secretaries who carelessly disclosed this ongoing neocon conspiracy to him.
“But one thing we did learn, he said, we learned that we can use our military in the region — in the Middle East — and the Soviets won’t stop us.” “We’ve got about five or ten years to clean up those old Soviet client regimes – Syria, Iran, Iraq, before the next great superpower comes on to challenge us.” (Source: US will attack 7 countries in 5 years)
Although General Clark refers to the Mideast conquest by the U.S. military, it ought to be understood that these illicit wars of aggression have been advanced in the interest of establishing a Greater Israel. In other words much of U.S. foreign policy revolves around securing Israel’s domination of the Middle East.
The preceding statements by General Clark specifically reflect information given to him by Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz (who served under George W. Bush) at the Pentagon after 9/11. Wolfowitz was one of the key architects of America’s declared War on Terror, and especially of the wars waged against Afghanistan and Iraq.
Both of these quotes illustrate the fateful under estimation by the neocons of Russian resolve and purpose. They especially represent the extent to which the AAA wrongly assessed the Kremlim’s determination to project military power in the defense of the powerless peoples of Syria, and particulalry the defenseless Christian communities.
Here is the quote again as the profound neocon faux pas is well worth repeating since it is the very basis of their Greater Israel debacle. The obvious question is how did they get it so very wrong? Because … they are still steeped in Cold War mentality. Their premise was likely accurate when assessing the Old Guard reactions of the Soviet Union. However, President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Defense Sergey Shoygu, et al. possess a consciousness that is far removed from the Soviet Cold Warriors of yesteryear.

Russia’s Moral Ascendancy And Military Prowess Are Now Unquestioned
Putin’s Russia has now shown itself to be the savior of Christians living in the Middle East. Putin has also proven to be a loyal friend of President Bashar al-Assad. President Putins’s peace initiative in Syria in 2013 also serves as a testament to this. Only Russia possessed the necessary military strength and nuclear weapon deterrence to confront the AAA in Syria. And confront them they did by way of a crushing aerial blitzkrieg.
“Strategic Russian airstrikes and surgically precise cruise missile attacks have systematically destroyed and/or degraded ISIS military installations, hidden arsenals, camouflaged depots, supply lines and other overland attack routes. The Islamic State cannot even believe what hit them. In so doing Russia has forever exposed the crazy neocon and Zionist conspiracy to rule the Mideast through an ever-evolving Greater Israel. Were it not for Russia, the Middle East would have already been completely taken over by Zionist zealots in the form of so many terrorist groups secretly supported by Israel.
Likewise, Russia’s support of the Iranian government has provided a countervailing force to those Arab Sunni states that would like to topple every Shiite government throughout the region. The wars and conflicts between Shiites and Sunnis are being relentlessly exacerbated by the AAA client states. Israel, in particular, has once again thrown fuel on this raging fire so that it will surely turn into a regional conflagration. The following account of Israel’s perfidy is quite shocking for both its savagery and inconceivable offense to the most sacred of Islamic religious traditions.
Because of egregious assaults like these, it is quite likely that the whole Middle East may explode into a modern-day version of Armageddon. Much of the region has already been transformed into a dystopian, post-apocalyptic wasteland by the AAA and its many mercenary proxies and controlled terrorist groups.
Truly, the exceedingly misguided Zio-Anglo-American strategy to fabricate a Greater Israel has certainly set the world up for the Great Tribulation.

