I believe we will find that the Bible identifies the papal power as the anti-Christ power. Their are many clear clues given in God's Word, and when they're all put together the conclusion we come to is inescapable. There is a great list of these identifying markers here:

The reformers of past centuries also understood who the anti-Christ power was, and would continue to be. John Calvin, Thomas Cranmer, John Knox, John Wesley, John Wycliffe, John Huss, Jerome, John Melanchthon, etc....
