Peptides imitate morphine
There are certain protein fragments called peptides that are found in gluten that look and act just like the drug morphine.
These peptides are hidden and inactive when they're in, say, a piece of bread. But they're released and become active once you eat the bread through the digestive process in your stomach and by secretions from your pancreas.
Once they're free, these peptides are VERY resistant to digestive enzymes. Instead of being broken down and "swept away" with your bowel movements, they do their best to seep out through your intestines, get into your bloodstream and make their way to your brain.
That is where they have their opiate effect...
The typical feeling is a physical, almost sensual sense of comfort. This is why foods like bread and pasta are commonly called "comfort foods"--they literally do make you feel good and comfy.
But alas, Luke, they too have a "dark side."
How gluten "opiates" can increase cancer risk
Your immune system has a cancer defense "police force" in what are called "natural killer cells." These cells are constantly on patrol, seeking out and destroying damaged cells that may turn into cancer.
So clearly a strong functioning immune system is one of the keys to cancer prevention.
But opiates have been shown to interfere with the cancer-fighting action of natural killer cells in two ways:
1- They seem to disarm the natural killer cells--acting directly on their receptors and destroying their protective ability against cancer.
In one study this process was shown to happen within just 30 minutes of exposing blood from celiac patients to proteins from gluten!
2- They act indirectly by interfering with the part of your brain that controls the activity of natural killer cells.
In other words, the police station can't direct the cops to find the bad guys like they should.
