Black Lives Matter (BLM) was created as a movement when the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag was created in 2013 in response to the George Zimmerman acquittal in the Trayvon Martin case.
Now James Simpson, an investigate journalist, has written a compelling piece for Accuracy in Media exposing the depth of connection between BLM and radical socialist and communist groups.
“This report examines in detail for the first time how communist groups have manipulated the cause of Black Lives Matter, and how money from liberal foundations has made it all possible,” Simpson writes. After the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag was created, radical-left activists Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opel Tometi took credit for the slogan and hastag. They all work for front groups of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO), one of the four largest radical-left organizations in the country.
According to Simpson, “FRSO is a hereditary descendant of the New Communist Movement, which was inspired by Mao and the many communist revolutions throughout the world in the 1960s and 1970s.”
He writes that FRSO membership is “disproportionately represented by blacks, gays, and women, and self-consciously emphasizes those issues.” Patrisse Cullors, a self-described “working class, queer, black woman,” led a chant at a 2015 Netroots Nation conference which stated: “If I die in police custody, burn everything down… rise the f–k up! That is the only way motherf–kers like you will listen!”
Simpson writes that “FRSO/BLM organizations are generously supported by a universe of wealthy foundations.”
Famous leftist billionaire George Soros has “provided over $30 million in seed money to groups affiliated with #BlackLivesMatter,” according to Red State.
Simpson concludes his article stating most supporters of BLM are unaware of the movement’s true mission.
“Many members of the black community would be shocked to learn that the intellectual godfathers of this movement are mostly white Communists, ‘queers,’ and leftist Democrats, intent on making blacks into cannon fodder for the revolution,” he says.
Obama delivered his final State of the Union address on Tuesday evening Jan 12 2016, and once again he played fast and loose with the truth in a number of statements. Of course, this is nothing new, as Obama has routinely used his SOTU speeches to spread a whole host of lies and half-truths.
Thankfully, somebody took the time to compile a video showing 140 different untruths told by the Obama in his previous SOTU addresses. What follows are just a handful of his biggest lies.
In
his 2009 address, Obama famously declared, “If your family makes less
than $250,000 a year, you will not see your taxes increased a single
dime."
In 2010, while touting his Obamacare health care reforms,
Obama proclaimed, “Our approach would preserve the right of Americans
who have insurance to keep their doctor and their plan. It would reduce
costs and premiums for millions of families and businesses." In
that same speech, Obama also said, “We will continue to go through the
budget, line by line, to eliminate programs that we can’t afford and
don’t work."
The 2011 speech was populated with quite a few lies, including “When we find rules that put an unnecessary burden on businesses, we will fix them,” and, “The health insurance law we passed last year will slow these rising costs."
2012 included such whoppers as “I’m directing my administration to open more than 75 percent of our potential offshore oil and gas resources,” and, “I’ve ordered every federal agency to eliminate rules that don’t make sense."
In the 2013 speech, Obama proudly yet prematurely proclaimed, “By the end of next year, our war in Afghanistan will be over,” which ironically was followed by the doozy, “Our government shouldn’t make promises we cannot keep — but must keep the promises we’ve already made."
Obama declared in 2014 that “I will act on my own to slash bureaucracy,” along with the laughable, “Let’s do more to help the entrepreneurs and small business owners who create most new jobs in America."
2015’s speech was also chock-full of lies and half- truths, including Obama’s claim regarding his supposed efforts against the Islamic State group in which he said, “We are leading a broad coalition, including Arab nations, to degrade and ultimately destroy this terrorist group.”
However, the biggest lie of them all in 2015 was Obama saying, “I commit to every Republican here tonight that I will not only seek out your ideas, I will seek to work with you to make this country stronger.”
Obama has only a passing acquaintanceship with the truth, as revealed by the many misleading statements and outright lies he has told, just in his State of the Union speeches.

CITY SQUEEZES FAMILY IN COURT FOR $8 MILLION TO CLOSE THEIR FAMILY'S BUSINESS !! Lawsuit challenges demand as unconstitutional taking of private property
The city of Palo Alto, California, wants a court to dismiss a lawsuit opposing its demand that the family owners of a mobile home park pay some $8 million for permission to close it down!
Lawyers for the park owners say they are just asking for the “courthouse doors [to] remain open for people, like the Jissers, to make their case when the government wrongfully takes their property.”
As WND reported, the Pacific Legal Foundation filed the case on behalf of the owners of the Buena Vista mobile home park. The owners want to close their business, but with a local median housing price of $2.46 million, the city demands that the tenants be compensated so they can find another place to live.
“No one should be forced to carry on a business that they want to close,” said PLF Attorney Larry Salzman in a statement. “The city is treating the Jissers as an ATM to solve a problem they didn’t cause – the lack of affordable housing in Palo Alto. That’s not just wrong, it’s unconstitutional.”

