WARNING TO U.S. MILITARY AND FEDERAL LEOs:  DO NOT FOLLOW ORDERS TO 'WACO' AMMON BUNDY AND THE AMERICAN PATRIOTS, OR RISK CIVIL WAR

De Oppresso Liber?  We Shall See

This is addressed first and foremost to the entire U.S. military, but especially to the military Special Operations Command and community.    

Secondly, it is addressed to federal LEOs (Federal Law Enforcement Officers), and especially to their SRTs (Special Response Teams), such as the FBI HRT (Hostage Rescue Teams) - many of whom are former military special operations.  

This comes from combat arms and special operations veterans, along with veteran Sheriffs and police officers, within the Oath Keepers organization:

Critical Warning:

The Ammon Bundy led occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon must be handled as a normal, non-crisis, law enforcement matter, and preferably by Oregon Sheriffs (who are organized as the Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association), and their deputies, together with the local community there in Harney County, OR.  

The locals can resolve this, if given enough time.   The Oregon Sheriffs can resolve this, if given enough time.

This situation must not be handled in a military or paramilitary fashion, using military assets, military rules of engagement, or otherwise attempting to end it suddenly by use of dynamic assault, resulting in catastrophic loss of life, as has occurred twice in recent American history, with horrific results (at Ruby Ridge in 1992, and at Waco Texas in 1993).  If you do it “Waco” style here, you risk pushing this nation over the edge into a civil war, because there are “no more free Wacos.”

This is not an emergency situation unless you turn it into one.  Ammon Bundy’s occupation of an empty building is essentially the same as civil-disobedience sit-ins that the political left has engaged in for decades, from anti-war and civil rights protesters in the 60s and 70s (including a nineteen month occupation of Alcatraz by American Indian activists), to Occupy Wall Street Movement and Black Lives Matter activists today.

These ranchers, cowboys and veterans just happen to be armed, as westerners tend to be.   Get over it.  There are no hostages.There are no close-by neighbors at risk.  There is nobody there except those who want to be.  So tread lightly, and at most handle this like the Montana Freeman standoff where the FBI was patient and waited them out, with a peaceful surrender coming after eighty one days.   In this situation, the locals will likely have this resolved long before that length of time.  Regardless, there is no rush.

Despite that reality of there being no emergency here, we have very good reason to believe that ideologue leftist bureaucrats within the Obama Administration – such as within the D.O.J., and their politically minded “perfumed prince” puppets within the D.O.D. – are pressuring you to prepare to use military assets and military rules of engagement to conduct a dynamic raid.   

We are an organization of current serving and retired military, police, fire-fighters and other first responders, and we have contacts at every major military installation in America (including Joint Base Lewis-McChord), and at the Pentagon.   We hear things.  We’ll just leave it at that.

And we know that the Obama Administration considered the use of military force during the Bundy Ranch standoff in April, 2014, pursuant to Directive No. 3025.18, “Defense Support of Civil Authorities.”  

Fortunately for all Americans, they decided not to do it.  This fact was confirmed by a May 28, 2014 Washington Times article:

A U.S. official said the Obama administration considered but rejected deploying military force under the directive during the recent standoff with Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and his armed supporters.

So, the military force hammer was, in fact, on the table during Bundy Ranch, as we suspected.  Please don’t try to tell us it’s not on the table again now.   We know it is.  The only question is whether the Obama Admin leftist weenies will be foolish enough to try to actually use it and, if they do, whether you will be foolish enough to obey their idiotic orders and obediently act as that hammer.

In addition, it is clear you federal LEOs have not handled this in the normal law enforcement manner of cordoning off the area and immediately initiating negotiations.  Why is that?  Why has there yet to be even an attempt to open direct lines of communications between you and Ammon Bundy, as members of Pacific Patriot Network, Idaho III%, and Oath Keepers on the ground in Burns, OR have been repeatedly urging you to do for the past week, to no avail?

