Remembering ~ Obama’s $180 Million U.S. TAXPAYER Gift Card To The U.N.

The United Nations reported that it was holding almost $180 million that U.S. taxpayers had overpaidinto the U.N.’s Tax Equalization Fund. Obama has allowed the U.N. to keep this overpaid money by not instructing the U.N. on how it wishes to dispose of it.

This week, I voted in support of a bill (H.R. 519) that would instruct the U.N. to return those funds to the United States so we can generate savings for American taxpayers. Especially in light of our own fiscal situation at home, there is no reason that the U.N. should be holding almost $180 million of taxpayer dollars simply because it was “overpaid.”

My colleague, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen correctly noted that this is essentially giving a 180 million dollar gift card to United Nations. Obama should also demand that the process for Tax Equalization Fund withholdings be revised to prevent (or at least reduce) future discrepancies leading to such large surpluses.

The House voted 259-169 in favor of H.R. 519, but the bill failed to receive the two-thirds majority vote required for passage under suspension of the rules. I am disappointed that the legislation didn’t pass – I believe it is a commonsense step to cut unnecessary spending.