Salzman, in a blog post, explained the family's patriarch, Tim Jisser, is retiring and so the family wants out of the business. "The city says the money is needed so that the tenants can get expensive alternative housing in the area; in effect, the city is holding the Jissers uniquely responsible for solving the city's severe housing affordability problem. That's not just wrong, it's unconstitutional."
He said that instead of answering the Jissers' complaint, the city "has done what governments typically do: it's trying to avoid judgment by asking the court to toss out the case. The city's motion to dismiss doesn't deny that the city is commanding a payment of $8 million, or that it won't grant the Jissers a permit unless they pay it," he said. 'It just says the case shouldn't be heard by a judge yet; or that it's too late to hear it; or that it should be heard by a state judge instead of a federal judge. In short, the city has said anything and everything it can say in an attempted retreat from actually defending what it is in fact doing to the Jissers."
When the case was filed, it alleged violations of the U.S. Constitution's Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment limitations on taking private property for public use. It also alleges violation of a California law prohibiting conditions on the closure of mobile home parks that "exceed the reasonable costs of relocation" of a park’s tenants, the claim said.
The family moved to the U.S. in the 1970s and purchased the site in 1986. Their son, Joe, who manages the site said in a statement released by PLF: "My parents came here as immigrants with nothing and built a successful business. They were pursuing the American dream. But now the city is trampling on the promise of freedom that drew them to this land."
He said his family "has worked hard for 30 years to provide safe and affordable housing here. Now we're told by the city that providing that service is not enough, that we have to pay a staggering amount of money just to close our business," he said. "It's not fair for the city to force us to pay our tenants millions of dollars as the price of my parents' retirement."
A statement emailed to WND from the city was attributed to Palo Alto Attorney Molly Stump. "We are confident that the city followed both state law and the process that is set out in our own municipal ordinance related to the closing of the Buena Vista Mobile Home Park," she said. "There is no merit to these claims."

However, The New York Times reported that Obama never did teach constitutional law but a rather focused study of race, rights and gender.
While Obama did cover “due process and equal protection areas of constitutional law,” his most original course covered racism and law. In this course, Obama “improvised” his own textbook to include cases like Brown v. Board of Education, essays by Frederick Douglass, W. E. B. Dubois, Malcolm X and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., according to The Times.
Former students stated Obama was “especially eager” for them to understand the “horrors of the past.” Part of his assignments included a 1919 catalog of lynching victims who endured rape and the cutting off of ears and fingers. In one class on race, he mocked the way white people talked. “Why are your friends at the housing projects shooting each other?” he asked, according to The Times.
A favorite theme for Obama, according to Salil Mehra, a law professor at Temple University, included the "values andcultural touchstones that Americans share.” Naturally, liberals were attracted to the classes of this “progressive politician who backed child care subsidies and laws against racial profiling” and who even expressed skepticism in a 1996 about president Bill Clinton’s attempts to “reach across the aisle.”
Some things never change. Obama has always been elusive because if anyone knew exactly how he felt about the prickly issues of race and constitutional rights in particular, he would never have made it as far as he has. His past reveals a favoritism toward these issues and his executive actions certainly speak louder than his words, which we now know we cannot rely upon.

How Big Oil Conquered the World
Big Oil — An Industry Founded on Treachery and Deceit
As noted by Corbett, certain details of the Big Oil story are well known. Others are more obscure. The story begins in rural New York state in the early 19th century, with William Avery Rockefeller, an authentic "snake oil salesman" going by the fictional name of "Dr. Bill Livingston."
While neither a doctor nor a cancer specialist, Rockefeller, aka "Dr. Livingston," aka "Devil Bill," traveled the country's back roads conning people into buying his "Rock Oil" tonic for cancer — "a useless mixture of laxative and petroleum that had no effect whatsoever," according to Corbett.
William Avery Rockefeller fathered numerous children with three women, and took the name Livingston after being indicted for rape in 1849. One of those children was John D. Rockefeller, who became the world's first billionaire after founding Standard Oil.
As noted by Corbett:
"When he wasn't running away from them or disappearing for years at a time, [William Avery Rockefeller] would teach his children the tricks of his treacherous trade. He once bragged of his parenting technique: 'I cheat my boys every chance I get. I want to make 'em sharp' ... The world we live in today is the world created in 'Devil' Bill's image. It's a world founded on treachery, deceit, and the naïveté of a public that has never wised up to the parlor tricks that the Rockefellers and their ilk have been using to shape the world for the past century and a half."
The Birth of the Oil Industry
Another character with a similarly dubious background is "Colonel" Edwin Drake, an unemployed railroad conductor who managed to secure himself a job with the Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company after running into the founders, George Bissell and James Townsend, at a hotel.
