Pipeline Protesters to Defy Deadline

AFTER MAJOR VICTORY, PIPELINE PROTESTORS TO DEFY DEADLINE

The Army Corps of Engineers refused Sunday to grant Energy Transfer Partners permission to extend the pipeline beneath a Missouri River reservoir.

Protesters celebrated a major victory in their push to reroute the Dakota Access oil pipeline away from a tribal water source but pledged to remain camped on federal land in North Dakota anyway, despite Monday's government deadline to leave.

Hundreds of people at the Oceti Sakowin, or Seven Council Fires, encampment cheered and chanted "mni wichoni" — "water is life" in Lakota Sioux — after the Army Corps of Engineers refused Sunday to grant the company permission to extend the pipeline beneath a Missouri River reservoir.

The Standing Rock Sioux tribe and its supporters argue that extending the project beneath Lake Oahe would threaten the tribe's water source and cultural sites. The segment is the last major sticking point for the four-state, $3.8 billion project.

"The whole world is watching," said Miles Allard, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux. "I'm telling all our people to stand up and not to leave until this is over."

Despite the deadline, authorities say they won't forcibly remove the protesters.

The company constructing the pipeline, Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners, released a statement Sunday night slamming the Army Corps' decision as politically motivated and alleging that President Obama's administration was determined to delay the matter until he leaves office.

"The White House's directive today to the Corps for further delay is just the latest in a series of overt and transparent political actions by an administration which has abandoned the rule of law in favor of currying favor with a narrow and extreme political constituency," the company said.

President-elect Donald Trump, a pipeline supporter who has reportedly invested in both Energy Transfer Partners and another company involved with the pipeline, will take office in January, although it wasn't immediately clear what steps his administration would be able to take to reverse the Army Corps' latest decision or how quickly that could happen.

"The irony is they sent Native Americans out on these reservations to perish, only to find that there was great wealth beneath the soil," Jackson said.

Industry group the MAIN Coalition, which is made up of agriculture, business and labor entities that benefit from Midwest infrastructure projects, said it hoped Trump would take action.

That uncertainty, Allard said, is part of the reason the protesters won't leave.

"We don't know what Trump is going to do," Allard said.

Assistant Secretary for Civil Works Jo-Ellen Darcy said in a news release that her decision was based on the need to "explore alternate routes" for the pipeline's crossing. Her full decision doesn't rule out that it could cross under the reservoir or north of Bismarck.

"Although we have had continuing discussion and exchanges of new information with the Standing Rock Sioux and Dakota Access, it's clear that there's more work to do," Darcy said. "The best way to complete that work responsibly and expeditiously is to explore alternate routes for the pipeline crossing."

North Dakota's leaders criticized the decision, with Gov. Jack Dalrymple calling it a "serious mistake" that "prolongs the dangerous situation" of having several hundred protesters who are camped out on federal land during cold, wintry weather. U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer said it's a "very chilling signal" for the future of infrastructure in the United States.

"I’m encouraged we will restore law and order next month, when we get a president who will not thumb his nose at the rule of law," Cramer said in a statement to Politico.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Sunday that the Department of Justice will "continue to monitor the situation" and stands "ready to provide resources to help all those who can play a constructive role in easing tensions."

Standing Rock Sioux tribal chairman Dave Archambault said Monday that the tribe "will be forever grateful to the Obama administration" for the Army Corps of Engineers' decision.

Archambault said the Corps' decision "took tremendous courage" and he hoped Energy Transfer Partners, and the incoming Trump administration will respect that decision.

Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier, whose department has done much of the policing for the protests, said that "local law enforcement does not have an opinion" on the easement and that his department will continue to "enforce the law."

U.S. Secretary for the Interior Sally Jewell said in a statement that the Corps' "thoughtful approach ... ensures that there will be an in-depth evaluation of alternative routes for the pipeline and a closer look at potential impacts."

Earlier Sunday, an organizer with Veterans Stand for Standing Rock said tribal elders had asked the military veterans not to have confrontations with law enforcement officials, adding the group is there to help out those who've dug in against the project.

