What You Don't Know About Protein

What You Don't Know About Protein

Far and away, the most misunderstood nutrient in the world is protein.
There are as many opinions about protein as there are news flashes about the Kardashians -- what the best sources are, how often you should eat it and why it's really important.
And heaven help you if you're a vegetarian! Friends and relatives are expecting you to collapse from a protein deficiency at any moment.
So to clear up any confusion you may have about protein, here's the fact versus the fiction:
Much more than strong muscles
When people think protein, they usually think "strength" or "muscle."  That's true, but that's only the beginning.
Protein also supports the building, repair and maintenance of all your organs, nerves, skin, hair and nails.
Protein forms the basis for your body's enzymes and hormones--which literally control everything about you.  Every single one of your body's processes is the result of enzymes and/or hormones in action.
It also comprises the neurotransmitters in your brain, helping it to communicate with your body, and makes up the antibodies generated by your immune system that protect you from infections, viruses and dangerous substances you ingest.

Play with blocks
The building blocks of protein are amino acids and there are 22 of them in Nature.
Eight of them (isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine) are called "essential" because your body can't synthesize them (i.e.: it can't create them from other amino acids). So you must get them in your diet.
Animal foods (meats, eggs and dairy) are called "complete proteins" because they contain all 8 of the essential amino acids.
Many other foods (especially grains, nuts, beans and legumes) also contain amino acids, but they're all lacking at least one of the 8 essential ones, so they're not in and of themselves a "complete protein."
That's why it's important for vegetarians to eat a wide variety of protein foods--that way they ensure they're getting all the essential amino acids.

The magic "transformation"
When you eat any source of protein, your body doesn't just break it down into its amino acids and call it a day. A transformation has to take place first in your liver in order for the protein to be usable.
You see, there are many "recipes" for different proteins made up of various combinations of amino acids. What "recipe" your liver decides to concoct on is whatever form of protein your body needs at that time.
The protein needed for your hair, for example, is different than the protein needed to build your biceps.
So when you eat meat, beans or other protein foods, your body goes through a complex series of steps before it can use it:
1- Your stomach begins the initial breakdown of the protein into its amino acids, then the final breakdown is completed in the small intestine.
2- Then the amino acids are absorbed into your bloodstream and transported to your liver.
3- Your liver puts on its "chef's hat" and mixes the right combination of amino acids for whatever your protein needs happen to be.
4- If a protein that you need requires a certain non-essential amino acid that you haven't eaten, the liver can synthesize the needed amino acid from another one that you did eat.
Your body's brilliant, isn't it?

So do you need it every day?
People wonder if it's necessary to eat protein every day and the answer to that question is YES.
The reason is simple.
Your body does not store amino acids for the most part -- just a small number of them are stored in your liver for 3-5 days tops.
So if you go several days without protein, your liver won't have the ingredients it needs to construct the protein that you need.
Now, your body's smart and does whatever it can do to get you those needed amino acids...
And that means breaking DOWN your own muscles if necessary!
So clearly it's in your best healthy interest to get some form of protein every day.

Get it AND use it
Getting the amino acids you need is only half the formula.
You also need to make sure they're being broken down properly--and that depends on how good your digestion is.
You see, if proteins aren't broken down properly, 2 things can happen:
1- Proteins that aren't broken down as completely as they should be can get absorbed into your bloodstream. When this happens, your immune system goes on alert because it sees those poorly digested proteins as dangerous invaders.
If this happens over and over, eventually your immune system can launch an all-out attack. And voila' -- you've just created a food allergy or sensitivity.
2- Your liver doesn't have the amino acids it needs for its protein recipe...and your health can suffer in countless ways as a result.

So to ensure that your body gets the amino acids you need AND use them, it's crucial to have a diet that is easy to digest and features a variety of protein sources.
And that is where the Great Taste No Pain system can be a tremendous help.
Great Taste No Pain not only encourages you to enjoy several delicious sources of protein (including meats, fish, beans, legumes, nuts and whole grains), but it also teaches you the right other foods to eat them with so you have comfortable, thorough digestion...
And can actually USE those precious amino acids!
If you've got a gluten challenge, no worries. Great Taste No Gluten is for you instead.
Check your enzyme action
Now, there's also an enzyme concern too.
You see, if you've had a modern diet for a while and/or have taken antacids for as long as you can remember, chances are excellent you may have diminished your body's enzyme making ability.
And without the adequate enzymes, you have a better chance of scoring a date with George Clooney or Jennifer Aniston than having complete digestion.
Eating fresh fruits and vegetables can help because they have their own enzymes built right in and can help your cause. But for some people with serious enzyme shortages, that may not be enough.

That's when an enzyme supplement like Digestizol Max can be just what you need.

Digestizol Max's blend of 14 plant-derived enzymes and 5 soothing herbs will give your body a welcome boost and help ensure that everything you've eaten is broken down like it should be.

PPS: Melanie taught her gastroenterologist a thing or two!
Dear Sherry,
I just wanted to write a note to say "Thank you so very much."
I have diverticulosis, gastritis, and IC. In the past, I suffered so much with these conditions. I want everyone to know how well your Great Taste ~ No Pain eating plan is.
Just this past week, I was scheduled to see my gastroenterologist. I was going to cancel. I really felt that well from both the eating plan and Super Shield probiotics. I have been taking them for over a year and have also been using Digestizol Max.
I am a huge fan of all of your products.
I went to the appointment anyway, but only to tell them about you and your products. It is an hour & 1/2 drive to the office...each way! But I felt it was SO important to attempt to let others know how much you & your products have helped me.
Guess what? Just so you know--the doctor took notes! And kept asking questions!
I am really hoping that she passes the information on to others who are suffering.
Thank you also for your daily newsletters. They really reinforce "good behavior" in nutrition.
Best Wishes Always...
Melanie