The title "Colonel" was bestowed on him by Bissell and Townsend, who thought it might help him "win the respect of the locals" as he went about the company's business, collecting Seneca oil, which the company distilled into kerosene (lamp oil).
His mission was to collect enough Seneca oil to make the business profitable — a task that turned out to be more difficult than expected, as mere gallons could be collected using the standard collection methods.
Eventually, he tried drilling through the shale bedrock to reach greater reservoirs of oil, and on August 28, 1859 — literally the day he'd used up the last of his funds — the oil began to flow from the ground. And with that, a new industry was born. It didn't take long before homes and factories around the world were using lamp oil refined from crude, and prospectors from around the country flocked to Pennsylvania in search of the "black gold."
Among them was John D. Rockefeller, a Cleveland bookkeeper who, according to Corbett, had two ambitions in life: "To make $100,000 and to live to 100 years old." With a $1,000 loan from his father, "Devil Bill," John D. Rockefeller set off to make his fortune.
The Standard Oil Monopoly
After a series of partnerships and mergers over a seven-year period, John D. Rockefeller eventually incorporated Standard Oil of Ohio in 1870. According to the report:
"The next year, he quietly put what he called 'our plan' — his campaign to dominate the volatile oil industry — into devastating effect. Rockefeller knew that the refiner with the lowest transportation cost could bring rivals to their knees.
He entered into a secret alliance with the railroads, called the South Improvement Company. In exchange for large, regular shipments, Rockefeller and his allies secured transport rates far lower than those of their bewildered competitors.
Ida Tarbell, the daughter of an oil man, later remembered how men like her father struggled to make sense of events: 'An uneasy rumor began running up and down the Oil Regions,' she wrote.
'Freight rates were going up. … Moreover … all members of the South Improvement Company — a company unheard of until now — were exempt. … On every lip there was but one word and that was 'conspiracy.'"
By the time he was 40, John D. Rockefeller controlled 90 percent of the global oil refineries. Within another few years (early 1880s), he also controlled 90 percent of the marketing of oil, and one-third of all oil wells. His power and influence cannot be overstated at this point.
He had an international monopoly on what was to become the most important commodity in the world economy.
Following in Rockefeller's footsteps were a handful of other wealthy families, including the Nobels, the Rothschilds, the Dutch Royal family, and millionaire William Knox D'arcy, who was the first to strike oil in Persia.
These early "oil barons" became enormously wealthy. And as billions of people became increasingly dependent on oil for virtually every aspect of life, they gained tremendous power and influence.
However, oil could have been replaced by other resources, were it not for the shrewd manipulation by these early "oiligarchs."
The Death of the Electric Car, and Other Lucky Breaks
The advent of the electric light bulb took a good chunk out of the lamp oil market and temporarily threatened the oil monopoly. But lamp oil was quickly replaced by the need for gasoline to run the two-stroke internal combustion engine, invented by German engineer Karl Benz.
In 1888, Benz Motorwagen became the first commercially available automobile, and with that, the petroleum industry's profits were again secured. But even then their ongoing monopoly was not guaranteed. The first electric car had been built in 1884, and by 1897, electric cars were gaining popularity in London. In the early 20th century, 28 percent of cars sold in the U.S. were also electric. As noted by Corbett:
"The electrics had advantages over the internal combustion engine: they required no gear shifting or hand cranking, and had none of the vibration, smell or noise associated with gasoline-powered cars. Lady Luck intervened again on January 10, 1901, when prospectors struck oil at Spindletop in East Texas.
The gusher blew 100,000 barrels a day and set off the next great oil boom, providing cheap, plentiful oil to the American market and driving down gas prices. It wasn't long before the expensive, low range electric engines were abandoned altogether and big, loud, gas-guzzling engines came to dominate the road ..."
Interestingly, the event that made John D. Rockefeller into the world's first billionaire was supposed to rein in his unbridled power. He'd come under intense scrutiny as his wealth increased and, on May 15, 1911, the U.S. Supreme Court declared Standard Oil a monopoly "in restraint of trade" and ordered its dissolution.
But by dissolving the company into multiple entities, shares of Standard Oil tripled in value, and in a few short years, Rockefeller's worth equaled nearly 2 percent of the total U.S. economy.
"For the oiligarchy, the lesson of the rise and rise of Rockefeller was obvious: the more ruthlessly that monopoly was pursued, the tighter that control was grasped, the greater the lust for power and money, the greater the reward would be in the end. From now on, no invention would derail the oil majors from their quest for total control. No competition would be tolerated. No threat to the oiligarchs would be allowed to rise."
The Continued Squashing of Competition
While the electric car had been successfully eliminated, thereby securing Big Oil profits, another competing resource was on the horizon: alcohol.
