My 91
year-old mother who is sadly ridden with arthritis and in
constant pain always says to me, "Sher, don't get older. It's no
picnic."
It's
true, because getting older DOES have its share of physical challenges
which go FAR beyond joint aches and pains.
What
makes this even more unsettling is the fact that, because of habits like
our processed and fast food diets, smoking, being couch potatoes and
relying on medications to create "chemically-induced health," our
bodies are breaking down prematurely.
And
we're seeing the health consequences at younger and younger ages!
Nowhere
are the effects of aging more prevalent than in your GUT.
What
makes age-related gut issues such a monster is the fact that the problems
don't just originate in your gut--your other bodily systems are instigators
too!
Let's
take a little closer look at some of the gut-related health prices we pay
as we age as well as some great ways to S - L - O - W down that biological
clock at ALL ages.
The aging gut
As
you age, digestive issues such as heartburn, gas, constipation, diarrhea,
hemorrhoids and diverticulitis begin popping up more and more.
For
good reason.
First
of all, as you age the muscles in your digestive tract become stiffer,
weaker and less efficient at "moving things along."
Plus
the tissues along your intestinal tract are more susceptible to damage
because new cells aren't forming as quickly as they once did.
But
far and away, the most significant factor is that as you age, your body's
ability to produce digestive enzymes decreases. Fewer enzymes for the job
leads to messed-up digestion.
Which
means you get an aching gut and anything-but-normal BMs.
This
is especially true of anyone who has taken acid reducers...and heaven
knows, that includes millions of people. Nexium didn't get to be a top
seller year after year by just having a handful of people taking it.
But wait! There's more
In
addition, as they age many people start experiencing a "sluggish
stomach," otherwise known as gastroparesis.
It
occurs when the muscles in your stomach don't open like they should to let
your partially digested food (called "chyme") pass into the upper
part of your small intestine (your duodenum).
This
is a serious condition for three major reasons.
For
one, the duodenum is the "Grand Central Station" of your
digestive tract. Here is where the MOST digestive action takes place--NOT
in your stomach as so many people believe.
So
if your food (chyme) isn't passing into your digestive hot spot like it
should, well, guess what gets screwed up?
Yup--your
digestion.
And
that can mean all kinds of "nasties" like gas, bloating,
constipation, diarrhea and poor nutrient absorption (which can then lead to
weight loss and malnutrition).
Another
reason gastroparesis is serious is because if your food ISN'T going into
the duodenum like it's supposed to, that means it's overstaying its welcome
in your stomach.
When
this happens the food can actually harden (called a bezoar) and cause a
blockage that can be life-threatening.
And
lastly, food that sits (and rots) in the stomach too long can lead to
harmful bacteria overgrowth in your stomach, which can make you extremely
ill.
Wrenches your gut and
starts anywhere but
There
are two conditions that are rampant in our society today that also affect
your GI tract.
Type
II diabetes and atherosclerosis.
If
Type II diabetes is poorly controlled, it can lead to heart disease, kidney
disease, cancer, high blood pressure, gangrenous infections (that may
require amputation) blindness, strokes and even death.
Oh,
and gut problems too.
According
to Francisco J. Marrero, MD, a gastroenterologist with the Digestive
Disease Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, in addition to its usual wrath,
diabetes can also cause movement problems in your intestinal tract.
Get
the laxatives out!
In
addition, Dr. Marrero says that artery blockages (atherosclerosis) can
affect blood flow to the bowels--a condition known as "intestinal
ischemia."
What
happens is blood flow to your intestines decreases in a similar way that
blood flow decreases to your heart when you're having a heart attack or
your brain when you're having a stroke!
This
can cause serious tissue damage and make your bowels even MORE sluggish.
Let's not forget
these two biggies
Here
are two more "biggies" that can wreck your digestion--arthritis
and hypertension.
Many
people take a variety of medications to manage chronic conditions like
arthritis and high blood pressure, and the drugs used to treat both of
those conditions can have disastrous digestive tract side effects.
Dr.
Marrero says, "People
are at increased risk of peptic ulcer disease when they take non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)," which are
commonly prescribed for arthritis.
Plus,
the side effects of many of the popular high blood pressure drugs include
constipation, diarrhea, gas, heartburn, nausea, stomach pain and/or
vomiting.
So, what does this
have to do with me?
Now,
you may be thinking, "What does all of this have to do with me? You're
just talking about really old people, right?"
WRONG.
Unfortunately,
the physical degeneration that typically used to be seen with advanced
aging is no longer limited to the elderly.
