Several pieces of the horrible collection of human parts collected by Nazi anatomy professor August Hirt have been discovered in France. They were apparently forgotten when most were buried in the wake of World War II. 

 

Hirt, an SS captain serving as head of the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Strasbourg during the occupation of the eastern French city by the Nazis, harvested remains of 86 victims of gassed in August 1943 in Natzweiler-Struthof Concentration Camp.

The macabre collection of corpses was meant to serve proof of Nazi’s racial theory as taught by the Ahnenerbe organization, demonstrating the anatomy of Jewish people. Jews were the majority of the anatomist’s victims, although there were a handful of Poles and Asians of disputed origin.

After Strasbourg was liberated by the Allies in November 1944, the bodies preserved in bins filled with distilled alcohol were found in Hirt’s lab. They were autopsied and eventually buried in a common grave at a local Jewish cemetery in 1946.

But on July 9, historian Raphael Toledano found that some of the remains were still at the institute, AFP reported on Saturday. He discovered several body parts, including a jar containing several skin fragments and test tubes containing the intestine and stomach of a victim.

"The labels identify each piece with precision and

mention the register 107969, which matches the number tattooed at the Auschwitz camp on the forearm of Menachem Taffel, one of the 86 victims," said the statement announcing the bodies' discovery.

Ironically, the body parts were preserved not by Hirt, but by a forensic professor from Strasbourg's medicine faculty, Camille Simonin, who was investigating the Nazi scientist’s crimes. They were taken during the autopsies of the collection as the medic was establishing the cause of the victim’s deaths for the military administration.

Toledano, who co-authored a documentary film on Hirt’s crimes, was given a clue to the location of the remains by one of Simonin’s letters written in 1952.

The newly-discovered remains are to be returned to the Jewish community of Strasbourg, where they will be interred along with the rest of the victims at the Cronenbourg cemetery.

In addition to the 86 people slaughtered to become Hirt’s exhibits, the Nazi professor harmed other prisoners, whom he used as test subjects in his chemical weapons experiments.  

 

Some 150 people became his victims in that way, with seven or eight recorded killed during the tests.
Hirt escaped the advancing Allied forces to southern Germany until June 1945, when he killed himself to avoid arrest and trial for war crimes.

German researchers have developed a new technology that can identify a person in poor lighting or even in absolute darkness thus potentially solving one of the main issues of the modern face recognition systems.

Today’s facial recognition systems are based on matching clean and well-lit photos taken in the broad light. This poses a problem for law enforcement and security services when their object is in the shade.
However, a group of German scientists claim to have found a solution to this as they develop a new type of face-recognition system that analyzes a person’s thermal signature instead of relying on traditional methods.
As a part of the new study, Saquib Sarfraz and Rainer Stiefelhagen, two computer scientists from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, created a system that analyzes mid-or-far-infrared images and matches them with the ordinary photos, thus allowing the people’s faces to be recognized. 
However, such matching also poses a challenge for computer systems as connection between human appearance in visible and infrared light is highly nonlinear. The way human face emits thermal signatures when infrared images are taken is absolutely different from the way the face reflects light during a regular photo session.
Additionally, thermal emissions vary depending on the environment temperature, temperature of the skin, person’s activity level or even a change of expression.
Besides, the images taken by infrared cameras usually have much lower resolution than normal photos. All these factors make the matching of two types of images a challenging task.
The research team managed to overcome this difficulty by using the so-called deep neural network system.
Deep neural network is a computer system designed to imitate the functioning of a human brain. It can make connections and draw conclusions based on complex sets of factors provided that a large enough dataset is available for the system.
However, such smart system still needs a vast bank of both infrared and visible light images allowing it to make comparisons and “learn.” For their study, German researchers used the University of Notre Dame set that contains a significant number of both types of images, including people shot with different facial expressions, under different lightning conditions and multiple images of the same person over a certain time period.
The data set used in the study consisted of 4.585 both infrared and visible light images of 82 people. For the research, the scientists divided the set into two parts and used the images of the first 41 people to “train” their system and the images of the rest 41 people to test it.
The results of the experiment showed that the new system considerably surpasses its existing counterparts. “The presented approach improves the state-of-the-art by more than 10 percent,” Sarfraz and Stiefelhagen said as quoted by the MIT Technology Review.
Additionally, the system is capable of matching the images and recognizing a face in just 35 milliseconds. “This is therefore, very fast and capable of running in real-time at about 28 fps,” the researchers say.
However, the development of the technology is only at the initial stages so it is far from perfect as its accuracy reaches only about 80% in case when the system has many visible light images in its database to compare to the thermal image. With only one visible image available, the accuracy of the system falls to 55%.

Classified emails that were transmitted on Hillary Clinton's private email server contained information that belonged to five different intelligence agencies.

The National Security Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the CIA each claimed data that appeared in emails sent to and from Clinton's server, according to McClatchy.

In a classified Benghazi-related email that was improperly made public May 22, the NSA, DIA and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency had information at stake, the report said.

The intelligence community's inspector general discovered five classified emails among a sample of just 40 he examined for possibly classified information. 

Clinton has said she turned over 33,000 personal emails to the State Department.

Along with State's inspector general, the intelligence community watchdog last week asked the Department of Justice to open an inquiry into whether Clinton mishandled classified data on a personal server — a federal crime.

The inspectors general have acknowledged that the batch of emails Clinton's legal team selected for State Department review could contain hundreds of classified records.

In fact, the pair of watchdogs argued in a July 14 memo "that it is more likely than not that information classified higher than secret is present in this collection."

Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, once again hammered Clinton Thursday for her private email use in the wake of the new revelations.

"Hillary Clinton's reckless attempt to skirt public records laws appears to have jeopardized our national security more than previously known," Priebus said.

"And with her claims about her handling of classified information on her secret email server going up in smoke, Hillary Clinton is once again showing why she cannot be trusted in the White House."