Henry Ford designed his Model T automobile to run on either gasoline or alcohol, stating that just about anything that could be fermented could be used for fuel, predicting the future of fuel was wide open to a number of alternatives. However, the oil industry succeeded in eliminating the competition yet again, this time by supporting the anti-alcohol movements and the formation of the Prohibition Party in 1869.
While Rockefeller avoided alcohol, his chief concern was not to uphold morality in the U.S. The prohibition served his agenda by creating burdensome restrictions on ethanol producers, and as ethanol became more costly, its attraction as an alternate fuel ceased.
Also, as detailed in my previous article about Clair Patterson's fight to eliminate leaded gasoline, once the high compression engine was invented, car manufacturers started running into performance problems. General Motors diagnosed the problem, realizing that the problem originated with the fuel. General Motors tried about 15,000 different combinations of elements to find a solution to the engine knocking.

Adding benzene from coal to gasoline was found to work. Ditto for adding grain alcohol. Adding 10 percent alcohol to gasoline raised the quality of the fuel, causing less knocking in the engine. It also had other benefits, including clean combustion, which eliminated soot emissions, and increased horsepower without engine knocking.
But as research continued, General Motors determined that adding lead to the gasoline produced "an ideal anti-knock fuel" — ideal mostly because manufacturing the lead additive, tetraethyl lead, would allow them to make the greatest profits. Were they to add alcohol to the gasoline, the oil industry stood to lose a large amount of petroleum sales, anywhere from 10 to 20 percent, depending on how much alcohol was added.
By adding lead, the oil industry had a product it could again control in its entirety. So Standard Oil partnered with General Motors, creating a joint corporation known as Ethyl Corporation. Leaded gasoline became the norm, and over the next 80 years, countless people were sickened and harmed by this neurotoxic fuel additive, thrust upon the people for no other reason than it created the greatest profits.
Big Oil Secretly Buys Up and Dismantles Public Transportation System
In 1936, Standard Oil and General Motors also took part in the reformation of public transportation. Only 10 percent of Americans owned a car, and most city dwellers relied on electric trolley networks. By replacing the electric streetcars with gasoline-guzzling buses, the oil industry secured an even greater foothold within the U.S. economy. As detailed in Corbett's report:
"The cartel had been careful to hide their involvement in National City Lines, but it was revealed to the public in 1946 by ... Edwin J. Quinby ... He uncovered the oiligarchs' stock ownership of National City Lines and its subsidiaries and detailed how they had step by step bought up and destroyed the public transportation lines in Baltimore, Los Angeles, St. Louis and other major urban centres...
[I]n 1947 National City Lines was indicted for conspiring to form a transportation monopoly and conspiring to monopolize sales of buses and supplies. In 1949, GM, Firestone, Standard Oil of California and their officers and corporate associates were convicted on the second count of conspiracy.
The punishment for buying up and dismantling America's public transportation infrastructure? A $5,000 fine. H. C. Grossman, who had been the director of Pacific City Lines when it oversaw the scrapping of LA's $100 million Pacific Electric system, was fined exactly $1."
Next came the undermining of the railway system. In 1953, General Motor President Charles Wilson was appointed Secretary of Defense, and Wilson, along with Francis DuPont, Chief Administrator of Federal Highways, set into motion the largest public works project in U.S. history with the creation of the interstate highway system.
As a result, railway travel declined by 84 percent between 1945 and 1964, while private car ownership soared, and along with it, gasoline sales, which rose 300 percent in that same time frame. Similar social engineering feats took place in Europe, further securing the future of the oil business as a primary force to be reckoned with.
The report also goes into the details behind the gas shortages that sent the U.S. into a financial tailspin in the early 1970s, revealing how the secretive Bilderberg Group, created by Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands in 1954, successfully created a new financial system based on the petrodollar — a system that granted the oiligarchs unprecedented control over the economy.
The Rockefeller Transformation
In his day, John D. Rockefeller was a despised man. This all changed when he hired Ivy Ledbetter Lee, who essentially invented the public relations industry as we now know it. John D. was filmed handing out dimes to the poor, and was publicly portrayed as a kind and warm-hearted man. While hokey by today's standards, such simple stunts worked. Yet, Rockefeller needed to go even further to truly gain the public's trust.
As Corbett notes:
"In order to win the public over, he was going to have to give them what they wanted. And what they wanted wasn't difficult to understand: money. But just as his father, Devil Bill, had taught him to do in all his business dealings, Rockefeller made sure to get the better end of the bargain. He would 'donate' his great wealth to the creation of public institutions, but those institutions would be used to bend society to his will.
As every would-be ruler throughout history has realized, society has to be transformed from the ground up. Americans in the 19th century still prized education and intellectual pursuits ... with a remarkable 93 to 100 percent literacy rate.