Putin’s Russia Has Forever Outed The Greater Israel Conspiracy
Now that this cat is out of the bag it can never be put back in. No matter how Israel tries to spin its nefarious plot to take over the Middle East, their creation and covert support of ISIS has been revealed for all to see.
Russia’s bombing of ISIL back into the Stone Age has shown just how fraudulent the US-led coalition has been since its very inception. The American and French airstrikes never even touched the IS military positions over many months of sorties.
Israel did not even feel it was necessary to provide the fake coalition with contrived cover until the Russian bombardment recently commenced. Only then did the Israeli government declare the first ISIS terror cell was found within Israel’s borders. That’s how fully confident the Zio-Anglo-American co-conspirators were that Russia would stay safely on the sidelines. This highly consequential and “gross miscalculation” has irreparably damaged their entire Greater Israel blueprint and consigned it to the trash bin of history.
Only because of Russian airstrikes and cruise missile attacks in Syria was the fraudulent AAA fiasco of fake military operations against the ISIS terror groups laid bare. Clearly, the Anglo-American Axis (see Glossary below) got caught with it pants down is a way never seen before. Russian bombardiers still have the US-led coalition trousers pulled down to their ankles by virtue of their sweeping military successes throughout the northern Levant region. One wonders just how long the ‘coalition of the frauds’ will tolerate such humiliating exposure.
Conclusion
Putin’s Russia has certainly arrived in the nick of time in Syria. Hopefully, the Russians will finish off the AAA-sponsored terrorist groups throughout Iraq, and beyond. Only by “going ballistic” has Putin been able to fight fire with a much bigger fire, as in massive firepower. There are times when terrorism must be met with a force so fierce and formidable that it will never rear its ugly head again.
The back story of Syria’s occupation by Western-backed terrorists is an extremely interesting one. In the person of Bashar al-Assad has Putin placed much confidence and trust. He did this for very good reason. Putin knew the Syrian people would stand by their trustworthy and legitimate president. Had this not been the case Assad’s government would have been overrun years ago. There is perhaps no better example on planet Earth for how to respond to a bully in your neighborhood than the Russian’s ongoing “shock and awe” campaign against ISIS. Russia is serving as a glowing example regarding how to best respond to any incorrigible and violent bully. The world has been terrorized long enough by these bad actors. Perhaps it is now time to rid the planet of all of these intractable characters who are so hellbent on destroying the global village.
If ever there was a righteous leader and strong nation which was capable of such a courageous feat, Putin’s Russia is it.
Many have had a hard time embracing President Vladimir Putin’s benevolent role within the world community of nations. They now point to his use of overwhelming force against ISIS as an example of his 'war mongering'. There are multiple reasons why this is the case ranging from improper food management to unhygienic cooking practices, from moldy refrigerators to contaminated countertops, from unhealthy food combinations to cooking old dead foods, from salmonella in the poultry products to E. coli in the beef products.
With the introduction of the microwave oven into virtually every home in America, the kichen can now be considered a certified crime scene. Yes, they’re that bad … and much worse than most will ever believe, so accustimed are they to nuking their food on a daily basis.
There’s a very good reason why they call it “NUKING”, yes?!

Microwave Ovens: Remove Them From Your Kitchens … NOW ! ! !
Should we end this coaching session right here and now? We’d like to but so many are attached to this little EMR & Microwave outputting beast. Truly, the Microwave Oven has become a permanent fixture in virtually every kitchen in America.
What an unmitigated health disaster this has created! Let’s take a look at the evidence. Not the scientific evidence just yet. The real evidence known as nuked food.
How many times have you gone to a restaurant and been served a nuked ‘baked’ potato? A nuked potato has been cooked by a microwave oven, so why do they still call it baked?! It’s not baked in an oven; it’s micorwaved, which is a vastly different cooking method.
We don’t go to restaurants, and we don’t eat potatoes (they’re nightshades); nevertheless, in years past we have been out and about and have seen and heard about the thing they called a baked potato in many restaurants.
Would you eat that ‘baked’ potato and if so, why would you do such a thing?!?! Can we end this discussion now or must we go on. We might as well open this little pandora’s box all the way since we came this far. Inasmuch as we found a health investigator who has done a great job at assembling some very authoritative evidence against the use of microwaves, we have taken the liberty of quoting her article “Microwaving — Dangers to Your Food and You?” quite liberally. As follows:
“In Dr. Lita Lee’s book, “Health Effects of Microwave Radiation – Microwave Ovens,” and in the March and September 1991 issues of Earthletter, she stated that every microwave oven leaks electro-magnetic radiation, harms food and converts substances cooked in it to dangerous organ-toxic and carcinogenic products.
Micro ovens are far more harmful than previously imagined. Listed are the many findings of the German and Russian investigators. Here are just a few:
Cancer Causing Effects — Creation of a ‘binding effect’ to radioactivity in the atmosphere, creation of cancer-causing agents within protein hydrolysate compounds, malfunctions within the lymphatic systems, higher percentage of cancerous cells within the blood serum, cancer-causing free radicals, stomach and intestinal cancerous growths, with a gradual breakdown of the function of the digestive and excretive systems.
Decrease In Food Value — Microwave exposure caused significant decreases in the nutritive value of all foods researched. There was a decrease in bioavailability of B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, essential minerals and lipotropics in all foods, a loss of 60 to 90% of the vital energy field of all tested foods, and a marked acceleration of structural disintegration in all foods.
Biological Effects of Exposure — Breakdown of the human “life-energy field,” degeneration and circuit breakdowns within the front portion of the brain where thought and higher functions reside, loss of balance, long term cumulative loss of vital energy and long-lasting residual effects.
The same author has listed many other very good reasons “to throw out your Microwave oven.“:
1. Continually eating food processed from a microwave oven causes long term, permanent, brain damage by ‘shorting out” electrical impulses in the brain (de-polarizing or de-magnetizing the brain tissue). 2. The human body cannot metabolize (breakdown) the unknown by-products created in microwaved food.
3. Male and female hormone production is shut down and/or altered by continually eating microwaved foods.
4. The effects of microwaved food by-products are residual (long term, permanent) within the human body.
5. Minerals, vitamins, and nutrients of all microwaved food is reduced or altered so that the human body gets little or no benefit, or the human body absorbs altered compounds that cannot be broken down.
6. The minerals in vegetables are altered into cancerous free radicals when cooked in microwave ovens.
7. Microwaved foods cause stomach and intestinal cancerous growths (tumors). This may explain the rapid increased rate of colon cancer in America.
8. The prolonged eating of microwaved foods causes cancerous cells to increase in human blood.
9. Continual ingestion of microwaved food causes immune system deficiencies through lymph gland and serum alterations.

