Thank you William

Subject: Detroit's Bankruptcy
Well, Detroit is bankrupt. It appears they have been bankrupt for
sometime, they just wouldn't say the word.
All sorts of reasons for this are being put forward, corrupt politicians,
a long string of Democrat mayors, public and private labor unions and finally
auto manufacturing leaving town in
search of lower wages and a more responsible work
force. In this short
essay I'm going to take a look at these reasons from my
perspective.
Automobile manufacturing was the life blood of Detroit so
I must start there. The Fifties were the
heyday of the automobile. The labor
unions recognized this and demanded higher wages. It's the role of management to consider the long and short term effects
of any pay increase. They thought it
would never end and agreed with little push back to what has proved to be
unreasonable wage and benefit demands.
They forgot some of the basic laws of the free market, there's always
someone, somewhere working on a cheaper better product, and capital can easily
be moved. And that's what happened.
Caterpillar almost went bankrupt when the Japanese Co.
Komatsu came on the
scene. Management knew they had to do something. In 1994-95 Caterpillar
dealt with a 17 month long strike, with the UAW members
finally returning to work with out a contract despite record profits for
Cat. Management pushed back and did what
needed to be done to save the company and in long run thousands of UAW jobs. A lot
of white shirts got dirty in the process.
The rise of the public sector unions in the seventies
gave birth to what is almost a Perpetual Motion Machine; in other words a
alliance between public sector unions and politicians, you keep electing me and
I will see that your
wages and benefits continue to increase. The tax payer was treated like a
frog in a pot of water.
The water kept getting hotter as the politicians continued to raise
taxes to provide more benefits and higher wages to the unions. Finally the water got so hot those that could
left Detroit, further eroding the city's tax base.
Detroit has had a long record of Democrat mayors and as I
see it, a basic tenet of the Democrat politician is, "you, Mr. voter, are
not getting a fair shake, elect me and I will protect you from that greedy rich
man."
Protection is never free and the rich man, the job and
capital provider, just calls the moving van.
Regarding corrupt politicians, they usually elected by a
corrupt electorate.
When I say corrupt electorate I don't mean voters who
take money under the table. I'm using
"corrupt" here to describe citizens who, when they do vote, do little
to independently determine the true facts about a candidate.
They are often satisfied if the candidate's skin color
matches theirs. They forget everyone and
I do mean everyone has an agenda and the candidate's agenda always sounds
good. We have all heard it but continue
to deny the truth contained in the phrase " if sounds too good to be true
it probably is. The only thing free in
this life is God's saving Grace, everything else comes with a cost.
Finally, are the gods giving us a preview of America's
future? I think so.

If you voted for President Obama this time or lastI hope
you tell your children that you took out loans in THEIR NAME so that YOU didn't
have to face the music and could continue to live your happy carefree life.
