Re: Obamacare Nullification

Dear Friends,

We won a great victory this year for the conservative cause.

Our victory has been hailed by conservatives all over the country. In fact, it was probably the most significant legislative accomplishment in the House of Representatives all year.

One way I know I'm right about that is that, the liberals and the political establishment are doing everything they can to undo it. Unfortunately for me, since I was the main one pushing for this legislation, their main tactic is to try and silence me by attacking me personally.

As you know, I took a bold step this year and introduced the Health Care Freedom of Choice Act, commonly known as Obamacare Nullification.

Even though the experts and political pundits unanimously pronounced the legislation dead-on-arrival, by the grace of God and the hard work of many dedicated citizens, we got the bill out of committee and were able to persuade a majority of the House of Representatives to vote in favor of it.

We did what none of the establishment thought could be done, but the battle is far from over. Right now the bill is in a Senate committee, and they are committed to keeping it there.

In order to kill the bill, they are desperately trying to distract from the main issue. Even though it is no longer in the House, they are actually attacking me personally and are even threatening to file an Ethics complaint against me.

Let me explain.

When we were working so hard to get the bill out of committee, we took the tactic of bringing in the most respected and scholarly authorities we could find to explain the legality, Constitutionality, and economic effects of this bill and the dire consequences of not adopting nullification.

One of the experts we brought in was Dr. Walter Williams, a distinguished professor of Economics at George Mason University. Dr. Williams' testimony to the committee was devastating to those big government types who wanted to obstruct us from preserving our liberties.

Instead of carefully considering Dr. Williams' testimony and debating the issue on the merits, however, the liberals seized on the fact that I had authorized the Aeronautics Commission to use the state airplane to bring Dr. Williams to Columbia, so the committee could hear his important testimony and interact with him directly.

Let me say, categorically, that before I authorized that flight, I did all necessary due diligence to determine that this was an appropriate, legal, and ethical use of the state airplane. I was assured by all the officials I spoke with that this was permissible.

I also considered carefully the potential damage that a future opponent could do to me in my re-election, because the state airplane is such a hot-button issue.

The conclusion I came to was that, although the airplane is often abused by politicians, this was an entirely appropriate use of this state asset, and that Dr. Williams' testimony was significant enough to warrant this unusual step. I also concluded that it was worth the political risk, because Obamacare is such an enormous threat to our future.

The Democrats and liberals of course don't see it that way.

Having lost on the merits of the issue, and having lost in the court of public opinion, they are focusing all their attention on trying to paint me as "unethical" and are even trying to intimidate me into personally re-paying the cost of the flight (about $6,300).

In the next few days, I expect the media will be making a big deal out of this issue, as my political opponents try to keep me from pushing Obamacare Nullification to final passage.

I wanted you to know that I am not giving up and I am not backing down. But I cannot do it alone.

There are two ways you can help:

First; please call your Senator today and urge him to bring Obamacare Nullification to the floor for a vote, before the end of the Session. It is critical that you do that now.

You can find your Senator's contact information here: CLICK HERE TO FIND YOUR SENATOR OR REPRESENTATIVE.

Second; please call Rep. Bruce Bannister, and ask him to use his influence as GOP Majority Leader to cover my back and keep these liberals from derailing our efforts.

You can reach Rep. Bannister at (803) 734-3138, or BruceBannister@SCHouse.gov .

Thank you for all your help, and if you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Rep. Bill Chumley