Are you convinced yet?
Clearly the primary explanation for so many people refusing to listen to the voice of reason or the gut feeling of common sense concerning this extremely serious health matter, is the irresistible convenience that comes with using such a beast … 3 times per day, every day of the week, every month of the year, for life. Now that’s a life sentence, if ever we have seen one meted out to oneself!
Is that you? Hopefully not, because the unintended consequences, collateral damage and toxic side effects of microwave usage completely justify its exile to the global trash heap.

“The most controlled (and scary) research was almost suppressed from public knowledge before being published. Two Swiss researchers sequestered subjects under close scrutiny and blood tests were conducted after the subjects randomly ate food that was either microwaved or conventionally cooked. They found all sorts of potentially nasty stuff:
• Blood hemoglobin levels decreased significantly after ingesting microwaved foods, both total levels and the amount contained in each red blood cell.
• White blood cell levels tended to increase for no other reason than foods were microwaved.
• Microwaves altered protein molecules.
• LDL cholesterol (the ‘bad’ type) increased relative to HDL cholesterol (the ‘good’ type).
The researchers were immediately sued by the “Swiss Association of Dealers for Electroapparatuses for Households and Industry,” and one of the authors was convicted by the Swiss Federal Court of “interfering with commerce.” The fine was the equivalent of $65,000.”