Don’t do it.  Do not follow unlawful orders if the Obama Administration fools decide to go “full retard.”  No matter how eager the politicians like Harry Reid are for Ammon Bundy’s head, after the black eye Ammon and his family gave them at Bundy Ranch in 2014, and no matter how much they pressure you to “make an example” out of these guys, you cannot drop the hammer on a bunch of ranchers, cowboys and veterans sitting in an empty building without it blowing up in all of our faces.  

Treat this with kid gloves, like the Montana Freeman standoff, instead of like the Waco standoff, or risk setting off a civil war.

The stuffed-shirt, pencil necked metrosexuals inside the D.C. beltway will not be the ones bleeding and dying in the chaos that could follow (at least not at first). 

It will be you current serving military and LEO, and it will be us patriotic veterans, along with our many active duty brothers, who still take their oaths seriously (and we are truly everywhere, including within your immediate ranks) who will bleed.  It will be the warrior class of America killing each other while the political hacks laugh (they hate you too, don’t you know). (Their standard modus operandi is to set the people against each other to divide and conquer and to destroy each other.)

As SGM Joseph Santoro (Ret), Oath Keepers BOD member, and our National Operations NCO put it, while on the ground in Harney County, OR:

I served 25 years in the U.S. Army infantry and EOD, and retired  a Sgt. Maj.    I also served five years as a Contractor at the 10th Special Forces Group and three years as a Contractor at the U.S. Army EOD School.  I know the military, and I know they are watching this closely, just like they watched Bundy Ranch, and this [pointing to the land] is where most of your trigger pullers come from.  Most are country boys who have seen first hand the abuses of their families by the BLM, the EPA, activist judges, etc.  They are not stupid.  They have seen logging, ranching, mining, and farming assaulted and shut down in little towns all around this land.  

And if you Feds get froggy here and smoke a bunch of ranchers and veterans who are justifiably pissed off at what is being done all over the West, you will have active duty warriors climbing up your backsides with extreme prejudice, and us veterans climbing down your throat.  That’s not a threat.  Just a fact.So tread lightly, and don’t tread on us.

Oath Keepers members are on the ground in Burns, OR as part of the Pacific Patriot Network lead “buffer” operation to try to prevent another Waco type incident, to encourage open dialogue and peaceful resolution, and in support of the release of Dwight and Steven Hammond from prison, pressuring Obama to use his power of clemency to commute their sentences and then pardon them.  While all the groups in this coalition disagreed with what Ammon did, we all agree with the broader cause of respect for the rights of the people in the West, and we agree that there are no more free Wacos.

The Right Way and the Wrong Way

The 'federal government' has a spotty record when handling things like this.   It handled the American Indian  occupation of Alcatraz well, letting it go on for nineteen months, during which support for it dwindled.  

It handled the Montana Freeman Standoff well, letting that go on for eighty-one days, till they surrendered.  

But it screwed up big time at Ruby Ridge and Waco, with dead women and children as the result.

During the Ruby Ridge incident, a fourteen year old boy, Samuel Weaver, was shot in the back and killed by U.S. marshalls, and his unarmed mother, Vickie Weaver, was later shot in the face and killed while holding her baby.   Vickie Weaver was shot by the notorious FBI HRT sniper, Lon Tomohisa Horiuchi (a West Point Graduate and former Army officer), under “shoot on sight” military rules of engagement orders issued to the FBI HRT that were later ruled to have been illegal.

At the Waco Texas Branch Davidian standoff, military training facilities were used to prepare the BATF to conduct it’s  unnecessary dynamic assault on the Davidian communal family church/home which they knew was full of women and children, to serve a simple search warrant.   

The BATF also requested training by U.S. Army Special Forces (who were resistant to providing such training.

The local sheriff had conducted searches in the past without incident, and could easily have done so again, and the BATF could have easily detained David Koresh during one of his routine jogging sessions and then conducted the search, but instead the BATF insisted on a needless massive paramilitary assault with agents in full battle-rattle pouring from cattle cars and immediately shooting all the Branch Davidian dogs, including puppies, within the first seconds of the raid.   

