Health
conscious people today are certainly concerned with the condition of
their major organs...
After
all, you wouldn't get too far if your heart gave out suddenly. Your body
couldn't function without your brain. If your liver shut down? Well, so
would you. Pretty quickly. Without your lungs working, breathing wouldn't
be in your future. Neither would living.
But
there's one organ that most people don't think of as an organ at all...
Funny,
because it's your largest organ, comprises about 7% of your total body
weight and is also your protective barrier from all kinds of dangers around
you...
It's
your skin.
And
when you understand ALL that it does for you, you realize how vital it is
to take care of your humble integumentary system.
So
let's take a quick look at...
The
"skinny" on your skin
Believe
it or not, you shed millions of skin cells each day through washing and
abrasion (rubbing). Much of the "dust" on your furniture and in
your house is actually dead skin cells!
These
cells are born in the second layer of your skin (called the dermis) and
work their way up to the surface (your epidermis) by which time they're
dead.
As
you shed the dead cells, new ones appear right away to take their place. As
a matter of fact, you "grow" a new epidermis every 5-7 weeks.
Besides
keeping your innards all "packaged up," your skin has several
important jobs to do.
First
and foremost, it's your waterproof "shield" to harmful substances
around you. It doesn't let much get in.
The
biggest exception to that are substances like toxic heavy metals --
especially lead and mercury. They can penetrate the skin and get into your
bloodstream, so don't touch them under ANY circumstances.
Exterior door and SO
much more
In
addition to being your body's "exterior door" your skin also
serves these impressive functions:
1- Chemical reaction
Your
skin has more than 2 million sweat glands! And there's a very good reason
for this.
Secretions
like sweat and oil make your skin's surface slightly acidic. This keeps any
bacteria that might be on your skin surface from multiplying too fast and
posing a danger.
And
melanin (your skin's pigment) forms a strong shield against UV radiation.
2- Macrophages attack invaders
Although
the majority of your immune system is in your gut, immune cells called
macrophages live in the epidermis--the outer layer of your skin.
Macrophages
quietly wait in your skin for a "call to action." If bacteria or
viruses enter your skin through a cut or tear, the macrophages launch an
attack, engulfing and destroying the invader.
3- Turn up the heat--or cool
it down
Your
skin also has a sophisticated system to control your body temperature.
To
cool you down, it releases sweat. That's why it's so important to sweat
when you exercise--to prevent getting overheated.
So
if you're one of those people who "hates to sweat" when you
exercise, get over that right now. It's your body taking care of itself.
In
cold temperatures, the blood vessels in your skin constrict to retain more
heat inside and keep you warm.
4- Danger, Will Robinson!
Because
it contains nerves, your skin responds to stimuli like tickles, bumps,
pressure, pain and temperature.
This
information races to your brain, which immediately figures out if it's
dangerous or not and how to respond.
If
a tickle comes from an ant crawling on your arm, you simply brush it off.
But if you touch a hot pan, well, you yank your hand away at the speed of
light.
5- The sunshine vitamin
Your
skin is also part of your body's team for the manufacturing of Vitamin D.
Sunlight
penetrates your epidermis and causes changes in some of your body's
cholesterol, which eventually is formed into Vitamin D.
That's
why cholesterol is not actually the "demon" that people make it
out to be. You NEED it to make Vitamin D, and your body needs Vitamin D to
absorb calcium and keep your bones healthy.
6- Another organ of detox
Although
your liver is your main organ of detox, your skin is no slouch either.
It
excretes certain kinds of nitrogen-containing waste products like ammonia
and urea.
It
also helps detoxify some heavy metals from your body by attaching them to
sulfur atoms and sticking them onto your hair shafts.
7- Cancer & wrinkle
protection
Your
skin produces various types of enzymes, some of which destroy
cancer-causing chemicals before they can harm your cells.
Others
help get rid of old collagen (proteins in your dermis which keep the skin
strong and smooth), so that new collagen can grow. When these enzymes are
healthy and working properly, you are less likely to develop wrinkles!
Now
that you have a better idea of ALL that your skin does for you, doesn't it
make sense to do what you can to help keep it healthy?
The
good news is, that's easily done.
Here
are five "Skin Saving Strategies" to help keep your "outer
layer" strong, healthy and even more youthful:
1) Get your
antioxidants
Make
sure you take in sources of antioxidants including Vitamins A, C and E, as
well as minerals like selenium and zinc.
Not
only do these key nutrients help prevent free-radical damage to your skin
cells, but they're also essential for wound repair and healing.
Having
a healthy diet and eating a variety of different colored fruits and
vegetables will help provide the skin-loving nutrients you need (more on
that below).
And
if you're noticing little lines and wrinkles already on your face, Vitamin
C cream can help.
