As we hear of what seems to be avalanches of scandals and corruptions in many parts of our nation, it may be good to go back about 150 years into our nation's history and read the words of Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819-1881). He was a poet and the founder and editor of the Scribner's Monthly later named Century Magazine. He had no political agenda other than to see his beloved nation restored. He penned these famous words:
God, give us men! A time like this demands
Strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands;
Men whom the lust of office does not kill;
Men whom the spoils of office can not buy;
Men who possess opinions and a will;
Men who have honor; men who will not lie;
Men who can stand before a demagogue
And damn his treacherous flatteries without winking!
Tall men, sun-crowned, who live above the fog
In public duty, and in private thinking;
For while the rabble, with their thumb-worn creeds,
Their large professions and their little deeds,
Mingle in selfish strife, lo! Freedom weeps,
Wrong rules the land and waiting Justice sleeps.
They are old words that ring true for our time. May these words, this prayer, be on the lips of all who in our day desire to see our beloved nation restored.
