Project Chess: Skype’s secret program aimed at making calls readily available to intelligence agencies

In yet another instance of a report indicating that tech giants worked directly with intelligence agencies to enable government surveillance, it is now being reported that Skype began a secret program called Project Chess to enable intelligence agencies and law enforcement to easily get a hold of calls.

This comes after it was revealed that Skype was part of the massive National Security Agency (NSA) surveillance program known as PRISM. 

The latest revelation about Skype’s secret program is quite interesting given the controversy surrounding the privacy and security of Skype. Indeed, the NSA leaks hinted that Microsoft may have lied about the security of Skype, though many suspicions were raised last year after they filed for a patent for “legal intercept” technology.

According to a New York Times report citing people briefed on the program, Project Chess was limited to less than a dozen people inside Skype and focused on exploring both the legal and technical issues in making Skype calls readily available to individuals in the intelligence and law enforcement communities.

The report also details the close relationship between Internet giants and the NSA. Max Kelly, former chief security officer for Facebook, for example, left the company in 2010 in order to join the NSA.

Silicon Valley companies work closely with the NSA because it is a mutually beneficial relationship. The Internet giants have the data the NSA wants along with the data analytics tools they need while the NSA has an unknown amount of money to spend.

Precise numbers for the NSA budget are impossible to maintain given that the budget is classified.

However, Steven Aftergood, director of the Federation of American Scientists’ government secrecy program, told CNN that he thinks about $10 billion go to the NSA.

Former White House budget official for national security Gordon Adams, on the other hand, said he wouldn’t be surprised if the NSA’s resources exceed $20 billion per year.

It’s hardly surprising that tech companies would want to work with such a massive, powerful agency. If the New York Times report is correct, they’re doing precisely that.

Project Chess reportedly began around five years ago, even before the majority of the company was sold by eBay to outside investors in 2009. Skype was then purchased by Microsoft in a deal valued at $8.5 billion which was completed in October 2011.

The project was developed as the company had “contentious talks with the government over legal issues,” according to one person briefed on the project.

Interestingly, it seems that when a Skype executive stated last year that recent changes in the operation of Skype were not made at the request of Microsoft in order to make government spying easier, they were actually being truthful.

That is because the PRISM documents leaked by Edward Snowden showed that Skype joined the program on Feb. 6, 2011, before Microsoft even took over the company.

It’s important to note that Microsoft will no longer affirm statements made by Skype back in 2008 indicating that Skype calls couldn’t be wiretapped.

Unsurprisingly, Frank Shaw, a Microsoft spokesman, declined comment to the Times.

Yet, as Ryan Gallagher pointed out, Skype did attempt to alleviate surveillance fears in March of this year by releasing a transparency report that claimed the company did not hand over any Skype communications content to any agency anywhere in the world.

“Now, though, the disclosures about PRISM and Project Chess appear to flagrantly discredit Microsoft’s Skype eavesdropping denials,” Gallagher noted.

“While publicly portraying Skype chats as beyond government intrusion, the company was apparently working to grant U.S. authorities covert access to them,” he wrote.

Ultimately, “the recent revelations illustrate that you can never be too skeptical, and that blindly trusting large U.S. companies’ public relations claims is unwise in an age of gag orders and secret surveillance programs,” according to Gallagher.

The NSA’s reach extends into the hacker community, as I recently highlighted in pointing out that NSA director and chief of the Pentagon’s Cyber Command Gen. Keith Alexander will be giving the keynote speech at the upcoming Black Hat Conference.

Alexander also showed up at Defcon, one of the largest hacker conferences in the world, last year to recruit hackers for the NSA.

“They’re very open about their interest in recruiting from the hacker community,” Jennifer Granick, director of civil liberties at the Stanford Law School’s Center for Internet and Society, said to the Times.

They also work with people like career Air Force intelligence officer and former director of the NSA Kenneth Minihan, who is now managing director of Paladin Capital Group. After he retired, Minihan also ran the NSA’s outside professional networking organization.

Paladin is a Washington, D.C.-based venture capital firm which, according to the Times, “in part specializes in financing start-ups that offer high-tech solutions for the N.S.A. and other intelligence agencies.”