About 250 veterans gathered about a mile from the main camp for a meeting with organizer Wes Clark Jr., the son of former Democratic presidential candidate Gen. Wesley Clark. The group had said about 2,000 veterans were coming, but it wasn't clear how many actually arrived.

"We have been asked by the elders not to do direct action," Wes Clark Jr. said. He added that the National Guard and law enforcement have armored vehicles and are armed, warning: "If we come forward, they will attack us." Instead, he told the veterans, "If you see someone who needs help, help them out."

Some veterans will take part in a prayer ceremony Monday, during which they'll apologize for historical detrimental conduct by the military toward Native Americans and ask for forgiveness, Clark said. He also called the veterans' presence "about right and wrong and peace and love."

Authorities moved a blockade from the north end of the Backwater Bridge with the conditions that protesters stay south of it and come there only if there is a prearranged meeting. Authorities also asked protesters not to remove barriers on the bridge, which they have said was damaged in the late October conflict that led to several people being hurt, including a serious arm injury.

"That heavy presence is gone now and I really hope in this de-escalation they'll see that, and in good faith . the leadership in those camps will start squashing the violent factions," Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney said in a statement, reiterating that any violation will "will result in their arrest."

Steven Perry, a 66-year-old Vietnam veteran who's a member of the Little Traverse Bay band of Odawa Indians in Michigan, spoke of one of the protesters' main concerns: that the pipeline could pollute drinking water. "This is not just a native issue," he said, "This is an issue for everyone."

Hawaii expected to get 3 feet of snow. You read that right.

With a winter storm warning in effect through Saturday, the summits of Hawaii's Big Island could get more than two feet of snow. USA TODAY NETWORK

Hawaii's highest peak could get up to another foot of snow Sunday, on top of the 2 feet that have fallen since Thursday, the National Weather Service says.
A winter storm warning is in effect for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea through Saturday evening.

“Then we’re expecting another round on Sunday and Sunday night,” said Matthew Foster, a staff meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Honolulu.

The initial storm started on Thursday and was slowing down Saturday, “though some freezing drizzle is still possible,” Foster said.

The next storm is currently about 400 miles west of the island of Kauai and should arrive over the islands sometime on Sunday, Foster said.

“This one won’t be quite as strong when it moves over the Big Island, so we’re putting it as possibly 12 more inches of snow,” he said.

The rest of the island, and all of Hawaii, remains warm if somewhat wet, with heavy rains in some areas that have caused flash flooding.

“The grounds are already saturated now, so it doesn’t take much,” Foster said.
The snow at the peak of Mauna Loa is not uncommon because it is so high, nearly 14,000 feet.

“As long as we have deep enough clouds to support ice crystals, and when you have cold enough temperatures at the summit level, you can get snowfall,” said Foster.

Mauna Loa and its sister peak of Mauna Kea are both volcanos. Mauna Kea is the highest point in the state of Hawaii.

Snow on the peaks is not uncommon in the colder months of the year, though deep snow is rare.

“We’ll probably see three to five snow events a year during the cold season. Some years we might not get any, some years we might get more,” said Foster.
The only other area of Hawaii that gets snow with any regularity is the Haleakalā volcano on Maui, which at about 10,000 feet gets snow once every five years or so, he said.

Gunman storms into DC pizzeria and opens fire demanding to know 'the truth' about pizza-gate conspiracy theory story claiming that Hillary Clinton abused children there

I smell a left wing rat behind this! The way the article is written is to take a stab at alternative media. The description of the gun, and the description of "Police initially said Welch's motive was unclear but many quickly speculated it was related to the pizza-gate election conspiracy.

Following Welch's arrest, police described pizza-gate as a 'fictitious online conspiracy theory'." seem too direct to alternative media. I bet this guy was hired to do this. Probably a patsy for a drill. Fits to well with previous narratives of similar false flag operations.

