Anti-gun groups are angry that the NRA is offering free training to National Guardsmen
by Sam Rolley
Gun control groups are upset that the National Rifle Association is offering Indiana National Guardsmen free firearm safety training after the state’s Republican governor permitted guardsmen to concealed carry at military bases and training centers in the interest of increased security.
In response to the recent attack on a military recruiting office in Tennessee, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence directed his state’s military bases and training centers to beef up security.
Part of his order included providing guardsmen in the state with NRA’s world-class firearms training, which has honed the skills of more than 65,000 U.S. law enforcement officers.
The gun advocacy organization even announced it would conduct the training at no charge.
But according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the Indiana National Guard should have declined the free training because the NRA is “first and foremost” a “lobbying organization.”
Instead, the anti-firearm organization says the U.S. military should conduct the concealed carry training.
“There is no institution better equipped to train our servicemen and women than the US military itself,”
Brady president Dan Gross told the Associated Press. “This is not a job for lobbyists.”
The NRA responded to the criticism, suggesting that Brady should spend more time researching the organization before demonizing its mission.
“If anyone has done their research or knows a little bit about the NRA, they would know that we were founded on the principles of marksmanship, and have continued till this day to teach firearm competency and safety to civilians through a network of over 120,000 certified instructors,” said a post on the NRA’s website.
“No other organization in the world does more than the NRA to educate people on the safe and responsible use of firearms.”
The NRA was started in 1871 by Union Civil War veterans Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate.
Dismayed at the bad shooting skills of the men with whom they had served, they wanted to “promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis.”
The organization spent the early part of its existence focused on shooting safety, hunter education, and law enforcement and military training.
And while the NRA has become an increasingly vocal lobbying group since setting up its legislative action network in the 1970s, for more than 140 years it has been training civilians, peace officers and, yes, National Guardsmen in the finer points of marksmanship.
THANK YOU NRA!!!