Consider
these facts:
- Children as young as
toddlers are on acid reducers.
- Arthritis is one of the
major causes of disability in people as young as 18!
- Currently about 25 million
people in the US have diabetes, and health experts estimate that by the
year 2050, as many as 1 in 3 people could have it.
- Digestive complaints are
consistently among the top 5 reasons that people see a doctor at ALL ages.
- People as young as their
20's are being prescribed high blood pressure drugs.
At
no other time in history have these things happened. These are new
occurrences.
And
the primary cause of all of this is:
OUR
DIETS.
That's
right.
The
typical poorly combined Western diet of processed foods, fast food, soda
and refined carbs is seriously lacking essential nutrients, uses up LOTS of
your precious enzymes and creates a tremendous amount of acid wastes.
And
this is far and away THE main cause of our chronic degenerative conditions
(and the resulting hell-on-earth they can cause in your digestive tract).
Our
bodies are not being given the vital nutrients they need to survive and
thrive AND the onslaught of acid wastes from our foods puts our bodies into
a state of constant inflammation.
In
other words, we're causing our bodies to age prematurely, day in and day
out.
So
it becomes not a question of if, but when, will you develop a chronic
condition.
And
that might be a lot sooner than you think.
What you can do
No
matter WHAT your age, you can help slow (and even stop!) the effects of
physical degeneration and chronic conditions in your body.
It
can be slowed or stopped by just following these 2 steps:
1- Eat in a way that nourishes
your body, encourages efficient digestion and minimizes acid wastes
2- Help compensate for any
damage that may have been caused already to your enzyme making capability
by acid reducers and hard to digest meals
Part 1--The diet piece
Eating
for great health, proper nutrition and optimal digestion is not only
simple, but it's positively DELICIOUS.
All
it takes is following my advice in the Great Taste No Pain
health system.
The
Great Taste No Pain
manuals spell out why it's so important to avoid certain meal
combinations because they stress your stomach and intestines, create lots
of inflammation-causing acid wastes and deplete your supply of enzymes.
It's
logical and will make perfect sense to you.
Then
GTNP goes on to show you what GOOD nutrient-rich meal combinations are,
give you suggestions for meal planning, and even gives you a dining out
card to carry with you everywhere so all your meals will be easily digested.
And
remember that there are 112 delicious dishes in the recipe book portion
of the system that you will absolutely LOVE. Savory soups and stews.
Tasty salads. Appetizers you'll be proud to serve your party guests. Even
desserts!
Note
that if you're gluten-sensitive, Great Taste No Gluten
is for you instead.
Part 2- The enzyme
piece
If
you suspect you may be enzyme-challenged already or just want to give your
enzymes a little boost if necessary, Digestizol Max
may be just what you need.
Digestizol Max
is loaded with 14
natural, potent plant-derived enzymes that will give your body the help
it needs to break down all of your foods--even heavy proteins, complex
carbs and sticky fats.
Plant-derived
enzymes have been shown to be between 10 and 100 times MORE effective at
digesting proteins, fats and carbohydrates than animal enzymes. Plus, their
plant origins make them suitable for vegetarians and meat eaters
alike! Learn
more about Digestizol Max and all the ways it can help you here
Unfortunately,
the effects of aging are hitting us and younger and younger ages because we
are asking for it with our diets.
But
the good news is, this cycle can be turned around.
When
you embrace the power of the right diet and supplement with enzymes as
needed, you are taking two of the most significant measures to slow your
biological clock at ANY age, prevent or alleviate chronic conditions and
feel great from head to toe!
To
your health,
Sherry

PPS: No more Nexium for Debbie, and her blood pressure's the
lowest it's been in 2 years!
Hi Sherry,
My daughter Tiffany went on
the web searching for information about Hiatus Hernia and came across your
web site. She decided that she had had enough of seeing her mother sick and
on lots of different medications with no results.
I have Nephritis of the
kidneys and also suffer from Meniere's Disease and then to be told that I
have a hernia as well really upset me.
Tiffany ordered your program and I
decided what do I have to lose? I might as well give it a go.
I have been on the program for
just 2 weeks and I have no more reflux or burping after meals. I also have
lots more energy.
I have Iost 5kg and I have
been sleeping at night which I had not been doing. I would average 3 hours
at the most at night.
I went back to the doctor's
and my blood pressure was the lowest that it has been for 2 years! He asked
me what have I been doing that is different. I told him about your program.
Thank you, Sherry! No more
Nexium for me!
I wish that I had followed
this eating plan all my life!
Debbie