That is an idiotic way to begin the service of a search warrant, to say the least.  The result was a massive fire-fight with dead on both sides, as the BATF sprayed thousands of rounds into a building with children inside.

The FBI then carried out a siege of the compound, and instead of dialing it back and doing it right, the D.O.J. and FBI doubled down on stupid.  And Delta helped.  Delta Force Commander, then Col. William G. “Jerry” Boykin, actually “advised Attorney General Janet Reno on what kind of gas to use to end the Federal Government’s standoff” with the final assault on April 19, 1993 that ended in a deadly fire that killed scores of women and children.  Delta Force was there.  FBI HRT was there.   And it was hell on earth for those innocents as they died.

After the flames died out, the FBI agents lost no time in raising the ATF flag over the charred bodies of children and then posed, smiling, for group victory photos in front of the burnt ruins. 

And you wonder why so many Americans hate you? (and Boykin went on to become Commanding General, U.S. Army Special Forces Command (Airborne), Ft. Bragg, NC).

The result was the galvanization of patriots across America to form up militias, and to swear that there will never again be a “free Waco.”  We agree, and therefore we warn you to do this right, no matter what the Obama Admin overlords try to demand.   Do it right, or risk starting a conflagration so great, it cannot be stopped, leading to a bloody, brutal civil war.  

And do it right because it is your duty to refuse those orders, under your oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.   And that includes the domestic enemies now “occupying” Washington D.C.

Special Forces, it is time to go back to your roots and live up to your motto.  Your countrymen are now the oppressed.  And it is time to remember your soldier’s creed.  Each of you is an American soldier, a “guardian of freedom and the American way of life.”   Your brothers in heaven are watching.  Do the right thing.  Stand down, and refuse to obey evil, ghoulish sociopaths who salivate at the prospect of watching Americans die on camera, like they watched during Benghazi.

Tell them that if they want American patriot blood, they need to strap on a plate carrier, chest rig, and an M-4 and go do it themselves.

Putin: It Has Begun – Russia Is At War With NATO

According to the report, Putin told his top Defense officials: “I order [you] to act extremely tough. Any targets that threaten Russian forces or our infrastructure on the ground should be immediately destroyed.”

This means that Russia could potentially use the nuclear weapons in their arsenal against NATO-allied countries in Syria, potentially sparking a World War III scenario.

Spurring these latest Federation war moves, this report explains, are Syrian battlefield reports showing that the American, French, and British aircraft that have been deployed to this war zone are jet fighters whose purpose is air-to-air combat, not ground attack—and that these jet fighters are not deployed to attack Islamic State terrorist forces on the ground, but to threaten the Russian fighter-bombers that are attacking their ground targets—and which in knowing President Putin’s psychology, it is always better to strike first then second.

Even more concerning to MoD experts, this report continues, is that the Obama regime is, also, preparing to unleash total war in the Levant by combining20,000 American-NATO troops with 80,000 Sunni Arab troops from the nations of Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and Jordan to join Turkish military forces that have already invaded Iraq.

In order for President Obama to justify this total war move, this report says, he is backing within the US Congress the Kaine-Flake bill in the Senate (the Rigell-Welch bill in the House) that has bipartisan backers in both the House and the Senate that repeals the previous Iraq War authorization and authorizes three years of conflict, with options to reauthorize it.

With Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu reporting today, however, that 4,000 sorties by Aerospace Forces have destroyed more than 8,000 Islamic State terrorist facilities, and even though these barbarians still hold 70% of Syria’s territory, sheer numbers of military forces can in no way defeat them—because this war isn’t only against men, but the mental-religious ideology that controls them.

In explaining this mental-religious mindset, this report continues, it must be noted that the online magazine of these Islamic State terrorists is called Dabiq and sets out their vision—and that this title is no accident as it is a town in northern Syria currently held by them where, according to Islamic prophecy, “the armies of Rome will mass to meet the armies of Islam”.