Before the first compulsory schooling laws in Massachusetts in 1852, education was private and decentralized, and as a result ... a solid grounding in history and science was widespread. But a nation of individuals who could think for themselves was an anathema to the monopolists. The oiligarchs needed a mass of obedient workers..."
The Takeover of Education
John D. Rockefeller's first great act of charity was the establishment of the University of Chicago, followed later by a $180 million donation to the establishment of the General Education Board. But contrary to what you might think, these acts of generosity were not to further education, but to control and impoverish it.
Frederick Taylor Gates became a trusted ally, and in "The Country School of Tomorrow," Gates lays out Rockefeller's plan for the education of future Americans:
"In our dream, we have limitless resources, and the people yield themselves with perfect docility to our molding hand. The present educational conventions fade from our minds; and, unhampered by tradition, we work our own good will upon a grateful and responsive folk. We shall not try to make these people or any of their children into philosophers or men of learning or science.
We are not to raise up from among them authors, orators, poets, or men of letters. We shall not search for embryo great artists, painters, musicians. Nor will we cherish even the humbler ambition to raise up from among them lawyers, doctors, preachers, politicians, statesmen, of whom we now have ample supply."
The Effective Strategy That Eliminated Natural Medicine
Other oil-backed schemes to mold and reshape the American education system followed, including a scheme to alter the teaching of American history to promote a view of collectivism, as well as a program culminating in the transformation of the practice of medicine.
Naturopathic-based herbal medicine was the norm, and Rockefeller set out to shift the medical industry toward using oil-derived pharmaceuticals. To this end, the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research was established in 1901, headed up by Simon Flexner.
"His brother, Abraham, was an educator who was contracted by the Carnegie Foundation to write a report on the state of the American medical education system. His study, 'The Flexner Report,' along with the hundreds of millions of dollars that the Rockefeller and Carnegie Foundations were to shower on medical research in the coming years, resulted in a sweeping overhaul of the American medical system. Naturopathic and homeopathic medicine, medical care focused on unpatentable, uncontrollable natural remedies and cures was now dismissed as quackery; only drug-based allopathic medicine requiring expensive medical procedures and lengthy hospital stays was to be taken seriously ...
The fortunes of Carnegie, Morgan and Rockefeller financed surgery, radiation and synthetic drugs. They were to become the economic foundations of the new medical economy ... The oiligarchy birthed entire medical industries from their own research centers and then sold their own products from their own petrochemical companies as the 'cure.'"
The Takeover of America's Financial System and the Creation of a Food Monopoly
The financial power of these oil industry giants is by now near-unfathomable, but the aim was to control the entire financial system. This was effectively accomplished with the creation of the Federal Reserve, established in 1913 following a secret meeting on Jekyll Island, during which the details were ironed out. Attendants at this meeting included John D. Rockefeller Jr.'s father-in-law, Senator Nelson Aldrich, and various banking representatives.
Later, in the 1950s, James Stillman Rockefeller, the grandson of John D.'s brother, became the head of National City Bank, while David Rockefeller, John D.'s grandson, took over Chase Manhattan Bank. Still, they were not satisfied.
"Springboarding from success to success as they consolidated monopolies across every field of human activity, the oiligarchs' ambitions became even larger. This time, their goal was to consolidate control over the very food supply of the world itself, and once again they would use philanthropy as the cover for their business takeover," Corbett explains.
The Rockefeller Foundation funded the Green Revolution that led to the introduction of petroleum-based agricultural chemicals, which quickly transformed agriculture, both in the U.S. and abroad. President Lyndon Johnson's "Food for Peace" program actually mandated the use of petroleum-dependent technologies and chemicals by aid recipients, and countries that could not afford it were granted loans from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The "Gene Revolution" was next, and as noted by Corbett:
"The players involved in this 'Gene Revolution' are almost identical to the players in the Green Revolution, with I.G. Farben offshoots Bayer CropScience and BASF Plant Science mingling with traditional oiligarch associate companies like Dow AgroScience, DuPont Biotechnology and, of course, Monsanto, all funded by the Rockefeller Foundation ..."

In his usual style, Corbett manages to squeeze in an incredible amount of information in as compact a timeframe as is humanly possible, and I highly recommend taking the time to watch the video in full. What I've included here is but a summary overview of the many details he brings forth in this fascinating report.
Those who are ignorant of history are bound to repeat it, and if this story tells us anything, it is that unless we realize what has been done, we'll be deceived again and again, because the oil oligarchy's end game is yet to be realized — if we let them. As Corbett notes in closing:
"The takeover of education, of medicine, of the monetary system, of the food supply itself, showed that the aim was much greater than a mere oil monopoly: it was the quest to monopolize all aspects of life, to erect the perfect system of control over every aspect of society, every sector from which any threat of competition to their power could emerge ... But the oiligarchs are not done yet. Their next project, launched in the late 20th century, is almost too ambitious to be comprehended ... It is about the monopolization of life itself. They have spent decades preparing the path for this takeover and marshaled their mind-boggling resources in service of the task. And the vast majority of the world's population, still playing the shell game that the oiligarchs perfected and abandoned long ago, are about to fall right into their hands yet again."
