Stuffing pork up your nose can stop nosebleeds

BOSTON (AP) - There's some truth to the effectiveness of folk remedies and old wives' tales when it comes to serious medical issues, according to findings by a team from Detroit Medical Center.
Dr. Sonal Saraiya and her colleagues in Michigan found that packing strips of cured pork in the nose of a child who suffers from uncontrollable, life-threatening nosebleeds can stop the hemorrhaging, a discovery that won them a 2014 Ig Nobel prize, the annual award for sometimes inane, yet often surprisingly practical, scientific discoveries.

Laying down, stuffing a wad of Kleenex or toilet paper in the side of the nose that is bleeding, and applying pressure with your fingers on the side of the nose that has been bleeding will also stop it. I would be very concerned about putting raw pork up one's nose, as the area is moist and close to the brain, and uncooked pork is rampant with various critters that could easily imbed within the moist tissue and possibly create some very serious issues that could be next to impossible to be rid of. How this individual came up with this protocol and why she would encourage people to use it is beyond me. And this won them the Nobel Prize? Why didn't they try to Kleenex wad up the nose, pressure on the nose and even ice on it remedy before putting dangerous pork in those moist membranes just at the human brain????? http://harbarenkolm.hubpages.com/hub/Dangers_of_Pork
