In November Senate Democrats urged President Obama to circumvent Congress by using executive actions.
Sens. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) spearheaded the effort. Sens. Chris Coon (D-DE), Tom Carper (D-DE) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) have joined their colleagues.
Obama and the Democrats have received support from the Michael Bloomberg-funded Everytown for Gun Safety organization.
It is unclear if Obama will also sign an order to deny Americans on the government’s secret no-fly their right to practice the Second Amendment.
The White House refused to provide details on the executive orders under consideration.
“At this point, I still don’t have an update on the progress the administration is making on scrubbing the rules,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters during his daily press briefing on Thursday.
Obama previously met with gun control advocates to discuss and solicit ideas on how to circumvent the Second Amendment.
On Friday he met with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.). Giffords was shot by a mentally ill man in 2011 while attending a political event in Tucson.