PAPER SAYS GOVERNMENTS NEED TO PREPARE FOR CATASTROPHES LIKE YELLOWSTONE ERUPTION

It’s long been known that if the Yellowstone supervolcano were to erupt at full force the loss of life would be substantial and the effects on the world’s climate would be disastrous — water sources would be fouled, crops would fail, many people would die directly and indirectly.
In an international report that has recently captured headlines, scientists have attempted to quantify the threat of such catastrophes while also urging governments worldwide to collaborate on investment in scientific research to better prepare the world in hopes of lessening the impacts of such a calamity.
“I think the paper and its contents are very valuable,” said Bob Smith, a University of Utah researcher who has long studied the geodynamics of Yellowstone, even if certain websites tend to sensationalize the findings to the “point of annoyance.”
The warnings and recommendations are contained in “Extreme Geohazards: Reducing the Disaster Risk and Increasing Resilience.” The report was supported by the European Science Foundation and included an international cast of authors with expertise in such diverse fields as economics, health and earth sciences.
“It’s one of the only reports I’ve ever seen that takes a geologic perspective in thinking about hazards,” said Jake Lowenstern, a research geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey and scientist-in-charge of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory.
Natural disasters
In recent decades, the United States has suffered its share of natural disasters. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 caused an estimated $40 billion in damage and killed almost 2,000 people, and it was narrowly confined.
Volcanic eruptions, on the other hand, especially ones the size of the Yellowstone supervolcano’s last explosion, would far exceed anything modern humans have experienced, the researchers contend.
The worst, most recent volcanic eruption took place in 1815 in Tambora, Indonesia, leading to the deaths of 92,000 people. That eruption was given a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 7, one being the least explosive. Mount St. Helens in Washington state was rated VEI 5 and killed 57 people.
In contrast, the latest Yellowstone volcanic eruption was a VEI 8 and occurred about 640,000 years ago. Another VEI 8 occurred about 74,000 years ago in Toba, Indonesia, and killed an estimated 60 percent of the population. If such an eruption were to occur now with a much more populated Earth, the authors write ominously, it “could return humanity to a pre-civilisation state. It’s sobering,” Lowenstern said.
Smith said the probability of Yellowstone’s volcano erupting in any year is extremely low, less than .00014 percent. “Since the last large eruptions, there have been 50 to 70 smaller eruptions contained primarily in the Yellowstone caldera,” he said, and more than a dozen small hydrothermal eruptions occur every year. “You look at that and ask: Are we truly overdue, or has the volcanism pattern changed?”

The paper’s authors contend that more attention should be focused on forecasting and preparing for such a cataclysmic event. Smith agreed. “Most of the big volcanoes around the world are not monitored,” he said.
Yellowstone’s volcano is an exception. Smith has been at the forefront of installing better monitoring tools around the volcano, including 35 seismographs, 45 GPS stations to detect horizontal and vertical displacement and even five seismographs installed in the ground. The monitoring has been largely funded by the National Science Foundation and U.S. Geological Survey.
“We have a big network in Yellowstone,” Smith said. “We’ve worked really hard on redundancy” to get information out of Yellowstone should certain communication means, like phone lines, fail.
Measured in lives
The importance of monitoring volcanoes can be measured in lives, the international researchers claim. Although exact figures are debated, the 1918-1919 Spanish flu has been credited with the deaths of between 21 million and 50 million people. A VEI 8 eruption has the potential to dwarf that death toll, the authors write. “ … volcanic eruption could easily kill (through the many indirect effects, in particular, food scarcity) a higher percentage of the global population than the Spanish Flu if it occurred without any global preparation effort.”
“The problem with geologic events is that they happen so rarely that people don’t really think about an earthquake or volcanic feature, so they brush it off,” Smith said. “When one hits, it’s an enormous stress on a population. If you don’t prepare and mitigate, that’s when you get the greatest loss of human life.”
Smith said humans around the world are reliant on their governments and politicians to prepare for extreme disasters because, although scientists may not be able to forecast when an earthquake or volcanic explosion will occur, there is a wealth of knowledge about the effects of such catastrophes.
“It should be a wake-up call to those who read it and can make decisions,” Lowenstern said. “It’s a very credible job that they’ve done looking long-term at global-scale risks."
The paper also points out that because of the increase in the world’s population and its many interconnections through global trade, large disasters can have effects far beyond a specific region.
