Last Friday a suicide-bomber wearing an explosive-laden vest entered the outside security checkpoint of the U.S. Embassy in Turkey and detonated the explosives killing himself and an embassy security guard according to this story from The New York Times:
“…a man entered a security checkpoint near the consular section and began to panic as the metal detector buzzed. When he reached for his midsection, a Turkish guard yelled, “Run away, a bomb!” according to NTV. The footage then went black.”
American ambassador Francis J. Ricciardone Jr. was able to speak to reporters after the incident and said that “we” had already received an outpouring of support since the attack, felt safe, and would continue to fight terrorism.
The Turkish government blames a Marxist group for the attack and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan believes a skin mark on the head of the attacker identifies him as having been imprisoned for domestic terrorism before.
The White House commented saying it was to early to tell who is to blame for the bombing, and the U.S. will launch its own investigation into this incident. This isn’t the first time  in recent history an act of terrorism has occurred at an U.S. Embassy, for example the attacks in Libya last year. The State Department has issued a warning for American citizens to avoid diplomatic missions to Turkey until otherwise noted and to be on the alert for violence and large crowds.