Studies
suggest that Vitamin C applied externally to the skin may help
stimulate the growth of new collagen.
And
applying Vitamin C cream to your face can help plump up wrinkles, restore
skin tone and fill in small lines, giving you a more youthful, radiant
appearance.
Look
for creams that contain a 10% concentration of Vitamin C. I use Avalon
Organics, but there are many great ones out there.
2) Remember the
Omega-3s
You
need good levels of Omega-3 essential fatty acids to maintain healthy cell
membranes and reduce the production of inflammation-causing chemical that
can irritate skin tissues (and age you).
Unfortunately,
our typical diets are grossly lacking in Omega-3 EFAs. While they're
abundant in many fish, most people don't eat fish 7 days a week...so most
of us are low in Omega-3 EFAs.
That's
why an Omega 3 formulas like VitalMega-3
are vital for so many people.
VitalMega-3
gives your skin a healthy daily dose of the EPA and DHA that are highly
recommended by most experts.
Not
only will it benefit your skin, but studies show Omega-3 EFAs are also
helpful against excess cholesterol, joint aches and pains, brain health and
even high blood pressure!
3) Drink water
Your
body needs water from head to toe, and that especially includes your skin.
Water
provides natural moisture and carries needed nutrients to your skin, and it
sweeps away waste products, both of which in turn help keep your skin
smooth and clear.
There
are a variety of factors that affect how much water the average person
needs (including exercise level and the amount of natural water you get
from your foods), but a good place to start is to drink at least 5-8
glasses a day.
An
easy way to tell if you're drinking enough water is to look in the toilet
bowl. Your urine should be relatively clear and very light yellow. If it's
more opaque and dark yellow (at any time other than first thing in the
morning), chances are excellent you need more water.
4) Getcher fiber
We
all know fiber is good for keeping things, er, "regular" down
there. But it also helps your skin.
You
see, fiber binds with toxins in your bowel and eliminates them from your
body. If these toxins don't get eliminated and instead enter your
bloodstream, they can penetrate skin cells and cause irritation, rashes,
itching and more.
Getting
all the fiber you need is easy...see the all-important step 5 below:
5) Eat for alkalinity
ALL
of your organs, bones and tissues work ideally in an alkaline
environment--in other words, when you have a slightly alkaline pH.
And
that includes your biggest organ--your skin.
Like
the rest of your body, your skin MUST get the nutrients and antioxidants it
needs (like I mentioned above) to look and stay healthy.
If
you exist on mainly processed food, fast food, soda or meal combinations
that create an acid pH in your system, trust me, you can practically count
on a lousy complexion, poor skin tone, skin problems and looking older than
your years.
Plus,
a poor diet typically lacks needed fiber and impairs nutrient
absorption--which will further rob your skin of what it needs and will open
the door for skin-harming toxins to be absorbed.
To
have great skin (and health in all your other organs too), you HAVE to eat
the foods that give your body the nutrients and fiber it needs and keep
acid wastes low.
Vegetables.
Fruits. Lean meats and fish. Water. Nuts and healthy oils. Whole grains.
All in combinations that are easy for your body to digest.
And
that is what you will learn to do when you use the Great Taste No Pain system.
The
GTNP manual "How
To End Stomach Pain Forever, Even If Your MD Says, 'No Way!'"

diet--you will be shocked to see all the ways your diet choices affect your
health (including your skin).

better plus a whole lot more!
Sherry,
I found your website while
searching for information for a friend whose son has colitis. I suffered
greatly with ulcerative colitis myself from the time I was diagnosed at age
16 till I was 35.
Miraculously my problems went
away--doctors could not explain it and I didn't really change my eating
habits at that time, one doctor said I "grew" out of it.
Considering how sick I'd been over the years, I really didn't question it.
I was just thrilled to no longer be plagued with such a debilitating
problem.
I'm now 59 and thought I was
eating healthy until I starting reading the info I found on your site. It
intrigued me so much that I had to follow your plan immediately.
I'm so amazed at your research
and findings, how simple, sound and perfectly logical your advise is. And
most importantly, I wonder WHY this information has not been made available
to the masses as it's life changing!
Didn't take long to figure
that one out--it's the almighty dollar. Drug companies would go broke if
the masses combined foods correctly and no longer needed the trillions of
dollars worth of drugs they produce to "cure" the complications
of eating incorrectly! Sad, isn't it?
I'm SO thankful I found your
website and now follow your plan. What a difference it's made in how I feel!
I sleep better, have more
energy, my skin looks better, my hair is silky, AND as care taker for my 87
yr old Mom, she too is reaping the benefits of "Great Taste No Pain".
Thanks Sherry, you ARE a life
saver in the true sense of the word!
Jeane