“Preparedness has gotten more imperative because the Earth has gotten a hell of a lot smaller,” Smith said.
How the State Department Caved to Hillary Clinton’s Lawyer on Classified Emails

Clinton’s private lawyer got his way when he pushed back after being asked to delete all copies of a classified email—a level of deference an expert calls ‘far from the norm.’
The State Department put up virtually no resistance when Hillary Clinton’s private lawyer requested to keep copies of her emails—even though those emails contained classified information, and even though it was unclear whether the attorney was cleared to see such secrets.
Experts on the handling of classified information tell The Daily Beast that the seemingly chummy arrangement between Clinton’s lawyer and her former State Department aides was “quite unusual.”
Newly released documents, obtained by The Daily Beast in coordination with the James Madison Project under the Freedom of Information Act, include legal correspondence and internal State Department communications about Clinton’s emails. Those documents provide new details about how officials tried to accommodate the former secretary of state and presidential candidate.
In May 2015, a senior State Department official informed Clinton’s lawyer, David Kendall, that government reviewers had found at least one classified email among the messages she sent using a private account, which she used exclusively while in office. That email was only part of the “first tranche” of the review, a State Department employee noted at the time, leaving open the possibility that more classified information would be found, which it was.
Patrick F. Kennedy, the undersecretary of state for management, who had worked under Clinton, asked Kendall to delete all electronic copies of the message in his possession. (Copies were sent to the State Department.)
But Kendall resisted, saying he needed a full record of his own of the 55,000 pages of emails Clinton had sent, in order to respond to information requests from a House committee investigating the 2012 attacks on U.S. officials in Benghazi, Libya, and from the inspectors general of the State Department and the intelligence agencies.
“I therefore do not believe it would be prudent to delete” the email from the “master copies” that Kendall’s firm was maintaining, he wrote.
There is no indication that Kennedy, who oversees physical and information security for the State Department, protested the private lawyer’s position or tried further to persuade Kendall to delete the classified email. The message had been forwarded to Clinton by one of her senior aides, Jacob Sullivan, in November 2012 and contained references to the attack in Benghazi two months earlier.
Rather, within a few days, State Department employees were told to develop a system that would let Kendall keep the emails in a State Department-provided safe at his law firm in Washington, D.C., where he and a partner had access to them. “The arrangement with Kendall was far from the norm,” Steven Aftergood, an expert on classification and security policy at the Federation of American Scientists, told The Daily Beast. “There are a number of attorneys around who handle clients and cases involving classified information. They are almost never allowed to retain classified material in their office, whether they have a safe or not. Sometimes they are not even allowed to review the classified information, even if they are cleared for it, because an agency will say they don’t have a ‘need to know.’ In any event, the deference shown to Mr. Kendall by the State Department was quite unusual.”
As early as May 2015, Kendall had been made aware that at least one email in Clinton’s archives included classified information. But that didn’t become public knowledge for some time, and when the Clinton campaign became aware of it is unclear.
As late as July 1, Clinton campaign spokeswoman Karen Finney was pushing back against the notion, telling MSNBC that “the assumption that there was classified information being communicated on this BlackBerry I think has been shown in these emails to just be simply untrue.”

Kendall did not respond to requests for comment. Brian Fallon, a Clinton campaign spokesman, noted that Kendall had an obligation to retain the former secretary’s emails in order to respond to various government inquiries. “David Kendall was adhering to a preservation request from the FBI, State Department inspector general, and the House Select Committee on Benghazi,” Fallon told The Daily Beast.
State Department spokesperson John Kirby defended the government’s actions. “The State Department takes the protection of sensitive information seriously,” Kirby told The Daily Beast, noting that Kendal had told the department that her emails were still subject to preservation requests. “Accordingly, the department provided Secretary Clinton’s lawyers with instructions on physically securing the documents while additional options were under discussion." But a spokesperson for the committee investigating the Benghazi attacks was unpersuaded that the arrangement was appropriate.
“Perhaps if Secretary Clinton had turned her server over to an independent, neutral third-party, such as the State Department Inspector General or the Archivist of the Unites States as the Benghazi Committee suggested when it first uncovered her unusual email arrangement, perhaps the damage to our national security would be less than it is now,” Jamal Ware, a spokesperson for the committee, told The Daily Beast.
The FBI, not the Benghazi committee, is examining the classification issues related to Clinton’s personal email account. The arrangement with Kendall has been previously reported. But the documents reveal new details about what was happening inside the State Department as officials moved ahead with the unorthodox setup.
At one point, a State Department lawyer questioned whether Kendall or one of his associates, Katherine Turner, was qualified to receive and maintain classified information. “Do any of the lawyers have TS [top secret] clearances,” Sarah Prosser, a legal adviser at State, asked colleagues in an email in August 2015, after more classified material had been found in Clinton’s emails.