Confidential comments about this Islamic States mental-religious mindset, too, made by Major General Michael K. Nagata, then US Special Operations commander in the Middle East, this report points out, were, even more, correct than the West is telling their peoples about this grave threat—and as he stated: “We have not defeated the idea. We do not even understand the idea.”

Also to be noted about the Islamic State, this report grimly states, are that these types of Caliphates cannot exist as underground movements because territorial authority is a requirement.  But take away its command of territory, and all those oaths of allegiance are no longer binding—which by the Obama regimes and its Sunni Arab allies protection of them most assuredly will ensure its continued existence.

As to why the Obama regime and its allies are supporting a Sunni Muslim world where those who embrace “Hollywood values” regarding abortion, adultery and homosexuality would get their heads chopped off as quickly as converts to Christianity, this report continues, it should be noted that some in the West are beginning to see the danger they are in—after all, in nations where these Sunni Muslims are already huge majorities, one needs to rightly ask: Where are the Jews? Where have all the Christians gone?

With nations like Japan and Israel (for example) never allowing immigration into their countries by peoples of Muslim faith, this report continues, they have protected themselves from internal Islamic destruction—unlike the United States, though, where the highly influential American imam and college professor, Yasir Qadhi, described by a 2011 New York Times Magazine essay as “one of the most influential conservative clerics in American Islam”, has told his followers: “Christians are “by necessity and by definition … the most evil of all evils. Like all “unbelievers” and “polytheists,” Christians are “filthy.” They are “nausea” (feces, urine) — “a filthy impure dirty substance.”

And with these Western nations, like the United States, allowing themselves to be continually invaded by these Islamic State terrorists and their supporters, this report concludes, more attacks against them are soon to come too—especially when viewed in the light of Germany reporting today that over 400 of these terrorists in their country are “ready to attack at a moments notices”, and new reports coming from the American Midwest State of Missouri that suspected Islamic terrorists this past week have bought over 150 cell phones and have, also, been stealing propane tanks.

Oregon standoff: 'government' and media continue their lying propaganda spin

As the occupation in their name fuels a media circus, Susie Hammond’s husband and son are 800 miles away – victims, many say, of an unjust prosecution

When Susie Hammond talks to her husband Dwight on the phone, the short calls are often filled with moments of silence. Dwight, who celebrated his 74th birthday on Wednesday, is locked up in a federal prison in southern California, more than 800 miles from his home in Harney County, eastern Oregon.

  Black Oregon militiaman:  'Blsck Lives Matter can learn from the 'occupiers.'  Brandon Dowd encourages more people to visit the refuge and to get schooled on constitutional rights, and insists he's among a handful of non-white members.   

Susie Hammond continued:  

“He can’t hear very good on the phone,” said Susie, 74, sitting in the living room of her house on a snow- covered street in the small town of Burns. 

Because neither wants to upset each other, they do not discuss their struggles. “If he thinks I’m going to be worried about him, he doesn’t talk about it,” said Susie, her eyes welling up. “I do the same. So there’s kind of dead time on the line. It’s very hard.”

Two weeks ago, Dwight and Susie’s son Steven, 46, began a five-year prison sentence for 'arson offenses' prosecutors said the two ranchers committed on 'federal land'. Their imprisonment inspired an armed militia of 'rightwing activists', most from outside Oregon, to 'storm' a federal wildlife refuge in protest of 'government land-use regulations' and the treatment of the Hammonds.  ( I sincerely hope and pray readers are getting a CLEAR picture of the TRUTH of what is taking place in Oregon - in what was once known as America - the land of the free and the home of the brace - no longer free.)

The 'occupation' of the Malheur national wildlife refuge has continued to make international headlines and create divisions among the residents of rural Harney County. With the 'occupation' entering its third week with no end in sight, trivial controversies, political spats, arrivals of armed “patriot” groups and bizarre publicity stunts have dominated local and national news. 

Largely left behind in the media circus is a locally beloved ranching family torn apart by a prosecution commentators across the political spectrum say was cruel and unjust.  “I still don’t believe it,” Susie Hammond said, adding that she refuses to accept the idea that her husband of 56 years and her youngest son could now spend half a decade behind bars. “We just go day by day.” 

