4-year-old Michigan girl mauled to death

Michigan girl mauled to death by dog was trying to give it treat just moments after adoption

A 4-year-old Michigan girl mauled to death by her brand new dog was trying to give the pup a treat when it pounced on her, neighbors said.

The dog attacked little Kiyana McNeal just moments after its previous owner brought it to her family's St. Joseph County home Sunday.

The girl's mom, who tried to protect her daughter from the Doberman mix, suffered head and hand injuries in the attack.

Kiyana tried to train her newly adopted pet with a treat just after the unidentified man brought it to her family.

"The dog come and sniffed it, and then stepped back. Then come, sniffed it again," neighbor Becky Davis told WOOD-TV. "And evidently the third time he got her."

Kiyana McNeal, 4, was killed by a Doberman dog when she tried to feed it a treat after the family adopted it.

Her mom and the dog's old owner desperately tried to revive Kiyana while they waited for an ambulance.

"They had the baby on the ground doing CPR. It didn't do any good," Davis said.

It's not clear how Kiyana's mom found the dog for the family. Its original owner insisted it had never been violent before.

Kiyana's dad, Gerald Johnson, said his daughter loved animals and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian.

"That's my little baby girl," the Detroit man said. "My baby girl will always be loved and we're going to treasure all the videos and the pictures that we have of her."

The dog was taken by animal control. The attack, which happened about 125 miles west of Detroit, is under investigation.