Richard Schaeffer Jr., a former NSA executive, also sites on the strategic advisory board of Paladin.

This makes Minihan essentially an advanced scout for the NSA, helping the agency in their efforts to get a hold of the latest technology to analyze and exploit the immense amount of data at their fingertips.

Paladin is one of the private companies that work closely with the intelligence community while In-Q-Tel is directly financed by the Central Intelligence Agency to invest in tech startups.

A wide variety of companies have received funding from In-Q-Tel and an even wider range of companies have directly benefited from the technologies developed thanks to intelligence community dollars.

To say the intelligence community has their fingers in just about everything in Silicon Valley would be a bit of an understatement.

Food safety advocates hope Connecticut’s move sparks nationwide momentum for labeling of genetically modified foods

In a landmark act, Connecticut has become the first state to require the labeling of genetically modified (gmo) foods.

As the Hartford Courant reports, the bill entails a sort of trigger in order for it to take effect:

For the legislation to take effect four states — including those bordering Connecticut — must pass a similar bill. In addition, any combination of northeastern states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania or New Jersey), with an aggregate population of at least 20 million people, must approve labeling legislation.

Immediately after the vote, cheers could be heard outside the Hall of the House from advocates who had been pushing the labeling requirement.

The Center for Food Safety (CFS) said the trigger “unnecessarily puts on hold what consumers and lawmakers have already validated as important legislation,” but still welcomed the passage of the legislation as a victory in the food movement, and hoped Connecticut’s action would prove a catalyst for other states to enact similar measures.

Mark Kastel, co-director of the Cornucopia Institute, told the New York Times that the trigger may not be entirely negative.

“The hurdles in the Connecticut bill, if surmounted, would mean a critical mass in the marketplace that would emulate the impacts that would have materialized if California had passed its ballot initiative,” said Kastel.

Dave Murphy, founder and executive director of Food Democracy Now!, cheered the bill’s passage as a victory of people power over corporate agriculture, saying, “The grassroots have won in Connecticut for a key victory over Monsanto and the biotech lobby.”

“It was inspiring to watch Connecticut legislators supporting GMO labeling stand strong in the face of the biotech industry’s effort to kill the bill,” said Murpy.

“Numerous other states in the Northeast and around the country are actively considering pending GE food labeling bills. Connecticut’s leadership provides momentum and an incentive for these other states to move forward,” Rebecca Spector, who works on state GMO labeling legislative efforts at CFS, said in a statement. “Other states should now pass GE labeling laws, providing millions of U.S. consumers with the basic right to know how their food is produced.”

The legislation now heads to Gov. Malloy, who is expected to sign it.

    I re-listened to Tony's call today and thought a few of the things he said were worth reading in print, as it makes even more sense with the other info that has come out today. These are not complete but what I did get I tried to keep the phrasing and context as close as I could.

    On TV reporting all issues with Kuwait resolved and still reporting in a few days the dinar will rise and the dollar will go down.

    On TV showing Maliki meeting with other leaders and all is going good. People are happy in the streets.

    Same security forces back at the CBI the last 2 days but no news why they are there.
    Saying Iraq will pay the 11 billion by the end of the month, but government source is saying it is already paid. As far as over here.

Bank security still going in early and scheduled through next week to go in early. Were told to be ready.

    Last night I was told things are going on right then. Was told they were waiting on the UN to sign off right then, and the meeting took place last night, way late into the night, even though the public meeting is not until 27th. The UN supposedly signed off last night even though we may not see it for a day or two.

    People all around the world were called into their offices for one singular event and you will see it soon.

    It did not get signed until last night because of President Obama if the information is correct. He wanted all debt that was owed to the USA from every country to be paid by the global reset. He wanted a formal agreement from each country, that they would pay us the money we have been loaning them for the last 50 years. It was not finalized until last night.

A whistle-blower from Higher Education Services Corporation in Albany New York came forward and advised Attorney Orly Taitz that she personally reviewed Barack Obama’s financial aid information, which stated that financial aid was given to Obama as foreign student and as a citizen of Indonesia.