Close friends of the Hammonds – some of whom grew up alongside Steven and have been neighbors for decades – say they have done everything they can to keep the spotlight on the father and son locked up in federal correctional institution. But the cries for freedom for the Hammonds have sometimes been almost entirely absent from press events of militia leader Ammon Bundy and the news reports that follow.

The Hammonds are just good people, down to earth folks. They’d help any neighbor.

It is a particularly frustrating reality for some ranchers in Harney County, given that the injustice of the Hammonds’ imprisonment is the sole factor in this controversy that seems to have inspired consensus.  

Fighting for their release is a cause that everyone could get behind, ranchers said, but instead many are wasting their energy debating the merits of an armed takeover of a wildlife sanctuary.

“The Hammonds are just good people, down-to-earth folks,” said Wes Land, a 56-year-old Burns resident who helps manage a ranch near the wildlife refuge and has known the Hammonds for years. “They’d help any neighbor.” 

Land said he worried that 'the militia’s violent image' (now there's an 'opinion' for you - can't help but wonder HOW that one was birthed) could taint the Hammonds’ reputation and make it harder for them to get out of prison. 

“I’m afraid the judge or whoever hears the case, it’s going to put doubt in their mind that Steven and Dwight might do something against the 'government'.”  (Another stupid 'assumption' - or IS IT a contrived statement to accomplish further destruction of the Bundys, Hammonds and the militia?  This is NOT our 'government' but an Illuminati Nazi criminal mafia cabal stealing the ranchers blind, using illegal contracts to sell off the ranchers land, land that does NOT belong to the cabal OR to their corporation and, in the process, destroying ranchers' property, burning the cattle alive, and using false accusations in an illegal 'court' with an illegal unconstitutional 'sheriff', and an illegal 'judge' to sentence these good people to prison.)

The US Department of Justice and the Hammonds and their many Harney County supporters tell very different stories about what led to the imprisonment of the ranchers. 

According to 'federal prosecutors', the Hammonds were responsible for multiple fires on federal lands. (This is a blatant lie according to ranchers in the area and who know the Hammonds. It is the BLM who was responsible for all the out of control fires, not the Hammonds.)  In 2001, they started a fire, prosecutors say, to cover up evidence that they had illegally hunted deer on US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property, and the blaze ultimately consumed 139 acres of public land. 

Then in 2006, when a lightning storm started numerous fires, according to federal officials Steven ignored a “burn ban” and started “backfires” in an effort to save his ranch’s winter feed. That fire also spread to public land.

In Burns and the surrounding ranching community, many say the allegations are completely unbelievable and that the Hammonds have always been good stewards of the land. They say the ranchers have struggled with oppressive regulations and have done their best to work with the federal government and maintain their livelihood and cattle. 

“They took good care of their private grounds and the public property,” said Jeff Maupin, a 47-year-old Harney County rancher and a childhood friend of Steven Hammond. “Ask anybody – there’s no complaints about how they managed the land.”

The idea that the Hammonds burned a fire to cover up evidence of hunting is laughable to Maupin – not only because it would be so out of character, but also because a fire simply would not have the capacity to destroy deer carcasses, he said.

“Just think about it – how in the world if you were poaching could you cover up evidence with a brush fire? Something has to burn so hot to burn flesh and bone. It does not make sense.”

The Hammonds have argued that in the first incident they started a “prescribed fire” to burn off invasive species – and that it inadvertently spread. They also say they would never poach deer on BLM land. They ignited the second fire, the Hammonds say, simply to protect their feed and home from a growing fire tied to severe lightning storms. 

Regardless of the merits of the prosecutors’ case, the sentencing shocked many people. While some in Harney County thought the Hammonds would only face some kind of fine, it became clear that the 'government' was taking a much harsher approach. 

Convicted under the Anti-terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act, the Hammonds were subject to a mandatory minimum sentence of five years. But in 2012, US district judge Michael Hogan said that sentence was “grossly disproportionate to the severity of the offenses”. As a result, Dwight served a three-
month sentence and Steven spent a year behind bars. 