A man allegedly armed with an assault rifle terrified customers when he walked into a popular pizza restaurant and demanded to know the truth about a pizza-gate conspiracy theory that claimed Hillary Clinton had abused children there.

Edgar Maddison Welch, 28, was arrested and charged after he stormed into Comet Ping Pong in Washington D.C. on Sunday at about 3pm armed with the rifle.

He was pictured walking backwards on the street with his hands on his head as police surrounded him with guns drawn.

Police said Welch told them he went to the pizzeria to investigate 'pizza-gate' - a story on fake news sites prior to the election that claimed Clinton had run a child sex abuse ring.

According to eyewitnesses, Welch spent 45 minutes inside the pizzeria where he was said to be looking for the secret tunnels identified in the fake news stories where children were allegedly abused, a nearby shop owner told the Washington Post.

Welch, from Salisbury in North Carolina, left customers and staff terrified when he walked through the front door and through to the back of the restaurant.

Police said he pointed a gun at an employee and threatened them before they were able to escape and notify police. Several customers and employees took shelter in nearby businesses.

Police said the lone gunman then fired one or more shots into the floor, but no one was injured.

Authorities found two firearms inside the restaurant and another weapon in his car parked outside. They said the incident was not terrorism related.

Welch was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.

Police initially said Welch's motive was unclear but many quickly speculated it was related to the pizza-gate election conspiracy.

Following Welch's arrest, police described pizza-gate as a 'fictitious online conspiracy theory'.

Some of the rumors even claimed that kidnapped and trafficked children were being kept in the venue's back rooms and secret basement tunnels where they were being molested.

There has been no evidence of the so-called abuse, no investigation and no victims who have come forward. The restaurant also says it does not have a basement or any hidden rooms.

But thousands of alt-right Trump supporters and anti-Hillary Clinton followers believe the claims.

The owner of the restaurant, James Alefantis, was forced to contact the FBI after the abuse became too much and he caught one supporter of the rumor trying to shoot a live video from within the pizzeria.

The man, from Salisbury, North Carolina, was taken into police custody and the streets remained closed on Sunday afternoon

The conspiracy theory took hold when the emails belonging to Clinton's campaign manager, John Podesta, were released by WikiLeaks.

Alefantis was once in a relationship with outspoken Clinton supporter David Brock.

The 4Chan users speculated that Alefantis' Comet Ping Pong was part of a Democratic child trafficking ring.

The conspiracy theory then took hold on social media, including Twitter and Reddit.

Reddit eventually took the step of banning the pizzagate topic from its message boards, citing its policy against posting the personal information of others.

'From this insane, fabricated conspiracy theory, we’ve come under constant assault,' the business owner told the New York Times at the time.

'I've done nothing for days but try to clean this up and protect my staff and friends from being terrorized.'

U.S. Set to Take Refugees Rejected by Australia

Republicans in the House and Senate sent a letter to Obama administration officials this week demanding more details about nearly 2,500 refugees the U.S. is taking from Australian. The refugees, who originate from some of the world’s most dangerous countries, have apparently been rejected by the Australian government. Now, lawmakers want to know why these refugees – too dangerous for Papua New Guinea and Nauru – are perfectly welcome inside the United States.

In a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and Secretary of State John Kerry, key lawmakers Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., complained about the lack of transparency.

“This situation is concerning for many reasons,” read the letter, charging that “your departments negotiated an international agreement regarding refugees without consulting or notifying Congress.”

The State Department has classified details on the deal, but defended the move in a statement.

“The United States is proud of its long history as the largest refugee resettlement country in the world,” the department said. “As the President has announced, our refugee resettlement program has grown substantially in the last year.

“The United States has agreed to consider referrals from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) of refugees now residing in Nauru and Papua New Guinea. These refugees are of special interest to UNHCR and we are engaged on a humanitarian basis as we are in other parts of the world."

There’s no concrete reason to believe the refugees have any relationship to terrorism, but they are mostly from countries known for Islamic extremism. According to Fox News, U.S. officials confirmed that the refugees were from Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, Iran, Pakistan, Somalia, and Sri Lanka. Others are considered “stateless.”