“In the journal Pediatrics, Apr. 1992, research appeared that warned that microwaving human milk, even at a low setting, can destroy some of its important disease-fighting capabilities. Pediatrician John A. Kerner, Jr. and his co-workers at Stanford University reported that breast milk that was microwaved lost lysozyme activity, antibodies, and fostered the growth of more potentially pathogenic bacteria. Adverse changes at such low temperatures suggest that microwaving itself may in fact cause some injury to the milk above and beyond the heating.”
And then there’s the problem it causes with vitamin B-12:
“A nutrition book published in 2003 states that for most nutrients, microwave heating minimizes losses compared to traditional cooking methods. Such is not the case for vitamin B-12. Microwave heating inactivates vitamin B-12. To preserve this vitamin, use the oven or stovetop instead of the microwave to cook meats and milk products (major sources of vitamin B-12). Many elderly are at risk of B-12 deficiency and shouldn’t microwave meat, milk, eggs or B-12 fortified foods, unless they only occasionally microwave or are getting B-12 in a supplement or fortified cereal.” {Elizabeth Snyder, MS, RD, nutrition instructor, Southern Adventist University, Collegedale, Tennessee, in Weill Medical College of Cornell University, Food & Fitness Advisor newsletter, Mar. 2003}
“Few people realize that many of the vitamins in food are rapidly being destroyed by cooking. Even fewer know that microwaving destroys vitamins five times more quickly than does regular cooking. After just six minutes of microwaving, nearly half of the vitamin B-12 was destroyed when a Japanese dietitian measured the levels after microwaving.
Vitamin B-12 was singled out for study since it is of vital importance in helping to prevent several major diseases that become more common as we grow older, including arteriosclerosis (cholesterol deposits in arteries), heart attacks and strokes.
It is also now understood that B-12 deficiency is one of several factors that together often cause dementia (such as Alzheimer’s disease) in older people. Since cooking destroys vitamin B-12, and since older people have trouble absorbing it anyway, experts now recommend that adults take a 1 mg (1,000 micrograms) tablet of vitamin B-12 daily. This greatly overcomes the difficulty older people have in absorbing it. Even at this dosage, vitamin B-12 is harmless, inexpensive, and obtainable without a prescription.” {Science News – vol. 153 #7:105, 1998, in Health Gazette, Apr. 1998}
The same author writes the following concerning “Micowave Cooking in Plastic Containers” - “Do not heat food containing fat in a microwave using plastic containers because the combination of fat, high heat and plastics releases dioxins and other toxins into the food and ultimately into your cells. Dioxins are carcinogens and highly toxic.
After researchers studied several commercial plastic containers, compounds such as methylbenzene, ethylbenzene, 1-octene, xylene, styrene and 1,4-dichlorobenzene were found in all of them.
Also, the increased output power of modern microwave ovens can cause overheating.
Although cooking of raw foods in a microwave targets an acceptable end product for touch, taste and smell, the process does not address the microbiological safety of the cooked food.
Microwave ovens from various commercial suppliers were used to cook naturally contaminated whole raw broiler and roaster chickens according to manufacturers’ instructions. Can you believe that so many cavalierly microwave (heat up) their foods and beverages in plastic containers?! As though plastic doesn’t melt or get so hot that it allows for migration of petroleum-based derivatives into the food or beverage contents???
We think that we have provided enough highly credible research for anyone reading this to dispose of their microwave. If you choose to keep it in operation, it may very well significantly contribute to the degradation of your health at the cellular level, tissue level, organ level as well as systemically.
We strongly believe that the rapid increase of so much chronic degenerative disease can be partially attributed to the frequent use of these DANGEROUS devices. They have become so ubiquitous that their detrimental health effects are surely being felt far and wide.
The problem – as always – is that the scientific community has avoided this area of research like the plague. Undertaking such research studies would be the best way to demonstrate the direct correlation between microwave use and various medical makers and health stats.
Whereas GreenMedInfo has provided these excellent research studies, the dearth of such scientific research is clearly due to the many and diverse vested interests who ensure that few will likely ever be undertaken … to the great detriment of both individual and collective health.
In the meantime, you, the cook, and you, the eater, can easily avoid the radiation from the device, as well as the negative consequences of eating microwaved food. We have managed to do so for well over 25 years with virtually no inconvenience. However, we’re not at all shy about asking the waitress to ensure that none of our food will be nuked on that rare occasion that we find ourselves at a restaurant.

Author’s Note: You know, we dealt very little with the EMR and microwave effects in the ambient living environment when these little beasts are turned on and humming. This is likewise a HUGE issue which poses it’s own list of serious health concerns as presented by many researchers. Telling Personal Vignette: The Health Coach once worked for a company in Atlanta, GA in the mid-90s. For almost two straight years the owner of the firm was seen to microwave his lunch (a different frozen dinner every day) every afternoon, without exception. Immediately after eating the ‘meal’, he would go into a coughing fit, each and every day, without exception. Some of us would sit there within earshot listening to the terrible discomfort which he suffered, as endless coughing sounds could be heard through his office door. This happened 5 days a week and gave us much to ponder about what might be causing such an uncontrollable fit of coughing. Needless to say, those of us who were health conscious never went near that microwave. He did pass away shortly thereafter as a result of heart disease, diabetes and other chronic ailments.