Additionally, Obama failed to submit the Appellee’s brief in Taitz v Obama, Feinstein, Emken. This is an appeal, which was reinstated by the Chief Judge of the Fourth District Court of Appeal Kathleen O’Leary.Appellant Taitz filed her Appellant’s brief.

Appellees failed to file an Appellees’ brief. They were given additional 15 days and they failed again. Attorney Taitz submitted a notice of failure by Appellees to file an Appellee’s brief and provided the court with this additional information, as part of the appeal revolves around the decision by the Superior Court judge Charles Marginis to rule in favor of the Occidental college and deny a motion to compel production of a redacted   college registration for Obama in light of over a 100 pages of records showing Obama to be a citizen of Indonesia using forged and fraudulently obtained IDs.

As noted in my June 7, 2013 report titled DHS Insider: It’s about to get very ugly, the additional information provided to me that was temporarily withheld from publication is now being released. The methodical and incremental release of information was (and is) deliberate, to allow other things to play out, such as the public exposure to the name Edward Snowden and his revelations regarding just how extensive the domestic surveillance apparatus is­and who the surveillance is actually targeting.

Back to the early hours of June 7, 2013

“You’ve got to understand that they are trying to find the likes of me,” stated my source. Pretty soon, no one is going to be talking to anybody, especially in the alternative media, even about the damn weather. They won’t risk it, and I’m not just talking about a risk to their careers, either. There has been a systematic method of intimidation with some known and even “approved” media contacts, not just against them, but against their families,” he emphasized.

“Just give it two weeks at most, it will come out that no one will talk to the media,” he added. [Author note: See this article about AP CEO confirming their sources won’t talk anymore, dated 19 June 2013]. “But let me give you some details about some things I was told too. I know this is second-hand information, but it was from someone in a position of authority to know, someone I trust, and someone who I expect to reveal to [name of elected official deleted] the true extent of what has and in some cases, still is taking place. This individual is preparing to disclose much, and has obtained legal counsel, but the problem is that one misstep could be fatal in a literal sense, and [this source] knows that. If not fatal, there are other legal challenges, especially under a corrupt judiciary. By the time this appears in print, the disclosures will likely have already been made, just not made public.”

The Holder hammer & the Chicago plumbers

“The revelation last month that the Justice Department seized two months of telephone records from the Associated Press (AP) last year is only a small part of the story. The public admission is that the Holder Justice Department obtained only telephone records from three locations, something like 20 lines, and records of calls from the House press gallery for about two months. That’s one of the biggest lies ever told,” stated my source.

“The truth is that it was not limited to AP, and not limited to just number identification and call duration, but was an extensive and active wiretapping operation that included every reporter’s telephone conversations, landline and cell, text messages from their personal and business cellular telephones and other electronic devices. The primary focus is on the press gallery, where everything was monitored in real time.”

“Not only were the communications of reporters compromised, so were the private communications of congressmen and their aides. Listen to what I am saying,” he stressed, “the operation was much larger than anyone can imagine. Recordings, actual voice recordings, were turned over to the Obama administration, along with transcripts of texts, other communications and contacts.”

“NSA assets were used, with the NSA acting as the collection agency for their intermediate client, the DHS. Then, at the highest levels of DHS, they sifted through the information collected. But the ultimate client or recipient of the information was the Obama White House. I don’t know if other agencies were involved in sorting through the material, but DHS, and this was limited to the highest of levels at DHS under the personal direction of Janet Napolitano, provided volumes of data directly to the Obama administration. One person inside the administration I know received the data was Valerie Jarrett,” he stated.
“The other part of the lie is that this operation lasted only two months. That’s a lie. It went on well into late last year, was halted shortly after the election, but then picked back up sometime in January,” he said. Something happened in January where there appeared to be another active wiretapping operation started, but this one appeared to be more focused, or more limited in scope. Maybe, and I’m just guessing here based on some of the things I heard, that the Obama people had narrowed their interests based on the fruits of the previous operation.”

