·        Because there are no pain receptors in the GI tract, patients would not feel any pain from the internal injection

Researchers have unveiled a new pill that could replace injections.
It can deliver drugs that cannot currently be delivered as a pill.
However, there is one caveat -  the pill is covered in tiny needles.

HOW IT WORKS

The microneedle pill is coated with hollow needles.
When the pill reaches the desired location in the digestive tract, the pH-sensitive coating surrounding the capsule dissolves, allowing the drug to be released.
Their prototype acrylic capsule, 2 centimeters long and 1 centimeter in diameter, includes a reservoir for the drug and is coated with hollow, stainless steel needles about 5 millimeters long.
Because there are no pain receptors in the GI tract, patients would not feel any pain from the drug injection.
Researchers at MIT and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) have devised a novel drug capsule coated with tiny needles that can inject drugs directly into the lining of the stomach after the capsule is swallowed.
In animal studies, the team found that the capsule delivered insulin more efficiently than injection under the skin, and there were no harmful side effects as the capsule passed through the digestive system.
'This could be a way that the patient can circumvent the need to have an infusion or subcutaneous administration of a drug,' says Giovanni Traverso, who led the research, which appears in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Although the researchers tested their capsule with insulin, they anticipate that it would be most useful for delivering biopharmaceuticals such as antibodies, which are used to treat cancer and autoimmune disorders like arthritis and Crohn's disease.

This class of drugs, known as 'biologics,' also includes vaccines, recombinant DNA, and RNA.
'The large size of these biologic drugs makes them nonabsorbable. And before they even would be absorbed, they're degraded in your GI tract by acids and enzymes that just eat up the molecules and make them inactive,' says Carl Schoellhammer, a graduate student in chemical engineering and a lead author of the paper.
Scientists have tried designing microparticles and nanoparticles that can deliver drugs, but such particles are expensive to produce and require a new version to be engineered for each drug.
When the pill has reached the desired location in the GI tract, the coating dissolves, revealing the microneedles. In the case of hollow microneedles (top right), the drug reservoir is compressed through peristalsis, releasing the drug through the needles. In the case of solid microneedles (bottom right), the drug is formulated into the microneedles. The microneedles lodge in the tissue where they can slowly dissolve and release their payload.

Previous studies of accidental ingestion of sharp objects in human patients have suggested that it could be safe to swallow a capsule coated with short needles.
Because there are no pain receptors in the GI tract, patients would not feel any pain from the drug injection.
To test whether this type of capsule could allow safe and effective drug delivery, the researchers tested it in pigs, with insulin as the drug payload.
It took more than a week for the capsules to move through the entire digestive tract, and the researchers found no traces of tissue damage, supporting the potential safety of this novel approach.
This approach could also be used to administer vaccines that normally have to be injected, the researchers say.
The team now plans to modify the capsule so that peristalsis, or contractions of the digestive tract, would slowly squeeze the drug out of the capsule as it travels through the tract.

They are also working on capsules with needles made of degradable polymers and sugar that would break off and become embedded in the gut lining, where they would slowly disintegrate and release the drug.

In the continuous battle of the mega yachts to be the most extravagant vessel on the seas, it takes a lot to really impress.
While helipads, waterslides, and movie theatres are commonplace additions to the yachts of the super wealthy, a stylish Italian is making waves for being the first to feature a floating drive-in garage.
J'ade, by Ferretti group company CRN, features a hydraulic-operated hatch which can store an eight-metre speedboat without the use of a tender lift.

The internal basin, which holds 18,000 litres of water, floods and empties in just three minutes, enabling the boat (a 27ft Riva Iseo) to enter the yacht without using a crane.
When the speedboat is not stored inside, the basin can also be utilised as an indoor ocean pool, accessible from the lower-deck terrace.

Completed last year, the 60-metre yacht was the star attraction at last week's Monaco Yacht Show, where it was a finalist for the Best Interior award. The brand-new Perini Navi motor yacht Grace E was awarded the prize.
J'ade made it's debut at the annual yacht show last year, and also won the World Yacht Trophy at the 2013 International Boat Show.

The privately-owned yacht was created by Studio Zuccon International Project, and is designed to feel 'at one with the sea'.
The 196-foot vessel can comfortable accommodate 10 guests in four cabins and the owner suite, and 13 crew members. Aside from the impressive 'garage', J'ade also features a gymnasium, hammam room and aquarium.
Across the four decks, materials for the interiors are Canaletto walnut and polished rosewood. The hardwood floors are made of wide Afromosia strips and the cabins and owner suite are fitted with white Tai Ping carpets. There are jade green accents throughout the interior.

‘CRN is experimenting,’ Luca Boldrini, CRN’s sales director told Boat International.
‘We’re experimenting in design, in sizes, and in features. Each of the yachts in build has special features in development, and we hope the next step will be to mix and match all these new features in one or two new concepts so future owners can not only have a beautiful, seaworthy and safe vessel, but they can have special features that nobody else has.
'These will not be special features that are just an experiment, but features clients can touch and feel in other vessels under construction or already floating.’

These jaw-dropping images show the moment a humpback whale leapt majestically from the ocean, 'waving' to a tourist boat before crashing back down with an almighty splash.
The photos, taken off the coast of South Africa by marine tour guide Steven Benjamin, captured a sight rarely seen at such close proximity.
The 40 ton humpback put on an incredible aerial display, soaring through the air just yards from a boat as shocked onlookers screamed.

The 31-year-old, who was documenting the migration of more than 1,000 whales from the coast of South Africa to the warmer waters of Mozambique and Madagascar, watched as the whale flopped around in the ocean.
Mr Benjamin thought the humpback's show was over after 20 minutes hiding deep under water, but it suddenly lifted ts entire body out of the water, extending a fin to onlookers before slamming back down, creating a huge splash.
The giant creature was clearly having a whale of a time as the marine tour guide watched from the safety of a boat off Port St John, in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.

The spectacular display of strength and agility 'blew away' Mr Benjamin, who had never before managed to get so close to a humpback.
Mr Benjamin said: 'Huge whale breaches like this are common to see quickly from a distance, but it is exceptionally rare to have it occur close to the boat and have the camera ready.
'I got this shot out of sheer luck. We were focused on this whale whilst it was doing normal tail slapping and half head flops.
'It took a rest for 20 mins and then without notice or warning, it did a single massive breach.'

He added: 'I was stunned. I've never seen such a huge, front on and high breach like that. The whole boat erupted in screams as it landed.'
Mr Benjamin, from Cape Town, only started taking pictures of marine life six years ago.
The amateur snapper won his camera in a local photography competition, allowing him to capture bigger and better shots.
He added: 'People can't believe its a real image, everyone always looks twice and are blown away by it.'
The acrobatic animals can grow up to 50ft long, and have a reputation for throwing themselves out of the water despite weighing up to 40 tons.
Humpback whales were almost hunted to extinction during the 1960s, but a ban has allowed their global population to reach approximately 80,000.