US Army Corps of Engineers denies easement for Dakota Access Pipeline -Sioux

Dec 4 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has denied an easement for the $3.8 billion Dakota Access Pipeline, according to a statement from the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, which has been protesting the project, saying it could contaminate water supplies.

"Today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that it will not be granting the easement to cross Lake Oahe for the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline," the tribe said in a statement. "Instead, the Corps will be undertaking an environmental impact statement to look at possible alternative routes."

The 1,172-mile (1,885-km) Dakota Access Pipeline, owned by Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners LP, is mostly complete, except for a segment planned to run under Lake Oahe, a reservoir formed by a dam on the Missouri River. According to this report, the US State Department’s Office of the Chief of Protocol organizes the participation of the Diplomatic Corps in special events and official public events such as Joint Sessions of Congress, inaugurations, funerals, and other ceremonies and, upon the election of a new US president, sends out an official inauguration invitation document to the Ministry (and other nations, too) querying as to whom of the Federation’s diplomats (Foreign ministry officials, ambassadors, etc.) will be attending.

With President-elect Donald Trump having won the US presidency instead of Hillary Clinton, MoFA diplomats receiving this US inauguration invitation document contacted US Ambassador Peter Selfridge, who heads the Office of the Chief of Protocol, seeking an immediate clarification to which Ambassador Selfridge replied that "the heading of this official inauguration invitation document naming Hillary Clinton as the next US president was nothing more than an “unintentional mistake”!!

Ambassador Selfridge was the Director of Scheduling Correspondence and Deputy Director in the Office of Scheduling and Advance in President Bill Clinton's scheduling office from 1995-1997 and, during the bitter 2000 US presidential election (whose finality was decided by the US Supreme Court), he was the Media Logistics Coordinator for the Gore-Lieberman campaign.
Being “bitter/angry” over Vice President Al Gore’s loss to President Bush, Selfridge then led a team of Clinton-Gore administration officials and operatives who destroyed the White House prior to Bush and his family moving in and whose “child like tantrum” against America’s most honored and revered building the New York Times described by stating:

5 Things You Need To Know About The Dakota Access Pipeline Protests

A small Standing Rock Sioux site in North Dakota called the Sacred Stone Camp has been propelled into the national news narrative following their stand against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Due in part to independent media coverage of the ongoing standoff, the Sacred Stone camp has grown into a formidable opposition against the $3.8 billion, 1,200-mile long pipeline.

Due to misinformation coming from law-enforcement, political favoritism toward the pipeline builders, and the media’s blatant reluctance to report on the pipeline, it’s hard to tell truth from fiction. Anti-Media, along with our partners in the independent media and our embedded journalist at the opposition encampment, have been covering the unfolding standoff continuously. Here are five things you need to know.

1. Who is opposing the pipeline — and why

The Standing Rock Sioux tribe is leading the opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline. They have been joined by the largest tribal coalition in over 100 years in their stand against the pipeline. The coalition is also comprised of activists, allies, and environmentalists, collectively known as “water protectors,” at the Sacred Stone Camp, an encampment close to the location where the pipeline is planned to cross the Missouri River in North Dakota. According to the Sacred Stone camp website, they are opposing the pipeline because “[t]he Dakota Access threatens everything from farming and drinking water to entire ecosystems, wildlife and food sources surrounding the Missouri.”

The Standing Rock Sioux also say the pipeline is violating treaty land, Sioux territory that was established many years ago by the federal government. “We will not allow Dakota Access to trespass on our treaty territory and destroy our medicines and our culture.”

The opposition to the pipeline spreads across several states and is not opposed solely by Native Americans. Farmers, ranchers, and landowners are also opposed to the pipeline. Many of them have had their land taken from them against their will and given to the pipeline via eminent domain.

