An emergency official told local news channel WCYB that 50-60 people were injured and 12-15 patients were taken to hospitals by ambulance or helicopters with some of them in critical condition. There have been no reports of fatalities so far.
The car was driven by an elderly man who may have lost consciousness or “had some medical issue” and drove into the crowd, Reuters reports citing volunteer fire department chief Ben Sanders. The driver told the authorities afterward he did not remember what had happened.
The incident occurred in the town of Damascus, VA, on Saturday afternoon during the annual celebration of the Appalachian Trail, a famous hiking trail in the northeast of the United States.
State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says troopers have been sent to the scene but she had no further information, AP reports.
According to witness accounts, the car had a handicapped parking sticker. “He was hitting hikers,” said Vickie Harmon, a witness.“I saw hikers just go everywhere.”

was the car registered. Did he have a permit to drive it. Was a proper back round check done on him prior to taking ownership of the car ? I think we must pass legislation to make it a law to not drive into crowds of people with a car because it causes serious injury and property damage. Then all people from coast to coast can rest easy knowing this will never happen again. Sound familiar ? Quick buy a car before they try to outlaw them and hoard gas and tires too because they will try to extremely limit your access to them and or tax the blazes outta them.
