I
remember back in the 1980's in my insurance career I worked
with a gal (Denise) who had been in a serious car accident many
years before and continued to suffer from chronic back and neck pain.
I
obviously didn't know then what I know now about inflammation and pain, but
it still struck me as odd that she needed to take medication (NSAIDS) for
pain every single day without fail.
I
never questioned her at the time, but looking back now I realize that there
are many things Denise (and others like her) could have done to make a BIG
difference in their level of pain.
Let's
take a little closer look at this monster we call pain that makes life
miserable for so many, as well as explore some ways to help ease the
hurting.
Acute vs. chronic
There
are 2 main types of pain--acute and chronic.
Acute
pain is sudden and short-lived. It's a normal sensation triggered in your
nervous system in response to an injury or illness.
Once
the cause of the pain has healed or run its course, the pain usually stops.
But
chronic pain is a whole different animal.
Chronic
pain persists. It gnaws at you. Pain signals keep firing away on all
cylinders in your nervous system for weeks, months, even years.
There
may have been an initial injury like a sprained back, or an illness like a
serious infection, but chronic pain continues to make your life miserable
even after the initial cause is long past.
Plus
many people suffer chronic pain even in the absence of any past injury or
illness!
It's an epidemic!
A
recent market research report indicated that more than 1.5 billion people
worldwide suffer from some form of chronic pain!
That's
more people suffering from chronic pain than diabetes, heart disease and
cancer COMBINED!
That's
a lot of Hurtin' Mertins.
The
most commonly reported type of chronic pain is low back pain, followed by
neck pain, knee pain, shoulder pain and severe headaches or migraine.
Here
are some more disturbing chronic pain facts based on a survey conducted by
the American Pain Foundation:
- More than half of the chronic pain sufferers (51%)
felt they had little or no control over their pain.
- Six out of 10 patients (60%) said they experience
intense pain one or more times daily, which severely impacts their
quality of life and overall well-being.
- More than three quarters of patients (77%) reported
feeling depressed about their pain.
- 86% reported an inability to sleep well due to pain.
- Back pain is the #1 cause of disability in
Americans under 45 years old.
Is that your final
answer?
Because
chronic pain can have SUCH a profound impact on your ability to function
and quality of life, sadly there are many Denises out there popping
medications frequently or every single day.
These
can include anti-inflammatory drugs, antidepressants and sleeping pills.
But
sadly many chronic pain sufferers get only limited relief, if any, from the
drugs.
And
of course that's not even considering the side effects from the drugs that
they get on top of everything else!
For
example, long-term use of anti-inflammatories (including NSAIDS) can lead
to gastritis, GI bleeding and other GI problems.
Sleeping
pills (like Ambien) can cause drowsiness, stomach upset, dependence,
headaches, memory problems and even hallucinations.
Antidepressants
are no prize either. Some of the common effects of antidepressants like
Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, and Celexa include:
- Nausea
- Nervousness
- Headaches
- Sleepiness
- Sexual dysfunction
- Dizziness
- Stomach upset
- Weight gain
Plus
the elevated levels of serotonin caused by these drugs in some cases can
cause changes in your cell neurons that can be classified as brain damage!
And
ALL antidepressants are required by the FDA to carry a warning about the
risk of suicidal thoughts, hostility, and agitation.
Oh,
and by the way, on top of all that you stand a great chance of STILL
hurting from your chronic pain.
One common thread
Although
the situations and underlying causes of chronic pain can vary from person
to person, one common theme is consistent throughout.
Inflammation!
Now,
it's important to understand that all inflammation is NOT bad.
Inflammation
is your body's natural response to challenges like infections, injuries or
insect bites--think of the swelling from a sprained ankle or the redness of
a mosquito bite or the soreness of strep throat.
In
those cases, inflammation is a sign that your body's "repairmen"
(including immune cells and cholesterol) are doing their job to
"fix" the problem and get you back to normal.
But
the problem arises when your body's inflammation mechanism goes haywire.
This creates inflammation that is NOT related to an isolated health
challenge, but instead becomes constant and can attack various parts of the
body.
If
this continues uninterrupted over time, voila--you've joined the ranks of
the chronic pain sufferers.
Take the bull by the
horns
Since
chronic inflammation is a major culprit behind many a chronic pain, it
makes sense to take the bull by the horns and do whatever you can to reduce
that inflammation!
And
thankfully there are other answers besides prescription drugs (with their
side effects) that have been shown to be extremely effective!
Here
are three safe, natural strategies that can help make a big difference in
your level of pain and inflammation:
1- Reduce acid waste
accumulation
Acid
waste buildup is the number ONE most widespread, significant cause of
chronic inflammation and pain.
Acid
wastes are the natural by-product of digestion and cell metabolism. And
when your body is working like it should, these wastes are easily
eliminated through your bowel movements (as well as in your urine and sweat).
