Oil Spill - Follow Up on Sampling from Indian Creek

 Submitted by Nancy - Thanks

Ms. Swobada of the Apalachicola Times,

This is a follow-up to your coming to our test site yesterday and interviewing John Hutchison.

We collected samples from Indian Creek YESTERDAY, of what appears to be oil/dispersant mixture, and will have it chemically analyzed.

Recent report of dispersant use:

We see this gunk/foam EVERY place that we do a water treatment.
The tide was coming in from the bay yesterday and Indian Creek filled with a contaminant. The prior day, I noticed what appeared to be oil covering 20 to 30% of the surface of the water as I crossed the bridge to Apalachicola. When we went out on the boat yesterday to chase down the oil slicks I had seen the day before, the slicks had disappeared.

Curious, is it not?
What appeared to be oil slicks one day, and the next day Indian Creek fills up with strange brown goey foam.

If the test results confirm that what was sampled from Indian Creek yesterday is oil/dispersant, what are the people of the Apalachicola area going to do? Will the newspaper actually report the truth? Or will we be villanized, as what has been done to other whistleblowers (Taunya James and Bob Allen).

The interview you had with John Hutchison was video taped. I suggest you make certain that you properly quote Mr. Hutchison. Any misquote will be construed as an attack upon the character of Mr. Hutchison.

I will provide you with the test results from the chemist, once we have completed out work here. These results will include samples taken from Indian Creek earlier this week, when the stench of RAW SEWAGE was so intense it made my eyes water, head ache and stomach sick.

This area supplies over 10% of the oysters consumed in the United States. And the vast majority of the people living here depend upon the income derived from the seafood/oysters. I understand how important it is to the economy and lives of the people that the seafood be declared "safe". However, from the research I have done, it appears the Eastpoint water (sewage) treatment plant has NEVER been in compliance with the law. And just this week, I personally experienced raw sewage flowing at Indian Creek.

It has come to my attention that staph infections and cancer run rampant through the county.

Given the track record of this community REFUSING to address the pollution of the bay (sewage, landfill leakages) prior to the BP oil disaster, I fully understand the attacks that have been made upon people trying to warn about the area being contaminated with oil that was was suspended by dispersant.

There are solutions to the contamination, both the sewage/landfill leakage and the BP "dispersant suspended" oil. But, in order for these solutions to become reality, people need to first look at the cold, hard facts of the pollution.

The water that I personally sampled from this area on December 12, 2010 tested 3ppm in Apalachicola harbor (bottom water, not top water that could be skewed by bilge) and 2ppm at Indian Pass lagoon: OIL.

I informed the staff of your new governor, Rick Scott, of this contamination. I asked for an on camera interview. There has been no response after repeated requests.

The "official report" of the testing done on the Dec 12, 2010 samples and the additional samples we have taken since we have been in the area will be compiled once we complete our work here. I will forward these results to you, as well as to Gov. Scott.