It’s not clear from the emails, portions of which are heavily redacted, what the answer was, but Kendall later said he and Turner did have a top secret-level clearance, given to him previously by the State Department as part of his work representing Clinton before the Benghazi committee. There’s no indication of what legal review State undertook to verify that or determine whether the arrangement was acceptable.
Top secret clearances don’t necessarily entitle someone to all classified information. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) later questioned whether there may have been information in the emails for which Kendall and Turner didn’t have the appropriate clearances, including so-called compartmented information that is derived from some of the most highly classified intelligence-collecting systems in the U.S. government.
The internal State Department correspondence also shows that security officials intended to install a safe and records-keeping system that was suitable only up to the secret level, a lower designation than top secret. Kendall has long argued, particularly in correspondence with lawmakers, that the emails in his possession were not originally classified and were only deemed so after they were reviewed by government auditors.
One internal email shows that the State Department shared that assessment. “In the first tranche of emails there was one that was subsequently classified,” an executive assistant at State told Gregory Starr, the assistant secretary for diplomatic security, in an email recounting the exchanges between Kennedy and Kendall.
Starr was asked to appoint someone from State’s diplomatic security bureau to go to Kendall’s law firm, Williams & Connolly, “to do a thorough security review to include physical security of area/safe in which document/electronic versions are being kept, who has access to the area/safe, do those individuals have appropriate clearances…”
It’s not clear from the documents what reviews took place. The question of whether Kendall should be allowed to keep classified email received new scrutiny in July 2015, after investigators found additional Clinton emails that they thought contained classified information. At the time, Grassley said that at least two emails contained “top secret, sensitive compartmented information.” Investigators found that Clinton’s emails contained information from at least five intelligence agencies.
Kendall gave the thumb drive to the Justice Department on Aug. 6 and gave copies to the FBI. The internal State Department emails show employees reacting to news that the FBI had taken possession of the thumb drive as well as a server in Clinton’s home in Chappaqua, New York, and that some of the emails were said to contain classified information. On Aug. 11, a State press officer sent around clips of news articles, noting that “this is breaking widely” and providing a brief summary. The nearly 20 recipients included press staff, a senior attorney, and Kennedy.
Prosser, the State Department attorney who’d asked whether Kendall and Turner had proper security clearances, forwarded the email to other attorneys and department security personnel, including some of those she’d been corresponding with about the clearance question.
While State Department officials initially may have felt that non-government lawyers were qualified to maintain classified emails at their office, they changed their tune as investigators began to discover more top secret information among Clinton’s communications.
In late July, as the FBI was preparing to take possession of the thumb drive, Kennedy wrote to lawyers for three of Clinton’s top aides—Sullivan, Philippe Reines, and Huma Abedin—asking them to turn over “all copies of potential federal records” in their clients’ possession.
Kennedy acknowledged that the aides (like Kendall) might need access to the records in order to respond to congressional inquiries and other investigations. The State Department was more than happy to give them access, Kennedy said. They just had to show up at department headquarters during normal business hours and read them there.

Amanda Gailey, associate professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and nine other members of 'Nebraskans Against Gun Violence' were invited by Obama to attend this week’s speech at Baxter Arena in Omaha, Nebraska. Obama used the town hall event to talk about gun control, the 10 executive orders he signed that redefine a gun “dealer” to include many private citizens, and other policies he will push before leaving office. Roughly 8,000 people attended the event.
“I think it’s just wonderful that Obama has made this a policy priority,” Gailey told JournalStar.com on Tuesday. “I hope that it results in bringing this issue to the forefront of the political conversation in our state as the legislative session begins.”
The website BizPac Review examined the professors Facebook page on Thursday, which revealed a “f–k”-laced rant aimed at Ohio cops.
The outburst came on the same day a grand jury cleared two Cleveland, Ohio, police officers of the November 2014 fatal shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice.
Officer Timothy Loehmann shot the boy, who brandished an Airsoft replica of a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun, after exiting his vehicle.
Officer Loehmann was not told by radio personnel that Rice was a juvenile or that the gun may be a toy.
“F–k the racists who think black children look like adults. F–k a legal and police system that allows grown white men to pose with sniper rifles on a universitiy campus or in a grocery store and allows insurrectionists to train guns on government agents with no consequences but sounds the alarms when a black child is carrying a toy gun,” said Gailey Dec. 28.
“F–k police officers who undertook a job that carries inherent risk but think any perceived threat to them whatsoever justifies instantaneous lethal force.”

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty held a news conference after the grand jury’s decision was announced. He called the events leading up to Rice’s death a “perfect storm of human error, mistakes and miscommunications by all involved that day,” Reuters reported.
Rice’s family has filed a civil lawsuit over the boy’s death.