Now the ‘Holder hammer’ is coming down on anyone who opens their mouth, or previously leaked any information that could have been or be detrimental to Obama. I can tell you that Valerie Jarrett is working, out of the White House, with DHS and other agencies to co-ordinate their efforts with Justice,” the latter a reference to the Eric Holder Justice Department. “At the same time, on the media side, there is a ‘plumbers team’ headed out of Chicago, with a long reach to the New York and Washington press correspondents. So they are not only going after those on the inside, but the journalists from the other side.”

“The intimidation factor is huge if a media contact is outside of a small circle of ‘vetted’ journalists who are completely loyal to Obama and his agenda. If you are not part of that inner circle, you are a target, it’s that simple. You are seeing the formation of a state-run media and an administration that will intimidate, punish or prosecute anyone considered unfriendly to the Obama camp from the inside and the outside. Like I said, this also involves elected officials, their staffs and even in some cases, their families. And it is all being done under the color of authority and the pretext of national security,” he added.

Loyalty to the man, not the office

It was at this point I asked my source, what were or are they looking for?

“Anything and everything,” he responded. “Obviously, it’s about loyalty to the man, damn the country and damn the law. Protect the man and the agenda, which is not just his agenda, but the people who put him in office.”

Like who? I asked.

“Who benefits? This is about dismantling the United States and nothing less. This is about foreign interests who have taken over our government without a shot. Look at Syria and our economy, both issues that are expected, at least as discussed within DHS,  to play out this year. You had it correct on both counts when you wrote about our involvement in Syria, by way of weapons shipments from Benghazi, to open another war. You also had it correct when you wrote about the killing of the U.S. Dollar. You want to know how I know this? Because the blowback from those two issues alone, one foreign and the other domestic, are what DHS is gearing up for in our ‘homeland,’” he stated.

“Unless there are enough people who wake up fast enough, we will become involved in a war in Syria, with boots on the ground, facing not only Syrian troops but Russian forces. There will be blowback here in the United States. Along with this, you will see the U.S. dollar ‘collapse’ as the reserve currency, and social uprisings here in the U.S. over both. It will be DHS teamed with other federal agencies who will meet, with force, the uprisings. There will be chaos here, but it is expected to be different depending upon where you are at. Big cities will have the most problems, and plans are being made to cordon off cities and restrict travel at the time when these uprisings start. I really didn’t want to use this phrase, but expect martial law to be used ‘for the security’ of those affected by the turmoil.”

“Then, you will see the internet being regulated in a manner that will serve only the agenda of this administration. Either right before or during these events, so-called citizen journalists will be particularly vulnerable. Watch for a serious crackdown of bloggers, online news publications and websites, but not in the way that will be immediately obvious. The ‘plumbers team’ have coordinated their efforts with Internet Service Providers to identify the people like you and others who publish their information on web sites. At first they will cite violations of terms of service. Then, they will select a few ‘troublemakers’ and identify them for criminal prosecution. Others will experience hacking and other electronic attacks. And during all of that, there will be the Obama team flooding the internet with misinformation and disinformation. In fact, that is already taking place.”

During our conversation, I started to ask about certain journalists and bloggers who died, either from ‘natural causes’ or in accidents, suicides, and under other strange circumstances. My source interrupted before I could finish my question.

“Don’t even go there, don’t bother asking me, because I just don’t know, he stated in a rather agitated manner. I do have my suspicions about one, maybe two who got a bit too close to the truth and foolishly trusted certain people, but I really don’t know for sure.”

So, what will all of this look like, I asked, when it all comes down.

“I’ve thought about that myself, and have seen some DHS documents outlining different scenarios. Maybe not what you think,” he replied. “Outside of the rioting in certain urban areas, the low stocks at your local stores, and rationing of gas, maybe not as dire as you imagine. My best guess is a combination of the riots of the 1960s along with the gasoline rationing of the 1970s, at least at first. Once people who want to save the country, those with good intentions begin to organize, it will become incrementally worse,” he stated.

“Like a car careening off a cliff, but not hitting the bottom right away. It will hit jagged edges first, each time suffering more damage. Each blow will be worse than the next.”