But the nightmare for the Hammonds didn’t end there. After the ranchers came home, the Department of  (NON-)Justice appealed Hogan’s lighter sentencing, arguing it was illegal to ignore the mandatory minimum sentence. Last fall, the Hammonds were resentenced and forced to return to prison – this time for five years.

We didn’t think it could happen,” said Susie Hammond, adding that stress has taken a serious toll on her health. “We thought we lived in America where you have one trial and you have one sentencing. Throughout Harney County, residents refer to the re-sentencing as a clear case of “double jeopardy”. Many have petitioned the White House to intervene.

Kerry Wagner, a 58-year-old Burns resident who runs a furniture business and is friends with the Hammonds, said it was painful to think about Dwight and Steven stuck behind bars.  “They are not used to being caged up. Look at all this land. They’re used to being out in the open,” he said. “It’s devastating … They’re just the nicest people.” 

Susie said she did not know the Bundys well and was not keeping up with what was happening at the refuge. Her top priority, she said, was finding a way to get her family back together.  Due to various health problems, Susie said she did not like to drive long distances anymore – and without Dwight, she has been unable to regularly visit her children and grandchildren and travel around the rural county to run errands. “It’s a long ways to and from places that you can deal with if you have a normal day,” she said. “We don’t have any normal days anymore.”

If Obama is watching the Democratic primary debates and wishing he could get in there and mix it up, NRA vice-president Wayne LaPierre has an offer he might be interested in. 

LaPierre, who has vehemently opposed Obama’s recent executive orders, is challenging the president to a live television showdown.

“I’ll meet you for a one-on-one, one-hour debate with a mutually agreed-upon moderator on any network that will take it,” LaPierre wrote in an online post. “No pre-screened questions and no gas-bag answers. Americans will judge for themselves who they trust and believe on this issue: you or the NRA.”

As magnificent as this debate would surely be, there’s no way Obama will accept the challenge. His CNN town hall meeting was specifically designed to promote his executive orders and yet he looked like he wanted to squirm out of his skin on numerous occasions. He’s got the “gas-bag answers” down, but when he’s confronted with the inconvenient facts of American gun violence, his ignorance becomes quickly apparent. By the time LaPierre chewed him up and spit him out, the American people would be demanding a recall election.

Even if Obama had more confidence, though, he couldn’t accept this invitation. His administration has gone so overboard in demonizing the NRA that it would be like agreeing to debate the leader of ISIS. 

In the new Democrat narrative, the NRA is the only thing standing in the way of a peaceful, safe America. This organization is so villainous that Hillary Clinton can attack Bernie Sanders for having a “D-” grade from the NRA. You can’t have millions of Americans tune in and realize that these dastardly lobbyists are actually the ones looking out for our freedoms. Even with a perfect echo chamber in the media, the Democrats can’t convince Americans to give up their guns. 

When was the last time we really got to listen to a smart, sensible, conservative speech on guns on any of the major networks? We are constantly brainwashed to believe that we need more gun control…and yet the majority of Americans remain fiercely opposed to Obama’s efforts. 

That’s the NRA’s doing? Come on. So Obama’s probably out, but aren’t there any other anti-gun fanatics willing to represent? How about Julianne Moore? Michael Bloomberg? Michael Moore? Hillary? 

Hopefully someone rises to the challenge.  If nothing else, it will make for a wildly entertaining spectacle.

