By
making additional demands of Moscow, the United States is distorting the Geneva
agreement which aims to de-escalate the crisis in Ukraine, Russia says.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the comments on
Friday, adding that Moscow firmly contributes to easing the tensions based on
the Geneva deal.
“Russia will
firmly contribute to the de-escalation of the conflict based on the compromise approach
agreed in Geneva…there can be no one-sided demands,” said Lavrov.“And we are being presented them – first of all I mean the United States of America who have an outstanding ability to turn everything on its head,” Lavrov added.
The top Russian diplomat also denounced Kiev’s military operation
in eastern Ukraine, calling it a “bloody crime.”
Lavrov said Kiev’s interim government would face justice for
waging a war on its own people.
The Russian minister’s remarks come as US secretary of State John Kerry
accused Russia a day earlier of violating the Geneva deal and escalating the
situation in eastern and southern Ukrainian regions.
Kerry said Russia has not taken a “single concrete step” to uphold
the terms of the Geneva deal and warned that if Moscow does not change course,
it will be a “grave and expensive mistake.”
The US secretary also accused Moscow of direct involvement in the
recent escalation of the situation in eastern and southern Ukraine.
On April 17, Ukraine’s interim government together with the US,
Russia and the European Union reached an agreement in the Swiss city of Geneva,
calling for all sides to ease the ongoing crisis in eastern Ukraine, where
anti-Kiev protesters continue to occupy state buildings in several towns and
cities.
Tensions between Western powers and Moscow heightened after Crimea
declared independence from Ukraine and became part of Russia following a
referendum on March 16, in which almost 97 percent of the participants voted
for rejoining the Russian Federation, with a turnout of over 83 percent.
