College football
team ordered to remove crosses from helmets
Friday, September 12, 2014
What happens when you cross
ignorance of law, bad legal advice and a college president without a
backbone?
At Arkansas State University, you
get an unconstitutional violation of religious rights.
According to Todd Starnes at FoxNews, the ASU football team was told
to remove a memorial decal from their helmets after Jonesboro attorney Louis
Nisenbaum complained because part of the memorial included a cross.
The cross decal was meant to
memorialize former player Markel Owens and former equipment manager Barry
Weyer, said athletic director Terry Mohajir. Weyer was killed in a June car
crash. Owens was gunned down in Tennessee in January.
“It is my opinion that the crosses
must be removed from the helmets,” university counsel Lucinda McDaniel
wrote to Mohajir. “While we could argue that the cross with the initials of
the fallen student and trainer merely memorialize their passing, the symbol
we have authorized to convey that message is a Christian cross.”
But according to Article 6(d)(1) of
the official rulebook of the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA), “Persons or events may be memorialized by an insignia
not greater than 1-1/2 inches in diameter on the uniform or helmet.”
This clearly indicates the school
is practicing unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination against the
football players.
Help set the record
straight… TAKE ACTION!
Send your email to ASU
President Charles Welch, urging him to reverse
a decision based on poor legal advice and protect the rights of football
players to place the memorial sticker, with the cross, on their helmets.
You may also send an email directly
to the Director of Athletics Terry Mohajir and University Counsel Lucinda
McDaniel.