We all know that in most public schools in America, talking about religion is now strictly verboten. Those who pushed for this policy have always argued that it would be a violation of the separation of church and state. However, the argument goes both ways. If it’s going to be inappropriate for a teacher to push his or her religion on students in a public school, it should also be wrong for a teacher advocate atheism in the same forum.
One Texas middle school teacher who has yet to be named, is now in hot water for doing just that. According to her students from West Memorial Junior High School, they were given an assignment that challenged their faith. “We were asked to take a poll to say whether God is fact, opinion or a myth and she told anyone who said fact or opinion was wrong and God was only a myth.”
Kids who tried to argue with the teacher were told they would get in trouble, and those who expressed their belief in God for the assignment, were told they would receive a failing grade.
“Another student asked the teacher if we could put what we believe in the paper, and she said we could, but you would fail the paper if you do.”
The teacher’s actions were brought to the attention of the principle by the mother of one of her students, 7th grader Jordan Wooley. The girl has since testified before the school board, who are currently investigating the incident.
The conflict in Syria has put Moscow back on the geopolitical map (so to speak), creating an enormous amount of tension with Washington whose regional allies have been left to look on in horror as Russian airstrikes and an Iranian ground incursion dash hopes of ousting President Bashar al-Assad.
Meanwhile, in The South China Sea, Beijing has built 3,000 acres of new sovereign territory atop reefs in the Spratlys and although the reclamation effort itself isn’t unique, the scope of it most certainly is and Washington’s friends in the South Pacific are crying foul.
Beijing has continually insisted that it doesn’t intend to use the islands as military outposts, but the construction of runways and ports seems to tell a different story and so, Washington felt compelled to check things out over the summer by sending a Poseidon spy plane complete with a CNN crew to the area. Once the PLA spotted the plane the situation escalated quickly with the Chinese Navy telling US pilots to “Go Now!”
After that, an intense war of words developed with Defense Secretary Ash Carter insisting that the US would sail and fly anywhere it pleased and Beijing assuring the US that sailing within 12 nautical miles of the islands would prompt a harsh response from the PLA.
For weeks, the US was rumored to have been planning a freedom of navigation exercise in the Spratlys which, as we’ve pointed out several times this month, amounts to sailing by the islands just to see if China will shoot. Now, according to CNN, Obama has given the green light and the ships may sail within 24 hours:

The US navy is poised to start freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea in a high stakes effort to push back against Chinese territorial claims over artificial islands in the disputed waters.
In a move that will enrage Beijing, the USS Lassen, a guided-missile destroyer, will sail inside the 12-nautical mile zones of two man-made islands — Subi and Mischief reefs — that China has built in the contested Spratly Island chain. A senior US defence official said it would sail through the area in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
China has repeatedly warned that it would not tolerate any effort to violate what it considers its territory. Earlier this month, a senior Chinese naval officer said the People’s Liberation Army would hand a “head-on blow” to any foreign forces that violated Chinese sovereignty. His comments came after the Financial Times reported that the US was poised to launch its operations.
The manoeuvre will mark the first time since 2012 that the US navy has sailed through the 12-nautical mile zone surrounding any islands claimed by China. It is aimed at demonstrating that Washington does not recognise any territorial claims over artificial islands in the South China Sea.
It’s also worth noting that should the US manage to get away with this without sparking a shooting war with the Chinese, it now looks as though Washington is leaning toward making this a regular patrol.
A range of security experts said Washington’s so-called freedom of navigation patrols would have to be regular to be effective, given Chinese ambitions to project power deep into maritime Southeast Asia and beyond.
“This cannot be a one-off,” said Ian Storey, a South China Sea expert at Singapore’s Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.
“The U.S. navy will have to conduct these kinds of patrols on a regular basis to reinforce their message.”
But China would likely resist attempts to make such U.S. actions routine, some said, raising the political and military stakes. China’s navy could for example try to block or attempt to surround U.S. vessels, they said, risking an escalation.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but this borders on the insane. Here we have both Washington and Beijing risking an outright military confrontation over what amount to a couple of sandcastles and while there’s probably some truth to the contention that China has plans for the islands that go beyond growing plants, building lighthouses, and raising pigs, it’s not as though the PLA is going to invade The Philippines so at the end of the day, this looks like another example of what Vladimir Putin recently suggested is evidence that the world is losing its collective mind.