Centralization

“Let me try to sum it up for you. It’s getting late, and I mean it’s getting late this morning and late for our country. This is all about centralization of power and pursuing an agenda that makes no sense or has any benefit to the United States.  All of the things we are seeing are related. The IRS, Syria, Benghazi, the NSA, and just about everything you can name is about one thing: the consolidation of power and the centralization of authority. This party did not start with Obama, and might not end with him either.”

I interjected my surprise at this point, noting that I thought the worst, like others, that we might not see another presidential election. “When did I mention anything about an election?”

“You’re not thinking big enough,” he admonished. Nobody is thinking big enough, or has been thinking at all, which is why we’re in this position. This is a global agenda, or an agenda of the global interests, the money interests. Do you think for one second that if a person, and I don’t give a damn who it is or what position they hold, becomes a liability to those interests that they wouldn’t get rid of them? Don’t you think those in power know this?

Cryptically, he spoke of Obama’s apparent infatuation with Abraham Lincoln and asked, rhetorically whether that means anything. A country that will fall into a civil war of sorts, and all of the things common to both. Does Obama know something, or feel something? Is that playing in to his desire for oaths only to him, and not the country? Think about it.”

Time frame

As we were parting, I felt a bit like Peter Falk playing Columbo in the 1970s television series when I said that I had “just one more question.” When is all of this going to start?

What? He turned and looked at me as if I had uttered an insult.

“It’s already begun. You’re seeing it now. If you want to know a date when our money will tank, or when the war goes hot, or when you won’t be able to get food or gas, I can’t tell you, and I don’t think anyone can. But remember what I said before, about the metals taking a hit and something happening after that. Look at the metals market. The U.S. has very little gold. Everything you see is being manipulated, from the economy to the metals to foreign policy. I believe that most politicians know how dire things are, and most are clawing their way for a seat at the global table. But if I had to answer you, and I guess I will so you’ll let me leave, I’d look for something to happen in early July as a precursor to the more major events later in the summer or fall, maybe in October.”

“But don’t try to look at dates for answers, look at events, even the small ones. Remember, their objectives haven’t changed, only their plans to adapt to the right conditions. To the unaware, it will look like everything was just one big unfortunate coincidence.”

06/20/13 [poppy3] question do all of you remember a couple years ago that we stated that just before the rv takes place we believe the stock market would take a dive. Well today was that largest drop in one day in years. And yesterday was reported as over 2oo point drop?? That is over 500 points in two days. Wow !!! Have you noticed that our congress and senate have not even mentioned a meeting on installing a budget for america and the first time in history our country has not operated on a budget in 5 plus years. Our politicians all know they have a safety net called dinar. I rest my case. Poppy3 do you feel as lied to by our representative ever. Truth would sure be nice. Question Chapter 7 ends before next tuesday, erbil to happen this week, kuwait to be paid by the 25th, and the rate being reported to be higher than we first thought. What more needs to be said . Good Evening, Family!

While we would all have liked to see this thing accomplished earlier -- and I've stuck my neck out with reporting information that indicated it would have already been done -- everything is still on track overall.

This IS a global event that has been unfolding during the past ten-plus years. The Basel III Protocols (which includes the Global Currency Reset) have required the cooperation of many nations -- 198, to be exact. That said, let me add a bit of perspective to all the unfolding events.

The fact that Iraq plays such an important role in this picture has caused everyone to be overly focused on just the events taking place in Iraq.

I need to remind everyone that -- beyond what we're seeing and having the opportunity to participate in with the IQD, the VND, the IDR, and other currencies -- this is something that is the result of God's promise to His people, and the fulfillment of prophecies made thousands of years ago.

We're in the middle of an event that is a once-in-history happening!

The last time a wealth transfer of this nature happened was when the wealth of Egypt was given over to the children of Israel when they departed for the Promised Land. The magnitude of what is happening now makes that pale by comparison!

We all tend to become extremely myopic when we're caught up in the minutiae of events over which we have no control. Many folks are hurting financially right now, I know, and that tends to sidetrack from the larger picture.

We ALL want this to be finished RIGHT NOW!! Frank and Delta both share what intel they have gathered, and then make an effort to put that intel into some perspective based on all the information they've accumulated.

Frank's latest gem concerning the VND, and the "East to West" movement of the GCR is a classic example.