But
when your digestion is poor, it's harder for your body to eliminate acid
wastes like it should. Instead they can accumulate in your gut and seep out
into your bloodstream through the intestinal wall.
Once
they're in your blood, they're more destructive than a bull in a china
shop. They can travel EVERYWHERE and light fires of inflammation all along
the way.
Ouch!
You can practically feel the pain!
Now,
poor digestion (and acid waste accumulation) is typically the result of
eating foods that are inherently acid-creating (especially fast food and
packaged foods) and complex, hard to digest meals.
But
just as easily as you add to your acid waste buildup by eating the WRONG
foods, you can turn it around VERY quickly by simply eating for better
digestion.
And
that is precisely what following my advice in the Great Taste No Pain health
system will help you achieve.
The
Great Taste No Pain system is designed to help you cleanse your body
internally which in turn helps reduce inflammation.
The
GTNP manuals will
spell out the few simple things you need to do to dramatically improve your
digestion and help eliminate built-up acid wastes.
Not
only can this mean less inflammation but you'll also likely notice a
dramatic improvement in tummy troubles like gas, bloating, acid reflux
and constipation too.
2- Get the proper
ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 EFAs
A
deficiency
in Omega-3 essential fatty acids is another leading cause of
inflammation and pain.
Omega-6
and Omega-3 essential fatty acids work together in your body to help you
heal from challenges such as wounds or injuries like I described above.
Omega-6
EFAs stir up inflammation, which sounds the signal for the healing process
to begin.
Once
healing is underway, Omega-3 EFAs
come in and cool everything down.
But
when you have too many inflammation-stirring Omega-6 EFAs in your system
and not enough calming Omega-3s, then you're putting out the coffee and
donuts for inflammation to pay a visit and stay a while.
And
since our typical modern diets are LOADED with Omega-6 EFAs and seriously
lacking Omega-3 EFAs, most people have a serious imbalance going on...
And
they've got the inflammation and chronic pain to prove it!
So
it's crucial to make sure your Omega-3 supply is what is should be with
eating more fish that are sources of this essential nutrient (more on that
below) as well as taking a fish oil supplement.
VitalMega-3
is a potent pharmaceutical-grade fish oil formula that delivers a full
1,000 mg. of the necessary EPA and DHA
essential fatty acids in every daily 2-capsule serving.
VitalMega-3
can help bring your Omega-6 : Omega-3 EFA balance into a more desirable
range and encourage your natural anti-inflammatory mechanism to work like
it should.
3- Eat your
anti-inflammatories
There
are certain foods that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties,
and they also happen to be delicious!
They
include:
1. Salmon
Salmon
is probably one of the best sources of Omega-3 fats.
When
purchasing salmon, look for the wild caught variety because commercially
farmed salmon are loaded with toxins.
Aside
from salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel are rich in Omega-3 as well.
2. Onions
Onions
are rich in quercetin, an antioxidant known for fighting enzymes that cause
inflammation.
Onions
also contain plenty of sulfur compounds that can help strengthen your
immune system.
Other
foods that are good sources of quercetin are red wine, broccoli, apples and
grapes.
3. Blueberries
Blueberries
are well-known for their high concentration of antioxidants, and some of
the antioxidants that can be helpful for chronic pain are anthocyanins.
Like
all antioxidants, anthocyanins help battle free radicals. Free radicals can
trigger inflammation which can make chronic pain worse.
4. Sweet Potatoes
Sweet
potatoes contain high amounts of carotenoids, antioxidants that are very
similar to anthocyanins. Carotenoids can help minimize inflammation and
strengthen your immunity.
Papayas,
carrots, mangoes and red peppers are also good sources of carotenoids.
5. Garlic
Garlic
is one of THE most impressive anti-inflammatory foods that you can eat.
Rich
in sulfur compounds, garlic stimulates the production of helper T-cells
which can boost your immune system and fight inflammation.
Chronic
pain is clearly an epidemic and affects billions of people all over the
world.
But
you don't have to be one of them.
Not
at all or not any longer.
See
what a difference it can make in your level of hurting to safely and
naturally fight the main culprit behind most chronic pain -- inflammation.
Then
write and tell me how much better you're feeling.

PPS: Elaine has drastically
cut down her pain medication!
Hi Sherry,
I am so thankful that I found
you on the internet.
I have suffered for 19 years
from fibromyalgia and now, also with ulcerative colitis and headaches that
never go away.
I have been on your Great Taste No Pain
plan for 7 days.
The results have been amazing!
I have taken pain medicine for years and years and now have gone from 3
doses to 1 dose per day!
My colitis has also improved.
I have been eating foods that I have been told not to eat for years and I
am enjoying every one.
I am looking forward to
eventually not taking any pain medication at all!