ICELAND SENTENCES 26 CORRUPT BANKERS TO 74 YEARS IN PRISON

(Source: AmericanNewsx) – Iceland just sentenced their 26th banker to prison for his part in the 2008 economic collapse. The charges ranged from breach of fiduciary duties to market manipulation to embezzlement.
When most people think of Iceland, they envision fire and ice. Major volcanoes and vast ice fields are abundant due to its position on the northern part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. (A hot July day in Reykjavik is around 55 degrees.) However, Iceland is also noted for being one of the Nordic Socialist countries, complete with universal health care, free education and a lot other Tea Potty nightmares. Therefore, as you might imagine, they tend to view and react to economic situations slightly differently than the U.S.
When the banking induced “Great Recession of ’08” struck, Iceland’s economic hit was among the hardest. However, instead of rewarding fraudulent banking procedures with tons of bailout money, they took a different path.
Prior to the recession, Iceland had one of the more thriving economies in the world, in spite of the fact that their total population (327,000) wouldn’t even fill a mid-sized American city. When the recession struck, they were among the earliest and hardest hit. However, instead of running to the vaults to shower the banks with money, they let the banks fail. They also resisted traveling down the European/Republican austerity road. Instead, they kept their social programs intact at a time when they were most needed.
And, they sent fraudulent bankers to jail.
When Iceland’s three major banks collapsed, it resulted in defaults totaling $114 billion in a country with agross domestic product (GDP) of only $19 billion. In October, 2008 the parliament passed emergency legislation to take over the domestic operations of the major banks and established new banks to handle them. They did not, however, take over any of the foreign assets or obligations. Those stayed with the original banks, right into bankruptcy.
They then brought charges against several banking executives for fraud and market manipulation, resulting in sentences ranging from four to five and a half years. As the special prosecutor said,
Why should we have a part of our society that is not being policed or without responsibility?
In the U.S., we simply tapped a few wrists with small fines, that ended up being paid by their respective banks.(Can you say “got off scot free?”)
Sending the bank executives off to play rock hockey for a few years didn’t solve the problem, but it did send a message not to do that again.
At its worst, Icelandic currency, the Icelandic krona (ISK) was trading at around 250 ISK per Euro. In order to qualify for an IMF (International Monetary Fund) loan, Iceland raised interest rates to 18%, which, of course, attracted bank deposits. Iceland also received a $2.5 billion loan from Europe’s Nordic countries.
To power its recovery, Iceland utilized its natural advantages such as its clean, cheap geothermal energy to attract the tech industry. Icelandic commercial fishing remained strong and as the general world economy picked up, the tourist industry bloomed. The deeply depreciated krona also helped make Iceland and Icelandic products very attractive, economically.  On the banking front, they facilitated domestic debt restructuring and fiscal adjustments as conditions changed.
As to how it has all turned out, here’s what the International Monetary Fund Survey has to say about it:
Iceland has rebounded after the 2008/9 crisis and will soon surpass pre-crisis output levels with strong performance in tourism and fisheries. Debt ratios are on a downward path and balance sheets have broadly been restored. The financial sector is back on track though with some important items remaining on the docket.
As the above survey also states, Iceland is “the first 2008-10 crisis country in Europe to surpass its pre-crisis peak of economic output.”
The krona is now running 142 ISK per Euro. (up from 290/1 in 2008) The 2014 inflation rate was 2.05%.(down from 12.59% in 2008) The wage index is running at 190.9. (up from 132.8 in 2008)
Btw, they did all this while keeping their social welfare intact. (There goes another bagger day-dream.)
Iceland’s President, Olafur Ragnar Grimmson explained how the country managed to recover from the global financial disaster,
We were wise enough not to follow the traditional prevailing orthodoxies of the Western financial world in the last 30 years. We introduced currency controls, we let the banks fail, we provided support for the poor, and we didn’t introduce austerity measures like you’re seeing in Europe.
When asked whether or not other countries, Europe in particular, would succeed with Iceland’s “let the banks fail” policy, President Grimmson gave his answer,
Why are the banks considered to be the holy churches of the modern economy? Why are private banks not like airlines and telecommunication companies and allowed to go bankrupt if they have been run in an irresponsible way? The theory that you have to bail out banks is a theory that you allow bankers enjoy for their own profit, their success, and then let ordinary people bear their failure through taxes and austerity. 
People in enlightened democracies are not going to accept that in the long run.

In an unusual breach of decorum, even for the divided Congress, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi chased Rep. Tom Marino across the House floor, taking offense at comments by the Pennsylvania Republican during debate on the border funding bill.