Each of us has different sources of information and intel, some of which comes from individuals who are actually involved in the ongoing processes, some of which comes from folks on the periphery, and some which comes from others who analyze data they've collected.

I don't personally know Christine Lagarde, Jack Lew, Ben Bernanke, Dr. Shabibi, or any of the folks who are directly involved in the decision making processes -- and, for that matter, I think I'm accurate in saying that neither Frank nor Delta know any of these folks.

We each know people who are connected in some way to the unfolding processes. Delta is connected obviously within Iraq and has a grasp on facts that he can report from within the country.

Frank is connected not only to Delta but to others who have access to certain facts within Iraq as well as political sources in this country. KTFAlways has some of the most spectacular newshounds, like Walkingstick and Mary Cooper.

 For the most part I think we all agree in principle on the events that are unfolding and the timing involved. Differences that crop up are a product of our different sources and somewhat different perspectives, but any differences are relatively minor, and they shouldn't be treated as though we are somehow at odds with each other.

My contacts come partly from having been in the banking world, as well as having been active politically behind the scenes ever since the 1970's. More of my sources are connected within the financial realm, although I've been blessed to know people who either currently serve in government, or who have served and are still well-connected.

Speculation on what is going to happen just isn't my cup of tea, and it bothers me to report certain projected events that wind up not happening as I've been told. What I'm in possession of is a large body of facts and figures that relate to the global picture. I've seen, and am in possession of, legal documents that pertain to the unfolding processes and the target dates.

I've been given a brief glimpse of Iraq's 2013 budget, seen the numbers, and have done calculations on what the expected rate is for the budget year. We know the overall plan, and we know what the targets are for certain events to take place.

What gets in the way from time to time (as has just happened in the past few days) is political maneuvering and disagreements that delay things. The banking sources and political sources who provide me with information on a (mostly) daily basis endeavor to be as accurate in their reporting as possible, but because we are in a set of constantly changing dynamics, it makes assessing things and trying to put a date on things difficult.

I've already shared the rates that have been reported to me -- and those rates have not changed one iota. I have banking executives who have confirmed to me -- even within the past 24 hours -- that those rates are showing on foreign currency administrative screens awaiting a release command from the PTB.

What we're stuck with is a set of political issues and personal issues that affect some of the parties directly. Those things have created delays in the timing.

Frank has reported the 27th of June as the date for the ceremonial signing of the lifting of Chapter VII. If you've taken the time to read the original Chapter VII document on the IMF's website, you know that the IQD MUST have been restored to international status BEFORE the sanctions can be lifted.

It stands to reason, therefore, that sometime in the coming days -- and even possibly this weekend -- we ARE going to see the IQD, the VND, and the entire first basket of currencies released to the rest of the world. My intel puts a sense of immediacy to that event, along with the subsequent release of the next two baskets of currencies.

Nothing has changed as far as the target for all 198 currencies having been revalued/restructured/realigned by the 14th of October. The plan is still to see Baskets 1, 2 and 3 released with their new rates prior to, or by July 1.

Let's hope that things don't keep delaying so that we don't have an opportunity -- even a short one -- to purchase the Indonesian Rupiah.

No matter how this thing times out, we can rest assured that "This is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes!"

6-20-2013  Intel Guru Frank26    The CBI is showing the AoP and the UN that they can control their currency, a 30 drop in 2 hours shows control.  There has been a push to add value to the IQD, the push has created movement and they are going forward with increasing the value of the IQD.  June is the month we’re looking for RD and Qi cards; July we look for the RI; Aug-Sept we look for RV.  What has happened in the last 48 hours is AMAZING!  [post 2 of 2]

6-20-2013  Intel Guru Frank26  [via BulldogFord65]  the market rate is being controlled, but what is not being said is the market rate must be contained prior to the RV, the CBI needs to show they can control the rate...the CBI must instill confidence in the currency in their citizens so that they will make the RD a success; it does not work without the confidence of the citizens. the 30 point drop in the IQD in 2 hours yesterday – this is HUGE – they are controlling the market value of the IQD to get it as close as possible to 1000; 1000:1 is ideal for dropping the three zeros.
