Texas Doctor Abandons Car, Wades Through Half-Mile Of Waist Deep Water To Deliver Babies In Storm
WFAA reports that Dr. Bassem Maximous will never forget the births of babies Mila and Bradley because he almost missed their big entrance after a flood left him stranded in the middle of the road. Monika Thiede and Melissa Vasquez were both in a nearby hospital about to give birth to their babies when Dr. Maximous became stranded. However, the doctor was determined to make it to the hospital in time for the delivery despite the flood before him. When the doctor’s car became flooded, he decided to make the trek to the hospital by foot.
“As soon as I opened the door, the water just hit me in my face. I left the car in the middle of the road, just got out and started walking.”The doctor would wade through nearly waist deep water for half a mile in the middle of the storm to ensure he made it to assist in the women’s deliveries. Dr. Maximous says he used his cellphone to call nurses in labor and delivery to update them consistently on his status. Meanwhile, the two waiting women were nervous that their beloved doctor wouldn’t be there for their big moment. Monika Thiede says she started to cry when she heard that her doctor may not make it in time for the delivery.
“What?! Then I started to cry a little bit.”However, the determined doctor made it in time to deliver not one, but two babies that day. Dr. Maximous says he doesn’t need any praise for his actions as it was all in a day’s work.
“I was determined to make it. It was a group effort that we got everyone safely delivered and taken care of.”USA Today notes that the flood the persistent Dr. Maximous faced was not any ordinary rainfall. More than 11 inches of rain fell within three hours in the Houston suburb of Clear Lake, causing high water on roadways and extensive flooding.
What do you think of the doctor’s efforts to make it to his patient’s births? Would your OB tread through waist-high water in the middle of a storm to make it to your delivery in time?
