Syria's opposition chief Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib has resigned from the National Coalition, a dissident group recognized by dozens of states and organisations as a legitimate representative of the Syrian people.
"I announce my resignation from the National Coalition, so that I can work with a freedom that cannot possibly be had in an official institution," Khatib said in a statement published on Sunday on his Facebook page.
The surprise resignation comes just days after the first election in Istanbul of a rebel prime minister, Ghassan Hitto, and just over two years on from the outbreak of a popular revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

---
Khatib gave his resignation during the press conference with US Sec. of State Kerry standing by his side. This means that he was ordered to resign by the U.S. Possibly because Syrian rebels were accused of the use of chemical weapons.
As CIA is training this Syrian rebel fraction for some time, and Israel yesterday apologized to Turkey for attack on Ghaza aid ship, this means that U.S. is leaving it's covert lidership of proxy regime change in Syria and region and prepares to take on open engagement in war against Assad regime, whose escalation during Obama's talks with Israel was postponed for up to June.
Today Kerry is in Iraq urging leaders to stop Iranian overflights of arms and fighters heading to Syria.
All this is explaining Greek/ Cyprus financial problems and Russian reluctance to engage in their remediation.