2. The U.S. government and the pipeline corporation are continuing a long tradition of disrespecting Native Americans

The United States has a very bad reputation for treating Native Americans, the original inhabitants of this land, as less than human. In many instances in the past, the land where Native Americans lived was deemed to be of higher value than the Natives’ lives.

Such has been the case in North Dakota — not only now, but in the past as well. According to The Atlantic:

“The land beneath the pipeline was accorded to Sioux peoples by the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868. Eleven years later, the U.S. government incited and won the Great Sioux War, and ‘renegotiated’ a new treaty with the Sioux under threat of starvation. In that document, the tribe ceded much of the Laramie land, including the Black Hills of South Dakota, where many whites believed there to be gold.”

After the federal government relegated the Sioux people to the “Great Sioux Reservation” in 1851, the treaty was re-written and “renegotiated” by force whenever resources were discovered or when the U.S. government wanted land. Essentially, the Sioux people were victims of U.S.-sanctioned murder, and their land was stolen because gold was discovered on it.

Fast forward to 2016 and the Sioux people are once again making a stand on land that was once — and still is, according to the tribe — theirs. How is the government reacting to this stand? By brutally arresting the Native American water protectors for trespassing. If that is not a miscarriage of justice, I don’t know what is.

Further, Energy Transfer Partners, the company pulling the strings behind the DAPL, has deep pockets, and its lobbyists have cozied up to federal, state, and local governments with jurisdiction over the pipeline route. This could explain why the company began its construction of the pipeline on Army Corps of Engineers land without even securing an easement, which is required by law. Dakota Access LLC, a subsidiary of Energy Transfer Partners, has also used the strong-arm of government to force farmers and landowners to hand over their land to the pipeline against their will.

3. Violent acts are being carried out in North Dakota, but not by the water protectors

Violence is breaking out at the Dakota Access Protest site, but the protesters have nothing to do with it. Pipeline police, bolstered by the North Dakota National Guard and sheriffs imported from around the country, have turned the standoff into a war zone. Water protectors are regularly pepper sprayed, tear gassed, and violently arrested. Over the weekend, 127 people were detained in the biggest mass arrest to date.

Militarized police at the Dakota Access Pipeline site are decked out in riot gear, armed with military grade weapons, use armored cars or MRAPs with snipers on top of them, and have regularly used LRADs, a type of mass crowd dispersal weapon that uses a high pitched noise to hurt people’s ears —sometimes permanently.

Early reports of protesters being armed and violent have proven to be instances of misinformation spread by law enforcement apparently seeking to demonize the opposition. No credible reports of violence by the protesters have been confirmed or prosecuted. Nearly all arrests stem from trespassing charges or crimes of journalism.

When protesters initially began using civil disobedience to physically shut down the Dakota Access Pipeline site, they were confronted violently by security guards from British mercenary firm G4S. The mercs sicced dogs and used pepper spray on the protesters in an assault that went viral and helped catalyze even more support for the water protectors.

4. Independent media is under attack at the Dakota Access Pipeline — and the corporate media is ignoring it

Independent media’s broadcasts over the Internet are basically the only reason people around the country and the world now know about the struggle at Standing Rock. Unfortunately, journalists are not immune to the police crackdowns in North Dakota. Dozens of journalists have now been arrested, and an arrest warrant was issued for high-profile journalist Amy Goodman. One independent media outlet, Unicorn Riot, saw four of their journalists arrested in one day in North Dakota. One filmmaker is facing up to 45 years in prison for filming acts of civil disobedience against the pipeline.

Anti-Media’s journalist on the ground, Derrick Broze, was tased by law enforcement while covering the protests on Thursday as this article was being written.

Meanwhile, the national corporate media ignored the battle against the Dakota Access Pipeline as long as they could. For months, despite the DAPL emergence into the national narrative, ABC and NBC refused to air any coverage about it. A woman was arrested for protesting the pipeline on her own farm after Dakota Access LLC gained access to it against her will via eminent domain — yet there was still no corporate media coverage on the incident.

5. How you can help the opposition

Now that you see what water protectors are up against in North Dakota, here’s what you can do to help.