That congressman who was the target of nutty Nancy’s wrath, Tom Marino (R-PA), later described to Fox News what happened, and how Pelosi angrily insulted him and his constituents, calling him “insignificant” several times.

After Marino concluded his remarks and as many Republicans applauded their colleague, Pelosi crossed the chamber again in view of cameras, enraged, pointing and sticking her finger at Marino.

She then followed Marino up a Republican aisle, gesturing and arguing with him. Lawmakers on the GOP side gathered in dismay as one spoke out to tell the chair that the House was not in order, in an effort to halt the bickering.

According to Pelosi spokeswoman Evangeline George, “Leader Pelosi just wanted to remind the Congressman that House Democrats had the courage to pass the DREAM Act – and have the courage to stand up for what the American people want: bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform.”

George added that “Pelosi accepted the Congressman’s apology.”

But Marino’s chief of staff, Bill Tighe, stressed that Marino did not apologize to Pelosi, and will not apologize.

45 countries with nuclear facilities are struggling to put basic measures in place

 A nuclear watchdog group warns that, despite efforts to secure nuclear material, nations are still vulnerable to theft, as well as acts of sabotage or cyberattacks, which could enable terrorists to obtain nuclear materials or trigger a dangerous meltdown.

Twenty-four states “still have one kilogram (2.2 pounds) or more of weapons-usable nuclear materials…[and] nearly 2,000 metric tons (4.4 million pounds) of weapons-usable nuclear material remain stored around the world, much of it still too vulnerable to theft,” said Sam Nunn, chair of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, in the introduction to a new report titled “2016 NTI Nuclear Security Index: Theft and Sabotage.”

The NTI Index ranks nations in terms of their safeguards for keeping nuclear explosive materials protected.  Alarmingly, the report found that more than 80 percent of all nuclear explosive materials are held by militaries “whose practices and safeguards are not covered by international agreements on security of such materials.” 

The report urged all nuclear weapons states to agree on a set of security precautions to implement.  “We are in a race between cooperation and catastrophe, and the world’s leaders must run faster,” said Nunn, a former Senate Armed Services Committee Chair, in commenting on the reports’ findings, according to The Center for Public Integrity.

In 2014, the index listed seven countries that were taking the most important steps in preventing theft of nuclear materials through their elimination, but two years on only one country, Uzbekistan, had done so.

Nunn told The Center for Public Integrity that “brutal attacks and incidents by ISIL, Al Qaeda, Boko Haram and other organizations are on the rise, raising the specter of catastrophic nuclear terrorism if they or other terrorists get control of dangerous nuclear materials."  He added, “…Of course, that’s what the world must prevent.”

Among the 24 states with weapons-usable nuclear materials, Australia topped the list of countries with strong nuclear protections for the third time, and Japan was the most improved state. North Korea came in last.  France, the US, and the United Kingdom score the highest among nuclear-armed states, and the US, India, Russia and the UK are the most improved nuclear-armed states, according to the report.

Sweden earned first place for states without or with less than one kilogram of weapons-usable nuclear materials, and Djibouti is the most improved of those states, noted the report.

Other findings were that no improvements have been made in several areas to secure highly enriched uranium and plutonium since 2014. Those areas are on-site physical protection, control and accounting, insider threat prevention, physical security during transport, and response capabilities.

For the first time, the index included the risk to nuclear facilities posed by cyberattacks and sabotage, and found that nearly half of the assessed countries did not have a single requirement to protect facilities from cyberattacks. Only nine of the 24 countries with weapons-usable material received a maximum score on cybersecurity.

The report also found that 45 countries with nuclear facilities were struggling to put basic measures in place to prevent an act of sabotage that could result in a radiological release on par in scale with that of the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan.

The report found that Finland topped the list of those in need of protection. Australia, Canada, the UK, and Japan rounded out the top five.

World leaders are scheduled to meet in Washington, DC on March 31 for the final Nuclear Security Summit, which was created to draw attention to the potential for theft of nuclear material.
